  1. Spookily enough I was looking at the same £15 Smith and Allan stuff on eBog today. With a 230 and a couple of axles to fill it seemed a reasonable price, conducive to very frequent changes which should outweigh/ cost the "quality" alternatives. So, if yours doesnt destroy itself after 50 miles, that's the route I'll take

haha, I'll try and remember to let you know how it goes! :)

  2. There are places like CarSpares etc, but they only had little 1 litre bottles of Comma oil in the grade i needed at 7 quid each. I could do with finding a big industry supplier... Gotta be loads kicking about in Birmingham...

Those smith & allan ebay ones are 15£ delivered. I thought that was quite reasonable! Well, compared to the cheapest i found on Opieoils which ended up at 50£ after delivery. And that was with the current weekend discount and member code (about 25%!).

  3. Transfer box should be fine with GL5 too.

Is it just Series Transfer boxes with 'yellow' metals then?

I've read that certain GL5 oils are fine but others are not, but they need to be rated to be compatible with GL4 stuff... difflocks evolution stuff is gl4/gl5 so its fine in either or, but its a touch expensive :), Millers do some GL4/5 stuff too but its more expensive than the specific graded stuff.

  4. Started today thinking ill spend 5 mins ordering some oil... few hours later i think i have finally decided on something. Got reading into the whole GL5/GL4 transfer brass issues which caused some confusion and a never ending spiral of web site links.

I have an 86 military defender 90. I'm assuming the diffs are original (rear one was white). It has had a 200tdi disco engine conversion by the previous owner. I'm unsure which vehicles gearbox it has (discos or defenders) but in any case its an LT77. Not sure if the transfer box is the defenders or discos, it seems to be lacking a serial number. The lack of solid info on the parts on the landy is my general concern about which type of oil I need. So, have I got this right:

EP80W90 GL-5 in Diffs. 1.3 L in each. No brass in defender diffs, so have read GL-5 is the way to go for these?

EP80W90 GL-4 in transfer box. 2.3 L. Some transfers might have brass parts, therefore GL4 is the choice here?

ATF / MTF94 in the LT77 gearbox. 2.7 L. All LT77s use same oil. Will probably treat it to some difflock evolution 1 stuff. Curious to see if it will make a difference to the smoothness of the change.

    TIA, Ian

  5. Mine has a county roof so i have windows in the back. also has the county trim attached to the top bit and roof. But front is standard military so nothing but bare metal.

Planning simple matting/carpet in the back to cover the arches and load space. As mentioned, might just slap some ply down then glue some carpet to it. Or perhaps try some of that EVA matting linked above to reduce vibration noise etc. Probably get a sheet of rubber for the main load area. The spare wheel is sitting in the back at the moment. Took it off the front (couldnt see a thing!) and i dont have a wheel carrier yet.

  6. No, haven't come across that stuff before. Thanks for the link!

Not sure what type of material it actually is though...? rigid, soft, foam, rubbery? Might order a sheet and see what turns up. 10mm is pretty chunky, might be of use on the doors before putting chequer plate over the top or something.

  7. I made a couple for my land rover 90 i'll have a look for some pictures, takes just a couple of hours to make from start t finnish once you have all the bits and bobs.

Found some pics :) little blury but you get the idea and i think it looks good also didthe rear door and floor andwheel arches. If this is what your lookign for reply back ad i'll give you the list of thing i used and how i did it. Also after the pics were taken i covered the screw heads wit a black cap and that just finnishes off the sides.

Hi, just curious about what material you used for your interior re trim. I have a military 90 so its sort of lacking any for of interior at all... I am tempted to coat the insides in sound deadening material (brown bread or similar) then ruberize it (maybe carpet the back etc) to provide a little more warmth and noise reduction.

  8. Ah, ok excellent, thanks for the info! I'll have a more detailed look at that tonight. Must have missed that when i glanced over it.

And yeah, just noticed on paddocks that there is a slave that goes to KA045958 and one that goes from, so there must be a difference I guess. Same on MM-4x4 too actually, except they give dates to 1992 and from 1992. The Disco was a 91 H, so suggesting its probably before KA045958 etc.

Looking and the technical guides on here (pretty awesome by the way) swapping the pair doesn't look like to big a job. Only thing i need to be careful about is when swapping the slave - not to push the rod out of place or something?? or i will have to split the engine/gearbox to fix. and I REALLY don't want to do that. Any tips before attempting?

    Thanks

  9. Ah... that may be an issue. While I have the original log book and even the keys to the sacrificed disco I'm not sure I have its VIN number! Is there a way of finding it?

Although as kamdiffs steve says, if there isn't a difference between a defender and disco slave... will it matter?

I seem to be making a bit of a mountain out of a molehill here! haha :)

  10. Morning,

Recently purchased a Defender and obviously recently had my first problem!

It's an 86 military 90 with a early disco 200tdi fitted. The problem was the bite point of the clutch was on the floor. Bit of googling later I find this forum and several fixes - There was virtually no fluid in master, what was left was black. After filling it started appearing on the mat. Sooo I assume the master is on the way out!

Now this is where im slightly confused and its probably something that really doesnt matter but i thought I would ask anyway:

The master is a defender part, right? There seems to be only one so shouldn't be hard to get the right one:

    http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/DEFENDER/Clutch/Clutch_Master_Cylinder_all_models_-_TRW_Lucas.html

My confusion is what the slave is... Is it a disco slave? Its on the drivers side of the engine bay and is attached to a little damper reservoir. From what I've read this means its a disco part. Is there a difference between defender and disco slaves? Is there much difference between any of the slaves? Does it matter if I'm going from a defender master to a disco slave? I've also read about people fitting a V8 slave to lighten the pedal, is there a v8 one for the disco?? I was gong to get this:

    http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/DISCOVERY_1/Clutch/Clutch_Slave_Cylinder_-_200TDI_and_V8_from_KA045959_-_Lockheed.html

Not sure what the “from KA045959” means, but seems to be the only one for a 200tdi... ?

hmm... quite a few questions there! haha... one more though, should I bother refit the damper or just bypass it completely?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Ian
