  1. I am just fitting another engine into my 96 Discovery (3.9 V8 serpentine). The engine going in is from a Range Rover ( year not known but a serpentine ). I forgot to take both exhaust manifolds off the old engine as the new engine had 1 manifold on it. I do have another range Rover manifold BUT my question is, will the Range Rover manifolds marry up to the Land rover downpipes as the manifolds look slightly different. Thanks for any help.

  2. If the flexplate is damaged, as its only a bit of posh tin i would get a new one in case it leads to damage to the torque convertor ie not running true even though it is balanced.

    Lynall

I need to make myself a bit clearer I think. The flexplate is bolted to a flywheel type of affair and the damage has been done to the engine side of the flywheel/flexplate. I think it was a series of peaks and troughs metal type of thing bolted to the flywheel. Very difficult to explain without a picture. The actual flexplate is totally undamaged and will be fine. Hope this makes things a litle clearer.

  3. I have just taken out the engine of my 96(N) Discovery V8(Hotwire) and found that it has thrown a rod to the extent that it has a Big hole in the block on both sides of number 3 and 7 and the camshaft has been smashed through the back of the engine and impacted on the flex plate ripping off all the metalwork(if you know what I mean). I think the metalwork or referance sensor is not used on this model as there are no pick up sensors in the bellhousing or on the engine. I am hoping to get the flexplate re-balanced and use it again. Any ideas if this should be ok? or does anyone have a good flexplate?

  4. Do you have volume controls etc mounted on the instrument cluster surround?

If so I suspect it is for them. Un-fortunately mine had already been butchered so I can't take a look and confirm.

    Pete.

Not sure, I will have to check. Have'nt driven it yet as I bought it non running. Just in the middle of the engine swap so don't know my way round it too well.

  5. Does the red one have just two wires in it?

If it does it is the input for the sub-woofer (which has its own amp in the back door). You can cut the iso connector off and fit phone plugs to allow it to connect to an after market head unit.

    Pete.

Funny you should say that. As I looked at the photo just a minute ago, I thought that must be it so if you are also confirming the same I will go with that. Any idea what the white one is?

  6. I have not got round to doing any work on my 96 discovery 3.9 yet as I only got it pushed into my garage today and need to swap the engine over. I took a quick look at the radio iso connectors(as the radio was removed by the seller) and there appears to be 4 iso type connectors. 2 standard radio ones, a white one and from memory a purple one. Anyone know waht the spare 2 are? Thanks very much.

  7. The sub in the back door has it's own amp, and is driven off two separate wires on another plug next to the ISO plug. I cut this off and wired two phono plugs on to them and connected them to the head units pre-out sockets. This gives a nice base from the back, nothing excellent but then again they are 12 year old factory speakers.

If you don't connect those wires up the back door speaker will do nothing

Ta very nuch for the info.

  8. When dealing with ABS systems in the past I have never needed more than an AVO meter. In the first instance I always jack up each wheel in turn and check the output of the sensor using the smallest voltage setting on the selector. In all cases, which ever sensor does not give a reading will be the trouble and replacement of that sensor has cured the problem for me. Sometimes when the new sensor is fitted the warning light does not go out straight away (if at all it is on when you start off) as the ecu needs to get a wheel speed agree/disagree message from the sensor. Apart from this, as long as the ECU is getting at least 13.2 volts I have always managed to fix them this way. I must admit that I am not a Land Rover technician ( BMW and Mercedes tech) but despite having all the technical tools, this way has always worked and been faster than the hi tech approach. Hope that this method can be applied and will work for you, although as your problem is intermittent, you will have to have the fault present before it will be able to be detected this way as it sounds that the sensor is failing rather than completely failed.

  9. no, any stereo will suffice. just double check but your car should have ISO connections and the radio should have similar. the door speaker(S) provide low end reinforcement yes, but dont worry it's already wired in and taken off the rest of the speaker harness' with low pass filters already on. no sub output required, but almost all current market radios have them anyway.

you may be interested to know another little addition you can make if you dont already have them, is buy the A-pillar covers with built in tweeters. i'll dig out the part number for you a bit later unless someone beats me to it. the wiring will probably already be in the pillars for them (was last time i did one), so it's literally plug and play.

hopefully that helped. need any help just shout. this was my job up until recently when i got fed up of doing it day in day out

    jim

Many thanks for that info. Graham.

  10. Hi,

Just got my non runner 1996 Discovery delivered ( bargain on ebay...or so I think so far) but there is no radio in it and the battery is flat so couldnt test. Not owned or driven one before but looking round there seems to be a speaker in the back door. There are speakers in the front door and rear pillars so would the back door be a bass speaker and do i need a radio to suit? I have a flip up screen radio dvd player to fit in it ( for my daughter you understand) which drives a rear headrest screen but not sure if this has a bass output. Anyway, any info on the standard radio system and Back door speaker would be appreciated.

I have bought a good Serpentine engine as apparently the engine does not turn over. I found wrapped up in the glove box a section of camshaft about 3 inches long so have no idea if this has been rectified as the engine is in 1 piece and the gentre gasket looks new. Common problem???

  11. Hi first post on this great site.

I am just about to get my discovery which does not run and need to pick it up on a trailer. Can anyone tell me how much the vehicle weighs so I can make sure i rent the correct trailer. Failing being able to get a trailer, do i have to disconnect both propshafts if i want to tow it.

It is a non runner as the owner says that the bottom end is locking up when you try to start it...hydraulic lock???

Anyway I have a spare 3.9 engine if the worse comes to the worse. It is a serpentine if it makes any difference.

    Thanks for any help. Graham.
