  1. I'll modify an oak peg to make a bung.

I had severe memory loss after Sepsis during lockdown, resulting a a new heart valve - so I cant remember which has the faulty sensor

But - I previously had issues that were caused by the flimsy wiring loom that went up the gear stick, so I'm wondering whether to look at those too?

Triggered by your comment about there being nothing in them to fail - I'm wondering whether we are heading in the wrong direction

Has anyone got a wiring diagram?

Maybe a simple jig could be made to test the sensors - Somebody could chuck-up a (Blunt) Sawbalde in a lathe or mill or drill and introduce a sensor (carefully) to see if pulses are generated?

    I'll get my coat!

  2. Defender 110 2015 Utility XS

I filled my tank up, with 2/3rds V Power on top of a 1/3 of an existing tank of Tesco Diesel.  We went 70 miles to Bristol Dual carriageways and Motorways - When we got close the engine started to 'miss', loose power intermittently, jerk (not violently) - We were moving flats for my daughter and made multiple trips across the city - then headed home.  The problems only seemed to occur at low speeds, Not low revs. Once we were heading home Dual carriageways and Motorways, no issues.

When I went to fire her up the next day she is very reluctant, clattering unhappily. We kangarooed down our short track, then down the single track steep hill we live on in 3rd using momentum to her her running. At the bottom of the hill she cut out and I got the engine management light. I pulled into a passing space. the engine had stared running in a very rough fashion, slow and ragged. by now it was POURING white smoke out the exhaust - so much so you couldn't see across the lane - people were stopping to see if I was OK? after a while it revved-up and I carried-on. now it was in some sort of limp mode not revving above 2000 RPM, and pretty gutless (but after a mile no more smoke)   after a few miles I stopped on a steep down slope, turned her off - then re started - All good, still had the Bristol hesitation, but the power was back, and I could rev it as much as I wanted. I nursed it into town, and after an hour of 'Cardio Rehab' It was very reluctant to start - but got me home despite the 'Bristol hesitation'.

I enlist the help of a friend who is very good with all things Land-Rover, and he suggests a problem with the fuel, We replace the fuel filter (preloaded with redex pump and injector cleaner) and put a gallon of diesel in the now half full tank.  It reluctantly starts, runs badly, makes smoke (much less than before) LR Mechanic Friend turns off the engine management light. says he thinks I must have filled it with Petrol.  the residue in the tray from changing the fuel filter has what might be construed as a petrol small, I'm not convinced.

The main question is this - If i had put 50 litres of petrol on top of 30 litres of Diesel - would it have run?  - unless you can advise differently it does seem like a fuel contamination issue - but I'm not sure what.

It is pretty galling that having pushed out the boat and put V-Power in the tank - this is the result.

    Thanks

A variable pitch is too restrictive so they've progressed from there.  They now do elasticated rules so it can show whatever dimension is required.

Dont! - I worked for a company who's Foreman/Manager set out the dwarf wall for a newbuild Oak Barn using his dads linen tape  (that had been left out in the rain)  Guess what??

We had a big long chat about them in 2015 apparently. I dont think we found a resolution though...

We did have a long chat about it in 2015 - (probably triggered by me - I think of these GKN gatherings as the school reunions I never went to)

  5. Thanks for the info Gents.

I can remember looking through the RS Catalogue at the time (early 2004/5 maybe) and having the same problem with the thread and diameter, it would be a benefit for all the GKN owners if you had a tried and tested solution?

    Thanks

  6. I suppose its time to raise the hoary old GKN Overdrive issues.  This was precipitated by the return of my old 110 CSW 300 Tdi  M Reg having spent the last 11 years being trashed on my sisters little farm.  I had this from 1999 to 2010  put 100K on it with no real issues  did a lot of towing and the GKN was an absolute god send - you can select exactly the right gear for every situation - and being able to change on the fly was a real bonus.  Needless to say - the GKN no longer works, the speed sensor being the likly suspect.

So now I have 2 110s with GKNs that dont work siting outside.

I haven't approached Devon 4X4 since they sold out of sensors years ago, and wondering whether anybody on here had come up with a solution?

    Thanks

  7. Hi

I'm gearing up to buying another new tilt and I'm looking for information on a Durable Winter Cover for my 1956 86" Series One - We are quite exposed, and Canvas tilts quickly get trashed, as do the Tarps that go over the tilt.  I have learned that quality tarps are the way to go, but was wondering whether anyone knows of a decent Durable cover (which will be a good fit)

Also does anybody have views about breathable / non breathable covers?  pros and cons.

    Cheers

  8. Yes, we have a VDub T4 camper too (sadly neglected) - it will always start first time - as will the V8 until recenty  - This whole thing is a ball ache!

Tomorrow -I'll post a picture of my home made 12V battery pack (made with life expired PC UPS batteries - rejuvenated by the CTEK charger)

The VW T4, The series one, my daughters VW Fox, and the V8 have all had new batteries recently, all Numax I think!

  9. All these drained batteries are getting to me - Yesterday Daughter No 2 in Bristol drained VW, Sister and daughter No 1 - with a 110 300 Tdi CSW (Milton Keynes) - wont start, and wont be jump started, and me with my 65 Plate Puma Utility, and my 1989 V8 110 - both with serious battery drain issues.  The V8 110 I think is a DIY immobiliser fault.  A mechanic at the local main dealer says no fault codes with the Puma, but thinks that there may be a fault with the alternator that's flattening the battery.  My NOCO started the very dead Puma instantly, but the Help bod at NOCA says you cant use it to charge or trickle charge a flat car battery.

I leave the ambulance standing for months at a time and it has never failed to start... but then it has a battery cutoff switch so there's zero drain when it's stood.

Yup - there is a JCB Telehandler that Sits here for up to 6 months - and always starts!  Funny thing was that while I was typing away on here this afternoon, my other daughter and my sister were trying to start her 110 300 Tdi (3 hrs drive away)  it has a battery isolator, but it was left on!

In the meanwhile NOCO tech help have said I cant use a Jump starter to slow charge the battery - so I'm back to square one.

That is a tricky solution to solve other than just driving it more often! Driving it every couple of weeks should be enough to keep it topped up?

I have not heard about that and can't see why a small trickle would be doing any harm? My main aim with that really was to offset the small draw from the stereo memory.

if they leave it for 2 weeks the battery is flat (which doesn't seem right)  if I leave my 110 Puma for more than 3 days it wont start (I thought that was the stereo - but is plainly more than that!) and my 89 110 V8 drains its battery in 6 to 7 days - Its making me paranoid!

Constantly running the battery down to nothing is not going to be doing it much good. A dedicated trickle charger would be the right thing to do here. The Noco will just flatten itself over time too. If you don't have access to power to trickle charge then a solar trickle charger might be enough? I fitted one to a 300tdi Defender that attaches to the sun visor and it has certainly reduced the number of times that truck needs a jump start

I agree, and that is what I do with my Series One which is not near to any mains (and any extension lead would be constantly run over) My daughters car is in an underground car park with no powerpoints. no sun and no power.

As an aside Ive heard adverse comment about solar charging, but dont understand the technicalities?

    cheers

  13. Greetings Battery booster people -  I have another question that is puzzling me:

My daughter has a NOCO Boost Sport GB20 500 Amp for her VW Fox It works very well to the point where I bought my self a much bigger one for my Landrovers.  The problem is the VW doesn't get used much and the battery is always drained flat when she wants to use it.  (the battery was new last spring)  Is there a way that she can use the NOCO Boost GB20 to charge her car battery without actually having to start the car?  She is worried that the car battery might get damaged by possible excess charging.

    thanks

I too have Melville & Moon covers but in black, I cant recommend them enough, but having said that they are pricey (they were a Christmas present from my Land-Rover loving boss) The other downside was that they took about 9 months to arrive from south Africa

They look great, have worn well, are comfortable, and have faded a bit (over 4 years) not sure if they protect the seats, never taken one off.

they are a great snug fit.
