  1. Just a quick question. How much is it to tax a freelander? Is it more than a car?
  2. Thanks for that. So I assume they are also a permanent 4x4. In which case is the IRD on the BMW engines a different and hopefully sturdier make than is fitted to the rover engines and are the propshafts and viscous couplings the same on the petrol and diesels, as these also appear to be a weak point. Put simply if I buy a diesel instead of a petrol will I have less risk problems with the IRD, props and VCU. Also assume the BMWs dont suffer the same head gasket failures as the petrols models.
  3. Am I right in beleiving the early TD4s all had a BMW engine fitted? And if so do these engines have an IRD that has the same well known problems the petrol models are known for?
  4. Is part number 3 on the diagram on the right the viscous coupling I keep hearing about? I can see why the IRD is so expensive, are they a big job to replace on a driveway?
  5. Thanks guys. Are there any of these components known to be wary of when viewing a second hand freelander and any tests you can advice me to try.
  6. Never owned or driven a 4x4 before so excuse me if the answer to this is obvious. What does the transfer box do on a freelander? I'm guessing its something to do with the four wheel drive. Can someone explain the principle please. Also is the four wheel drive selected from stationary or can it be engaged whilst the vehicle is moving? Early days for me and I'm doing my homework to see what I'm about to let myself in for.
  7. Was told today that in 2000/1 the freelanders were rebadged the old x, xi, xie becoming the S, GS, and SE respectively. Does this also mean that these rebadged cars are now referred to as Mk 2 freelanders? I also beleive some other changes took place regarding headlamp changes etc. Was the problem related to the headgaskets rectified in these later models ie upgraded head gaskets or would these later models still have been fitted with the same engine probs?
  8. Thanks Jules got my eye on an ES but didnt know it was the top spec. Also got a 4tdi I'm interested in just got get the price sorted now. Thanks
  9. Thanks Jules I'll check it out. Can anyone point me in the direction of a website that will tell me the different specs of older models. Landrovers is only interested in telling me about the new models.
  10. Perhaps ebay isnt the best guide to prices then thanks. I would value opinions on what i could get for £2000 - £2500
  11. Thanks guys. only got £2500 to spend on one and havin watched ebay for a few weeks it appears I'm looking at a 1999 (T) for that sort of money, would you say that was about right?
  12. Hi guys my first post and guess youve heard it all before. About to buy my first freelander and have been reading yr threads on head gasket probs. I know to look for gunge in the rocker cover and let it run for a while to check for overheating but are there any other signs I can look for if there is a head gasket problem? Also I'm a bit worried having read that in some cases when the head gasket has gone its knacked the engine as well. Can anyone give me more info on this. One more thing is there a Mk 1 and Mk 2 etc and what years did the change take place and how do I tell one from the other.
