  1. Hoya Saxa = What (Gr. N plural) Rocks (Ltn. N plural) also my alma mater's sports nomiker

In any event, the Tonka is ready to rock:

Tyres are Super Swamper Q78/16 roughly 35.5"x9.5" R16. Looks like there will be about 2 feet under the diff. Crawl ratio with Suff B T-box and 5.99 axles is now 64:1 not exactly rocktabulous but a good sight better than the previous 41:1

    more to come... :D

  2. Mr Cordell,

The stuff you put together in the archive on the 300 TDI was great (I added the diagram from TST that had gone missing). Have you got anything or know where there is anything on the 200 TDI - I believe the injector pump is different? If the same pump, same process for de-restricting should apply, no? Any and all help welcome.

  3. I've only ever used RM springs and I have beat the living hell out of them in the desert, wadi bashing, the jungle, and running rock here. I have run 2 leafers all around and then changed over to rear three leafers when I put the station wagon top on. I broke the bolt that holds the leaves together and locates the springs on the spring pad once after some pretty heavy duty abuse up in the Mussandam in Oman (very weird involuntary rear steer feeling). I have to say that this bolt is not what it should be and at the time I replaced them all with stronger ones, and did so as soon as I got the new three leafers. Take a look at these bolts and you will see what I mean. I recently replaced the front springs as they were fairly warn out after three years of hard use and were sagging a bit. They could have been re-arched but I went for new. I haven't used TIC, British Springs or any other, but I have been happy with RM and Ray Wood was always very helpful.

Hope the RM's do the trick for you.

  4. As I do not understand the current politics of the fora, I am double posting - one here and one on the forum formerly known as LRE and currently without name. My query has nothing to do with current or fomer owners, current or former moderators, any magazine, or the price of tea in china.....

My 1978 88" was built for export to the Middle East and is not equiped with a heater or even the side air intake for one. What's the best/cheapest route to get some form of heater in there for this winter? I've seen Eberspacher's but they are far too expensive, and the 12v electric ones that I have seen are dubious yto say the least. Need your help.

  5. The three speed auto on the RR was a Torque Flight 727, using a International Harvester/Scout bellhousing with an adapter ring to the Rover V8. Many Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge cars used the 727 in direct drive to the rear wheels. The tailshaft assembly should be capable of adaptation for this purpose as that's how it was mated to the LT230 transfer box. The TF727 is an extremely robust transmission and served behind the original Hemi and early Cummins Tubo Diesel engines in Dodge trucks.

  6. Well, now that Green has 'screwed the pooch' as they say, so delicately, over here, I can have my say on LRE. I have from time to time in the past written articles for LRE (and for LRM - not sure if I ever did anything for LRO) for example on the Team Saluki boys when I was living in Dubai. The first was a vanity piece on the Tonka, so I was happy with publication and a free subscription (well, not really 'happy' per se) after that I wrote some pieces on Team Saluki and since they were effectively good PR for the team, didn't want remuneration. I then wrote a couple of pieces when I was in Malaysia, for which I incurred some costs for pictures, photo enhancement, mailing etc., and for which I asked the "going rate" for a freelancer. I was told this was 100 quid a page by James Taylor and while I was sure this was under rate, said fine. To this day, I have not been paid for the Malaysian pieces I did, the third of which I held publication on after numerous stories down the phone about the "check is in the mail".

It's a small thing, but it shows the petty-minded fleecing mentality of the outfit. So, glad we're here and f*** 'em at LRE.

  7. Is there much that can be done to the tdi's in terms of power boost ? My diesel knowledge is confined to the Cummins 5.9 but as I understand it, most diesel engines will take more fuel and air for a good jump in torque and power without getting into danger too quickly. More fuel with pump and injector upgrades and more air with a bigger turbo, or more bost if it will take it and a bigger intercooler if you can fit it are the general routes but I don't recal seeing much in the way of ads in the landy mags for anything but chips on the TD5.

I am seriously considering a 300 tdi/R380/Series t-box combo but I have to say I haven't been overly impressed by the tdi's I have driven. They're torquey, but not so much more powerful than my 2.25 in my view. I'm sure that will put the fox among the hens but that has been my experience and thus I am wondering about ways to pump it up a bit.

  8. I think you will have to start with the UK I'm afraid. Sales will be restricted by specifications requirements and it is a reasonable guess that Sales to the Falklands would fall under the UK, given the islands dependent status. It may not make sense in many ways, but these sorts of things generally get decided by the Law Dept and their thinking will be legal status of the territory/jurisdiction. Alternatively, if there are no clear vehicle specifications issues, you should look at the easiest place to get them shipped from which would probably be amongst your Spanish speaking mainland bretheren - also cheaper if available. Other sensitivities and issues apply there however....

  9. Al,

I'm sure the pyramids were built more rapidly and with greater assurance of the final outcome.

It has been plagued with setbacks, mishaps, and misadventures, interrupted only by long periods of inactivity. But other than that, just great. I reckon it's still weeks out. One interesting development has been the decision to ditch the flexy Revolver shackles that give more droop and lateral spring flex. With the Q78/16s stuffing up into the wheel arch fairly quickly, it was never going to be very flexy. But with three locking diffs, it doesn't need to be :D I'm guessing - still not sure - at about 22" clearance under the diff. If I can ever work out the steering linkage I may have a truck and some pics....

  10. On a standard leaf spring and shackle pack, 750x16 / 31" is probably about the best you can do. After that it's a function of lift and trim. I had 32" Simex ET's on the Tonka with paras and Revolver shackles, a less agressive tread and you could probably get 33" in there. After that, unless you do something about half shafts and diffs, bigger is not better.

I will be running 36" TSL Super Swampers in the new set up, but that will be on Volvo portals, there will be some trimming and it will be a lot less flexy.

  11. If Mike P turns up, can someone let me know....

Colin - he was last spotted via the Middle East 4x4.com site allegedly posting from greater metropolitan Fallujah and said to be in the company of Rashid. It was not clear what they were both doing there, whose side they were on, or whether indeed their presence there was in anyway related to the current conflaguration..... ;)

  12. Okay - I just came over, although I haven't got a clue what's going on! Well, I have a clue but "in due course" we will get a full explanation, accusations, refutations, and some full on bitch-slapping details, right?

In the mean time, I can't seem to get the link or browse options in the avatar section to accept mine. Any clues/ideas/suggestions/etc?????

    Edited: NEVERMIND....
