  2. Dear All, Greetings!

This is my first post on this site as I'm currently a Ford Galaxy owner. My Galaxy, a 52 plate 1.9tdi Ghia, has now completed over 190,000 miles and I will be looking to replace it around March 2010.

My question to the Forum is this:- Given that the need for the huge load lugging interior of the Galaxy (with all seats removed) is now less of a requiremnt, I still need to be able to transport trolley mounted medical equipment weighing around 74Kgs and 1.5M in height (Trolley can be laid on its back). Is the cargo area of the F2 up to the job with the seats folded down? The vehicle also needs to tow a medium sized (5.1M) Rigid Inflateable Boat on a single axle, unbraked trailer, is a Freelander 2 eg a 2.2TD4e GS a good choice as a replacement vehicle?

    Best Regards,

    Tangiedog

    Hi,

You will find the answers here:

    http://www.landrover.co.uk/gb/en/vehicles/freelander-2/features-and-specifications/technical-specifications.htm

I think the answer is "yes" to both questions.

The engine is far more powerful than a 1.9tdi.

I have recently acquired a FL2 TD4, done the first 1,000 miles, I am impressed.

I also have a Ford Focus 1.8 TDCI (118hp) -latest technology of Ford - and the Freelander feels faster and really agile, taking into consideration that it's far bigger and heavier... the 160hp and, most of all, the 400Nm torque help a lot.

  3. Thank you for the link, I have added it to Favorites.

Having a look to the Specs, I have noticed that the UK equipment levels (S, GS, XS, HSE) are slightly different than the ones for continental Europe. Here in Romania we can choose between E, S, SE an HSE. The optionals included in each package are more or less the same (e.g. S=E, GS=S, XS=SE etc). I am now looking forward to get my S (or GS in UK) an I hope that the car will have parking aid (rear), included in GS.

Off topic: Does anybody know a link to a free VIN decoder? Starting with Freelander 2 the VINs are different than before and can't be decoded with older softwares such as CalVin.

  4. Hi, yes that what i was thinking, but looking at the back of the audio unit, it is 2 ISO blocks and one other block, that dont seem to be tampered with, one thing though i have now found that the previous owner had a telephone kit in it, and following the wires down it looks like they may have cut the cables to fit it, i am going to have to wait till next weekend so i can pull out the wiring adn see what has been done, i dont suppose you know where i can get a wiring diagram?

In my 2003 FL I have replaced the factory RadioCD unit with a Sony. I was not able to find an aftermarket unit comptible with the steering wheel controls, as the factory unit was made by Visteon (not a common brand). However, the ISO connectors were 100% compatible, all other functions (incl on/off...) were the same.

My suggestion is: try to identify the make/model of the unit, then search on the net; if not, you can search for "ISO connector wiring diagram" and use any result, it should work.

  5. Hello,

Please excuse the lack of technical speak as I know very little about what makes cars work although I am keen to learn. So I bought some new brighter headlamp bulbs for my Freelander2 and stuck my head under the bonnet to change them (after turning down the offer of the man at Halfords to fit them). However it looks like I might have to move a few bits (very technical) to get the required access, is this the case or does anyone have a simple approach?

    Thanks in advance.

    SmallRoad

    Hi,

did you manage to replace the bulb?

It seems there are not many FL 2 owners on this forum.

I hope the reason is there are no tech problems with FL2 - and this is because I have just decided to sell my FL 1 and buy a brand new FL 2.

In a couple of weeks I will be able to advise you upon replacing bulbs, I think :-)

  6. Thank you for reply, I wish it is that simple.

This morning I found about 50ml of coolant under the car.

Could you please confirm that this is the part (picture attached):

FF002632 - Inlet Manifold to Cylinder Head Gasket

    Application Details:

    Freelander 1998-2006 Models

    1.8 litre 'K' Series Petrol

    post-6890-125498246509_thumb.jpg

  7. It is most likely the O-rings on the inlet manifold, the part costs ~10 euro and the job can be done yourself with a 13mm socket in about 10 minutes.

  8. Dear All,

My FL 1.8 (2003) was starting loosing coolant at 80,000km (50k miles).

The head gasket was replaced at 65k km (early 2007), when eveything had to be replaced as the coolant mixed with the oil.

Now, the symptom was the following: when driving the car daily nothing happened; when the car stayed in garage for 2 or 3 weeks, the coolant level dropped to zero (in the "jar"). Coolant drops found under the car.

I took the car to service and, after 24 hours, they were able to find a small leak on the cylinder head (they had to use a mirror and a lamp, it was behind the engine...).

They said that the cylinder head may be cracked.

What do you think? is that possible?

The quotation they prepared for me is huge - about 2,500 Eur + VAT, including cylinder head - about 1,400 Eur (over 1,000 GBP)+ VAT (!).

I want to sell the car now...

    Please comment, thank you

  9. Let's be honest, the 1.8 is by far underpowered.

I was driving mine for almost 3 years now, I love this car, but all the time I get the feeling that the little engine is struggling to push (or pull...) the car forward. You can simply feel it!

My next SUV shall have at least 150hp, and it'll be a Diesel.

  10. In my previous car the doors would automatically lock upon reaching a certain speed.

Is it possible to have the same functionality on a Freelander (I)?

    Thank you

I think this is possible IF you choose to install an additional car alarm which will have this option.

The previous owner of my FL has a Viper alarm which, among others, locks the doors when turning the ignition key.

The original remote control still works - I may choose which one I use :-) .

You should ask a car alarm installer, I think.

  11. I think we should talk on this forum about the positive aspects of our Freelanders.

This year I have been traveling a lot with my 1.8:

    - Bucharest (RO) - Budapest (HU) and back - about 2,000km

    - Bucharest (RO) - Serbia - Montenegro - Croatia and back - about 3,000km.

    No technical problems at all.

The car is spacious, so long trips do not cause you claustrophobia.

The roads are not always in good shape, so FL it is much better than a normal car.

You can enjoy fantastic landscapes - I attach for you some pics from Croatia and Montenegro.

  13. hi i am ovidiu from romania

    excuse my english !

i just had the same ,or something like that with my freelander, after i run in to some big holes in the road, and i hit them hard.road are in romania in some parts . i have the 1.8 k , sw,.and many times it did not shows all lights on board and car canot start. it hapend also during driving on road, city roads, that the engine stops and cut off all power. after many key turns, i was able to restart the car. for 3 weeks i live with this. i went to a mecanic and he said ,that if the engine stop during drive, is from the contact,. so i find out that, on my one, that the fuse box in the car had not been well put, it was moving up and down, just enough when i hit the holes , to pull a little the cabels from the contact, under the steering wheel,. soo i unpluged the contact C028-, spray some contact oil, tight the heads of end wire, and pluged back in . and no priblme since then. all the lights are ok, it does not make any problems when i turn the key.

i told you what hapend to me, and hope is so easy at you too. just a bad contact wire.

when you turn the key and shows nothing, or just very week some light, touch the wires belongs to the contact, underside of steering column, they are about 7 wires, female is brown , and you will see if the respond and shows all lights.

if you have the rave , look for in connector, and find C028 conector , there you have a picture with it.

    hope it helps. by

salut Ovidiu, bine ai venit pe forum... suntem doi acum :-)

si eu tot cu 1,8k ma "distrez"

  14. Guys, don't crucify me if I suggested the head gasket may be the problem - if you would go to the site I suggestet to check, you could see that one indication for HG problems is progressive loss of power which seems to me pretty close to the description of Leonid.

And yes, I know that fuel pump is not in the way, I just supposed that the mechanics checked some other visible stuff when they replaced the pump.

I can't wait to find out the real reason of this!

  15. I believe that modern pads are harder than the asbestos ones of the past and that this leads to greater disc wear.

well, regardless the reason, definitely is a trend to replace discs at much shorter intervals than 10 years ago... and this costs us a lot

  16. The author of the article says that the installation described is done on a Rover 200, which is probably the reason to modify some parts (lack of space, compared to a Freelander).

I would not do such modification by myself, as cooling is critical. But I am not a mechanic.

    Viorel

  17. I also have a 1.8 engine, please check again the head gasket related issues (although I think that the mechanics checked those when they replaced the fuel pump). Check again the coolant and the oil. When engine stops, does any warning light go on?

By the way, while surfing for such problem I found this "wonder product":

    http://www.heal-a-seal.com/

I personally don't trust such stuff, have any of you tried it?

  18. If vibrations appear only when driving within a certain speed interval (eg between 80 and 120 km/h, or so) there is a good chance that the problem is simpler - you have to check the wheels (if there are any bends, hits etc). Then you need to equilibrate the wheels. A DYI, free of charge solution to check this is to switch the front wheels to the rear ones, if the vibrations are less present then you got a problem with the front ones.

However, vibrations generated by wheels/tires problems are sent to the steering wheel as well, so if you don't feel it trembling in your hands, forget this idea.
