  1. Ok, thanks guys , job done.  First attempt was just filling the filter, bolt it on and try.  Didnt fire.  Tried steve b suggestion and away it went, I'll remeber this for the next filter change.  Just another quirk !!

Hand priming with the lever worked upto a few years ago.  Lever parks in the up position but I can't remember if it was the up or down stroke that actually pumped.

  2. 1991,  12j, N/A… Have been replacing fluids and filters.  Next is the fuel filter but remembering last time it was a pain as the lift pump lever didn’t work to prime the filter.  This time I’ve just tried the lift pump before changing filter, but no resistance from the lever, I’ve tried turning the crank  but no difference.  Lift pump works fine as, does the engine.  So, any tips/suggestions of how to prime the fuel filter after I replace the element?

  3. 1991 Defender 2.5NA.  The clutch judders when starting in 1st or 2nd.  There is a slight vibration/rattley noise from the clutch that stops when the clutch pedal is pressed.  I assume a new clutch plate and bearing.  I’m physically not able to do the work now so it will be going into an old Irish garage that’s repairs anything.  They are familiar with LR’s and have done work for me before.  While its stripped down is there anything else they should look at or replace ?  Cam belt will be replaced at the same time.

  4. Hmm,  orange lens cover has come away leaving the black plastic backing plate in place.  Moss and “jelly” growing inside !!  Orange cover is suffering UV deterioration with loads of cracks.  I’ll fit 2 new ones just need to sort a part number.  Thanks both for help.

  5. Mine needed adjusting after a few weeks.  Its been fine since, approx. a year of normal mileage and some off road.  It may be in the first weeks the ball/grease bedded down and then fine after the adjustment.  Possibly some else has had longer usage and could rate the unit.

Ironically was going for MOT on tuesday but the guy I use has had to isolate due to a family member with a temperature, so testing may be a little in the future as it expires in a couple of days!

Depending on how that works out may do a little advance.

Are MOT test stations still open?  In Ireland the equivalent testing is postponed due to the virus.

  7. Thanks Mutley for the run through/advice/hints, all taken on board and thread saved.  The hole is small so no danger in leaving a few months until the sun shines.  I’ll certainly go galvanised.  Dampers are only a couple of years old so I shouldn’t suffer your frustration and need to decimate the local mammals.. 🤣 🤣
