  1. I don't like Japanese trucks as they look brash and bling. Not overly impressed by the ride either in most cases.

The green oval has more character. :)

Got to admire the Japs for their reliability though, this Toyota just goes on and Ariston

    here

    Not dialup friendly!!

Every time I see that... truely is the best top gear ever, and it was indestructible, just don't like the looks of them though. and if I laid my hands on an E reg hilux, I'd probably do the same.

on a side note, anyone read the comment at the side of the video. obviously from some yank not quite understanding.

  2. The problem is, Japanese engineers and designers, originally copied every western design under the sun (no pun intended), and then improved upon it, as in britain we haven't the money or the market to actually develop anything of our own to any real success. the same does not just apply to cars, it applies to everything we do, not enough money gets put behind it, and it ends up just being a bit rubbish and too expensive.

  3. Probably stick it in a bank for a start, given that you'd get over £10k EVERY DAY settle my debts and do something similar to this guy:

Would have to get my flying license, and give a big lump to the New Zealand concern who are trying to build brand new DH Mosquito's and have my own Night Fighter, would obviously need my own hanger so buy one or get one built up Popham or Compton Abbas and just enjoy buzzing Sting's and Madonna's mansions with all the beauty of two Rolls Royce Merlin :D oh and pay one of my friends who's had enough of tooling with MoD bombers to service it for me, I'm sure he'd enjoy being paid to polish the Merlin rocker covers while rebuilding Suzuki GSXR's in the corner of the hanger ;)

except I already have the first bit, but saving for a week and getting the airline pilots license.. hmm.. just like John Travolta. and I'd buy a fair lump of an aircraft for charter company.

  4. Hydraulic winch - no one nicks them as the tea leaves are too fik to wark it art mate

my hope exactly, we installed coachbolts and big padlocks to the doors on the wolf, as a deterrent, but as the guy in the body shop observed, if they have any brains, they would unscrew the door hinges! so we're having that made teef proof. Security glass helps too.

    Security

of course they'd have to repaint it quick if they wanted to get it down the road without sticking out like a sore thumb if they were after the actual truck.

  5. slightly off the subject, but my older brother in december 2004 (dates are important here) was attacked by a group of 6-10 lads during a night out, they put a bottle across his head, my brother managed to leave the place, and was given a headstart by the bouncers, unfortunately this group caught up with him in their car, jumped out and brutally attacked him, the girl he was with knew a few of them, so we were able to give names and addresses to the police. my bothers face needed 3 metal plates to reconstruct his face. the police told us that these guys had no previous convictions, so were not arrestable.. they didn't even check, they all had previous charges of assualt battery ABH you name it.. 3 months passed and they sent a letter to them asking "when would it be convenient to arrest you?" and got a letter back saying "some time next month would be fine" after they can put together an alaby (however you spell it) when they tell the police their story, they tell my brother that he is lying and that he attacked them, or that they weren't there. the police believed them! my brother is not stupid, he would not attack 6 guys. come june 2005, 6 months after the attack, two of them finally go to court. in august 2005 one got away with it, and the other was given a few hours community service. for GBH with intent (to murder?) maximum sentence for this is 15 years.

honestly I think that is criminal. when these people do become criminals, they know that no matter what happens they will get away with it.

as for witnesses, the bouncer changed his story half way through, and in the middle of a busy town at 11pm on a saturday night noone "saw" this happening. 2 hours later someone was murdered on the same street. it might have been the same people.

  6. You could make your own starting from a Sankey trailer as a base. That way you get a reliable trailer and the rest is as reliable as you make it/the bits you put into it. Making your own you get exactly what you want and not someone elses idea of what you want.

    Chris

I'm sure the desert-wolf trailers are well made, but WOW! the price!! i put the 65000R into xe.com and it came out at £6000UKP!!! crikey! you can buy a lot of ex military sankey ones for that money, you could even have them chrome plated!

seriously though... the military sankey's are bullet proof, and use a lot of LR type parts, so carrying spares shouldn't be too bad, and they already use LR wheels, and are the right height for the tow hitch, and use NATO hitches which are ideal for off road use.

I have also been looking at the Sankey Trailers, are they up to the job, knowing that the MOD don't let anything go unless it has been abused by a whole batallion of squaddies and driven over a land mine. (of course at £500 I could spend £2000 and replace a lot of it with what I want.) do you think its up to the job? NATO hitch is ideal as we have one on the wolf.

Petergg really keen on that trailer on e-bay, your not hoping to bid on it are you. don't want to drive up the price between the two of us!

The only thing that is really putting me off those desert wolf trailers as you say is the price.

  7. you can always make your own fridge,

look in the chandlery catalogues and you will find fridge building kits. You could make a custom sized fridge to suit whatever available space you have

    Not a Desert Wolf but,

    One like this

    Peter

Thanks Guys, I'll definitely follow the advice on looking into making my own, problem is, I want something that is pretty garaunteed to keep working, thats why I'm buying a GPS as opposed to making one, (no its not black magic). Possibly that trailer is a tad expensive for a second hand one, but I'll keep an eye on it, and if it looks like not selling, I'll offer a lower price.

  8. Nick

    18 months.

You do realize that you will need to permenantly export your vehicle if you are out of the UK for 12 months and over.

Nasty things like road tax and SORN as told to me by the DVLA.

    Unless somebody knows better.

Forgive me, I was talking rubbish earlier. There are no plans on this trip taking any longer than 12 months. I don't know what came over me! thanks for pointing that out, pretty certain the guy who is organising that aspect of the trip is aware of that.

    Thanks for the links Margaret.

  9. There was a superb trailer at the Belgium National, very similar to the Desert Wolf, but with coil suspension, they were one of the sponsors / static displays. I cannot remember their company name, no doubt someone with a good memory will be along soon. Seemed ideal with all the cooking / washing / fridges in the trailer leaving the tow vehicle for people and clothing.

I would disagree with taking a leaf sprung trailer behind a coil sprung Defender. If the springs on the 110 could be the same as the trailer you would need less spares? But on the other hand you can always get a local to bash you a new leaf. Guess whatever you decide in the middle of nowhere you will remember this post!

Hopefully, we shouldn't be needing new springs, but thanks for the suggestion, I had already thought of it as a useful place to store spare tyres, and I really like the idea of having a rooftent on the trailer.

We chose our wolf because the idea was it would stand up to much more abuse :o than a standard defender or camel trophy vehicle. The Wolf wheels added to that, don't suppose anyone knows where/ how to get more if we need them? ours were included in the truck with 2 spares already.

  10. Where are you going, how many are travelling in one vehicle??

between 3-6 people for a round the world trip (not via SA though) and should take a maximum of 18 months.

Would you like more pointers to SA stuff?

Information on Fridges if you have any suggestions, trying to pay for as little as possible, its surprising how much people give you when you say that you may appear in land rover magazines and tv sporting their logo!

  11. Hello, I was browsing the net for ideas on storage for my expedition, and stumbled across this, I hadn't really thought of trailers before, but this looks the muts nuts, and it would seem to match our wolf with the name and the lockers on the side, has anyone had any experience with these people/ their product. I'll be dealing with the UK importer.

Is it as good as it looks/ is claimed to be? Or are they too much hassle for a big expedition?

    Desert Wolf Trailers

    I'd probably paint it gold.

(see my website in the footer)

  12. You could buy a lightweight if you fancied....

    [see my sig... ;) ]

    Cheers

    Mark

Thanks, but I bet it would be taking the mick to ask less than £1k, sorry, am a bit skint, that one was going to be a quick investment, incase it was worth more after some work, certainly didnt look like it needed a clean like yours!

    Thanks anyway,

    Nick

  13. Have sent this to Greenpeace. Bet it doesnt go on their website though.

    I BET!

good points though, I just hope they do wake up to what reality is actually about.

I'm all for conserving the environment, and taking action against greedy polluters, Equally I HATE ignorance!

hope it gets read past "counterpoint"

  14. trusting you enough not to tell me its not worth it, and buy it yourselves as you probably already own one. but is this worth it?

    the car

it will probably cost me £30 to get there and £30 in fuel. so at least £700 in total. is it a waste of money?

    Thanks in advance

    Nick
