Hi all, this week I've been mainly thinking about steering !! Disco '93 TDi200
I've got play in my steering box (steady there!!) and I'm wondering if there is any way I can adjust/shim it out.
I seem to remember that there is an adjustment screw on the 4-bolt steering box - anyone got any ideas/experience of this??
Cheers all

Hi all, I want to do a bit of work on my '93 TDi 200.
I've got a bit of play in one of the uj's at the top of the steering shaft. I just checked various sites and it appears that you can't buy a replacement top uj on it's own, only the bottom one is available separately.
As a new shaft inc both UJ's is about £50+vat (Paddocks), I'm trying to find cheaper alternatives. Does anyone know if it's possible to demount the top uj and replace it with a bottom one??

I have a friend with a <tdi 300 auto and her steering was getting heaving and a bit graunchy - when I checked the pas fluid level was low so we bought a bottle (1ltr I think) and put almosy ALL of it in the pas reservoir!!
There can't have been hardly any fluid in the system, no obvious leaks, a bit of misting on the pipes but nothing horrendous. Was serviced by professionals (the robbers) 6 weeks ago!!
After that I checked the air filter and guess what, it (the filter) now resides in an auto musiam, the thing was prehistoric !!!
Professional eh, we know best - like hell you do.

Hi IainDB, I have just done this front axle refurb job on my Disco Tdi200 and my advice would be to purchase for both sides:
1. Swivel bearings;
2. Wheel bearings;
3. New hub nuts and washers;
4. An axle gasket set;
5. New brake disc mud guards (they will probably be shot and are quite cheap to buy);
6. Swivel pins top and bottom.
I bought everything from www.paddockspares.com
Hope that helps.
Ps While your about it considor replacing the steering ball joints and check to see that the steering box drop-arm is well secured. Mine wasn't and the car drove like a pig as a result.

Hi FridgeFreezer, Police springs, sounds interesting, where did you buy them.
I'm assuming that you didn't have a mate (with socket set in hand) with you the last time you were pulled by the feds ?

I believe that the V8 Disco is about the same weight as the TDi, in which case a 3 door KERBWEIGHT is 1920kgs.
I'm more concerned about your fuel consumption - we have a TDI200 and always get about 800+kms on a tank !!

Thanks to all, have adjusted the alan key locknut combo and the results are great.
Did it a bit too tight at first and got lumpy steering, but backed it off a bit and all feels fine now. Equally importantly, I now know how to play about with it if the adjustment needs any further refinement.
Thanks very much to all contributors,
Cheers
