[ird case]

i can get hold of some taps and suppose i can get a new larger plug to suit from somewhere...

if any one knows what size the original one is let me know as mine is completely buggered....so ive not gone anything to work from...

better still if anyone can tell me what size tap to use and replacement plug to get , well, that'd be great....(im not to hot with this kind of stuff..)

trouble is, if i go into a motor parts centre, id probably just have to ask for a sump plug for a ????mondeo/laguna/bmw x5 etc ..you know,a specific model car... rather then ask them for a specific thread size/pitch.........i have no idea where to start.......................................

hi guys...hope you can help...

i bought a freelander, 05 plate, 40k TD4... after a few weeks and a bit of reading up i suspected the viscous coupling was shot...

got it in at my mates garage, the plan was to change the vc and do a thorough service as well.......

it didnt quite go to plan........... doh!!!!!!

we removed the prop and vc unit but on closer inspection the bearings in the ird output seemed a bit poorly/ notchey ? the crown /pinion etc seems fine though..i think ive just caught it before the whole thing went bang.....

luckily my mate is a gearbox specialist so all that is in hand...he's gonna remove the ird, split it open and renew all the bearings and seals etc...

were im stuck is the oil filler plug on the ird..... when i wound out the plug it brought a load of swarf with it....it now has NO thread !!!

the car was previously serviced by Landrover and this must have been done by them !!.......they were last to touch it...

when we wound it out it came out quite stiff... all that was left of the thread was some bits of swarf !!

so, other then trying to find a replacement casing, does anyone have any other idea's ??

i think with the verniers the plug was aprox 22mm dia.... not sure weather i can get a larger one and tap the case etc or if theres some kind of heli coil kit etc..........

man im annoyed at the bag of carp i bought. but hopefully when all this is sorted i should have the car i thought i was buying..............

if any one can tell me exactly what size the plug is or point me in the right direction for a helicoil (never used one ?sorry) i be great full...

or if you have any other idea's.. maybe a larger plug and tap it out when its split for bearing rebuild..if so and you can recomend a specific larger plug from another vehicle id be VERY greatfull....
