  1. Funny you should say that, that is just what I have done as both spring hangers needed replacing as well.

Last time I looked they were like hens teeth so had resigned myself to getting one with extensions separate hangers and maybe adding bits and pieces here and there.

Found a coupe of places today that have them.

Should be here before the weekend, so I will keep you posted on the quality when it turns up.

  2. I have been looking for one of these with extensions, to replace the very rusty one on the truck at the moment.

I have been quoted £111.00 +vat from Bearmach and £85.00+ VAT from Craddocks. Spring hangers from both are about the same.

I have heard some real horror stories about the varying quality of replacement rear crossmembers (not specifically about these suppliers) but wondered if anybody has had experience of this part form either supplier?

    Cheers

  3. I have had both and a soft top for me every time.

Usually my top comes of around early April and goes back on around the end of October but even then I have the back rolled up most of the winter.

As for security I bolted an ammo box fitted with a couple of padlocks through the clasps to the rear tub floor immediately behind the bulkhead for tools and a few spare bits and pieces. Used to have a long low one one mounted to the top of the front bumper as well for a while for other stuff, tow ropes, big hammer etc.

  4. I Need to get a chassis part for the lightweight.

Found what I am looking for (rear 1/4 chassis at £116.0) from a place called Buckley Brothers in Darwen, Lancashire.

Has anybody had any dealings with them or advise re quality of their chassis parts supplied?

    Any guidance much appreciated.

    Cheers

  5. Hi,

In my LR SIII lightweight, is it normal that I cannot use the 1st gear without stalling?

I have even put my foot down on the gas to compensate but without effect, well with effect,

    I stall the LR!

The gearbox seems to run fine, so it might just be me not being used to the ltwt yet.

Do other SIII have the same issues? This is annoying as it means that I now only have 3 usable

    gears.....

    K.

Have you taken the handbrake off?

  6. true-i would like it, just have to re jig my budget a bit, and wasnt sure what people recommended doing from a practical point of view!

From a practical and least cost point of view if budget is an issue just leave it as it is. Get the engine running properly and just drive and do other repairs, cosmetic stuff as and when you can be bothered.

They don't need any mods they are great fun just as they come mate!!

  7. The stick used to rattle on my S3. I was told by a farmer to slip a length of milking machine hose on the length of the stick.

It worked a treat, presumably the extra weight changed it's resonant frequency.

You slipped your Landrover a length  ?

  8. Hey, I'm having some problems with the electrics on a S111 lightweight - can anybody tell me what the function of the 'filter box' (mounted on top of the rocker cover) is and what it does. when I turn on the ignition the dash light is really dim, if I disconnect the supply to the box the dash light goes to normal brightness!! Essentially, nothing works properly - need help. I have replaced the 2 control boxes (behind the seats) and tried a different dynamo (90 amp)

The box is a voltage dropper from 24V to 12V for the ignition system.

  9. The lovely MOT man has been kind to me for the last three years in passing the lightweight. There is some serious rust in the rear crossmember and a small hole beteeen the rear spring supports on one side. He has always let it go but last time he said that he couldn't again and I must get it sorted before the mext MOT which is fair enough I guess as he has been good enough to let it go for the last three years.

I have never done any welding in my life so the question is this.

Is there anybody out there willing to lend me hand with this for some beer tokens?

I would obviously buy all the bits needed (rear quarter I suspect) remove what bits need removing or moving and replace it all. I just need soemone to actually help me cut off the old stuff line up and weld the new.

I don't have a garage and don't really think it is a starter to do it in the road outside my house although I can borrow a mates garage for a few of days if needs be but it has no power or light.

I am willing to drive the truck to wherever as long as it is not 'kin miles from me in Twickenham. Alternatively I could sort the garage and someone could come to me if preferred.

As I said beer tokens for the help and tea and grub for as long as the job takes.

    Ta muchly in advance.

  10. It was with the change over from 200-300Tdi that it all changed, yes, I know it had nowt to do with the mil kit as they still retianed the 19J, or Mk6B as we call it, but the production line muat have had changes made, such as the disc braked rear axles so they tinkered about with other stuff as well.. This coincided with the change from KF/KL Mil reg nos to KJ onwards - the KF&KL had the pick head, helve and shovel on the door or tailgate, KJs had them on the roof (pick head) and the rest on the door for hard-tops or all 3 on the tail gate for soft-tops.

Well, as far as my Dortmunder kronen adlled mind of the time can recall anyways........

TBH units sometimes moved kit about anyways if say a door or hard-top got trashed in an RTI or some such, so there are, as always, loads of permutaions and nothing of this sort is 'fixed' as its not something our inspectors get obsessive about - as long as the kit is secureed safely it could end up where ever the hell you wanted.......... Take a recent RTI on a 110 XD - it needed new wings so the lad marked up all the mounts for the pick head holder and stuff and drilled away - then fitted the wings and realised he'd put the thing on the wrong wing - its still there as there's nowt wrong with where it is...........

Most folk doing a restoration will put a level of effort into the details that is NEVER used while the truck is in service - we just dont have the time to say, paint it exactly to the AESP or mount the pick head holder to within 0.5mm of where it should be - we just slap the paint on or drill some holes in roughly the right place - lazy?, possibly, necessary? Totally!

    As well as sensible.

  11. http://www.lightweightlandroverclub.org/ has the proper lightweigth floor panels (which ARE different to standard).

Unfortunately 2a vent panels in good nick are like gold dust, even series III to be honest. I'd look at trying to get it repaired if you can, i know someone on Ebay(or was it on here?) was selling channel bent to the right shape for the lower edge of the panel, which makes things a LOT easier!

    Good luck!

I'D BE UP FOR SOME OF THAT CHANNEL IF YOUI REMEBER WHERE IT COMES FROM.

  12. Of course, but it is very similar on the LWT, mind you, I have removed all mine as I kept bumping various appendages on them - they bloody hurt!

Yep they will do the job but wasn't sure how "concourse" needed to be.

I have removed mine as well and have a normal tailgate fitted as I prfer the look of that when riding arouind normally with the tools not fitted. I don't leave 'em on as they abound to get nicked1

I have all the tools still fitted to the split tailgate so can pop that on in a few minutes when i want to.

  13. Think it is, often people think it is the smaller pick and shovel, but it is the proper 'pioneer' ones that strapped to the tailgate -the small ones just don't fit.

Wasn't refferring to the tools but the bracketry.

That isn't a lightweight split tailagate and not the bracketry for the split tailgate.

  14. Oooh! Have started on it, and it has made a surprising difference aswell as making the inside look somewhat respectable! I've been using a bit of dynamat to soundproof the bulkhead and transmission tunnel, fitted some nice big rubber floor matts, and plugged up all the holes with new grommets and boots.

Next job is to think about a sound system, but that'll have to wait til my bank account recovers I think

    Cheers,

    Chris

So if you can't ctaully make it quieter, just drown out the noise with music!!!
