  1. Just to add some context around the Subaru Outback alternative...the modern Boxer diesels are notorious for breaking their timing chains and crank shafts. My colleague's Outback has just had catastrophic engine failure at 80k miles. One Subaru engine re-builder said that he had done well to get to that mileage. I'm beginning to think that there is no such thing as bullet proof modern motoring?
  2. Thanks everyone for the timely responses. Generally everyone is pointing towards a fuel system leak (fuel pipes, pick-ups, low pressure fuel returns, banjo bolts etc.). Not imminent injector pump failure then? £££££££ ? Cheers All.
  3. Dear members of this forum, I wonder if some of the diesel gurus on here can advise on a course of action for my buddy who has an issue with his 300 tdi defender 90 please? The Landy is on a T plate and he has had it from new, it has been immaculately maintained and now has 2.2k miles on the clock and has been very reliable up until now. The symptoms are (apologies, this is pasted from an email)... The first is starting difficulties. After the engine has rested for 12 hours, there appears to be no fuel in the system and takes several prolonged efforts to start her. Once started, there are no problems throughout the day and will always start at the touch of the key and no need to wait for the glow plugs to do their bit. The second problem is the engine randomly almost cutting out and just going down to tick over for a short space of time. Some times this is just like a sudden misfire or sometimes, the engine dies for 100m but then runs without issue. The latter occurred after a long trip back from The Lakes when driving up the hill from Halkyn to the Holywell by pass. It is always a worry if this happens when overtaking! We have made sure that the lift pump is OK and made sure that the stop solenoid is nice and secure. As always thoughts and comments are very much appreciated. Thanks!
