  1. I went Saturday, the attrition was pretty high, I'll have a vid up soon, there was awesome mog axled thing, but it had a major failure and left earlier.

http://www.offroad-armory.com/ built the buggy, lovely thing, performed very well.

    39508_10150220630905083_605065082_13797466_4756436_n.jpg

The Buggy is a D&G twisted customs buggy with Spidertrax / D&G Portals . The internal Mog gears let up :( But it will be fixed for Manby 450Hp & a twatt driving did it !!!

Great to do something different a little too much hanging around but im sure next year there get that sorted.

Nice to have music at the event & commentry :D

Chears Rob & team well done !

  2. You could use some of these:

    nut.jpg

Which will be launched shortly by a company somewhere near here!

    winch.jpg

Both the silver and blue bit are perfectly round and smooth with no edges to grip on. The blue bit is free to spin on the silver bit once tightened. They are removable and re-usable using the supplied key. They will be available in M10 only, for bumper bolts and winch mounting bolts.

This isn't really an advert - as they have not been launched yet more a give-away / competition!

I will give a free set of four plus a key to the first person who can correctly explain how the torque is transmitted from the key to the nut (remember both bits are circular and smooth).

It does not use friction and the key will transmit enough torque to shear an M12 bolt.

    Si

UMMMM very sexy how much Simon send me 12 please :D
  3. long way off atm but just wondering if anybody got a ball park figure of how much a set of spider9 axles complete with shafts arbs etc would cost? i want to run 38" boggers but dont have lots of money to throw at it but dont want to break everything just wondering if its worth considering or isit out of my budget

    thanks in advance

    UMMMMM SpiderTax axles with Moly tubes & Pro-knuckes & D&G portals ;)

Or a set of Landrover 101 axles with ARB front ,detroit rear with fab work & diif skimmed to give anothe 7/8" clearance £4k !!! 1 1/2" shafts 7 i never even scratched the axles with 42s & 300hp :D

add another £3k & fit disc brakes .

complete set of cvs & shafts brand new where £200 not that i ever even changed a wheel bearing in 3 years!

  4. Surely that's your problem not the engine's?

The reason engines have EMS rather than clockwork is that, for a given engine, you get better power, economy, driveability, reliability etc. from electronics than you do from clockwork.

Anyway, this is in danger of once again going off into the weeds - if you're scared of electronics then electronics is not for you, so why even read the thread let alone bother to post whining about how you don't like computers.

Havnt got a problem with electronics my Ls has an after market loom & fully mappable ECU that we fitted .Along with 2 GPS a tablet & 3 trip computers .I have a plug & play module to diagnose problems from my laptop .

But why the fcuk would you want to get that involved with a diesel is all i am saying unless you are talking 5-6oo hp diesels with propane & NOZ etc

  5. ;)

get out of the dark ages pete!

if you want stupid horsepower for a drag car - cool go get a supercharged V8 or something. But i think 600hp is a bit of overkill really for offroad events.

As for non powerful heavy and slow diesels...... whats wrong with the 3L twin turbo bmw diesel? In standard trim it puts out 420lb-ft and 300bhp in a package that weighs less than a tdi. A simple ECU remaps will get 350+bhp and 550lb-ft, all that torque and power at much lower revs than you'll get from a v8 as well.

    What more do you need?

expensive? Not really. You can pick up the whole vehicle for less than a turnkey 300bhp LSx from the states.

Im out of the Dark ages & live in the real world with things that work & are reliable ;)

Dont care what you say unless you have full BMW or VW technical support along with you i would never take a tweaked BMW ,VW etc engined truck to a 10 day comp acroos the other side of Europe! Foreget about the cost of buying either it would be the setting up costs to put a big modern diesel in a buggy.

I looked seriously & even went to the US to see the Duramax twin turbo diesels & came back blown away by the power etc but scared ****less by the wiring & computers

Spoke to VW Uk race team guys about a V10 diesel & they laughed & said good luck making that work in anything other than a VW !!

Not saying it cant be done but i thought the idea of running an oil burner was reliability & running costs. :D

As to why you would want 600hp in a challenge truck . I have around 450hp fine with 44s in mid range box but it wont spinn up all 4 in high 3rd or 4th

1km of bog in med box 4th gear is cool but 1kn in high box 4th would be better :D

seriously too much power means at least you have it when needed & when not the engine isnt being stressed

Drive my Buggy & tell me it doesnt need more power??

  6. Are the engine regulations not a little different for diesel and petrol which distorts the balance?

Maybe but what does a 500hp Diesel Brand new cost & for that matter weigh!!!!!

Mind you dontvknow why i am sticking up for V8s when my blew a ring getting it of the trailer at Billing today :(

Mind you nothing a nice new LS7 wont help chear me up UMMMMMMMMMMMM 600hp with a little playing or maybe LS9 Super charged tinkered with 900hp all for about £18k Diesel 900HP ?????

  7. So, I burn extra fuel to get the emissions down? Interesting. Assuming that I was not bothered about exhaust emissions (which, of course, I am!) could I get better fuel economy with the same power by removing this 'post burn injection' from the injection map?

    Chris

Wooooh this is an exiting tread  Why not just wind the elastic band up a little more

But seriously what is everone trying to achieve????

All the guys we race against have tuned tweaked etc TD5s or TDIs & to be honest on a average say 70km race day they burn around 1/3 less fuel than the Big V8s with a lot less power !

How much does it cost to modify these diesels to get 1/2 the power we get from the V8s ??

  8. Well thanks chaps that have signed up for next years Comp

Spoke to Mr T today & really we are already there with enough of a deposit with what got sent today

He is going to comfirm that he can get the site for the last weekend of January & that will be it

Please can i start to have sensible suggestions of what you would like via email

    peter@whitmanbevis.co.uk

What i will also try to do is tap up some sponsors to give prizes as well ;)love ya LIZ & Jimbo

Would like to point out entries are still open & will be for months yet for ANY vehicle the only rules are no winning it will be Extreme

Not bad that took what 2 1/2 weeks to sort well done guys thanks

Right started to get some sponsors to chip in to help out with prizes etc.

    So far we have confirmed

X-Eng Simon will donate 2 ground Anchors.

    Frog Island {Dan Elis} 2 Super Winch LP 8500s

Ruftracks {Andy T} will chip in TBC

Whitman Bevis Ltd Advertising banner for prize giving & Podium.

    Television X {cant say yet!!}

As some may or may not know the event once we have reached 12 teams the rest of the entry money goes to charity. So what i am proposing is that if we get enough sponsor prizes for 1st , 2nd ,3rd then 1 special prize

After that we will have a charity auction on the saturday for the charity so come on guys chip in

  9. Right

Mr T has just rung me & ask {as obviously i am the best }to be the drivers representative for the proposed 2011 Pheonix Heavy.

    Date end January 2011

Cost per vehicle {teams of 2} £350 .minimum of 8 teams required or cost will go up to cover £5600 if thats what we all want?

    Vehicle requirements.

    1. Minimum 38" tyres.

    2. Any axles.

    3. Minimum of 3 winches.

    4. Fridge.

    5. Truck nutts.

    6. Naked photo of Fluffer on all trucks

He is more than happy to arrange an event for us but with a few conditions. In order of priority as i see it !!

    1. He receives a deposit of £100 per vehicle by the end of August 2010 {Andy please post payment & address details}.Until he receives the required amount no more will be arranged.

    2. We all seemed in earlier posts to agree of a date around end of January 2011 is this ok to most as if i say all that will never happen. Excuses of weather are not an excuse!!! yes you Rob.

    3. Then in the meantime can we have suggestions from ONLY those who have sent deposits & Mr T {can you keep us informed on that please!} or who will definatley go To what type of event you would all like.

    I will start

    1. Any winging minus 1 section!

    2. The organisers decision on any cheating or rule twisting not deamed as in the spirit of the event minus whatever they think!!

    3. Friday night has a night section approx 2hrs obviously a bit tamer than the daytime.

4.No pointless deep bogs yes mud but not stupid !!

    5. The longer the sections the better.

    6. Punches during section to ensure that all get to required points.

    7. Compulsory break i think is good & must be back at check point no excuses including break downs!!

    8. Support crews allowed on site but only in pit area can leave to help team but team will get a penalty??

    9. No special tasks etc.

    10.Compulsory 10 pints saturday night !!

Lastly just encase ive not made it clear apart from deposit & cost bit all rules & format are for all to agree / suggest to Andy T then it will be up to him to decide

As Captain Picard says make it so

Please post replies on Devoon Forum if possible :D

  10. Thats one way of putting it - a huge explosion front the front end

saw the axle jammed absolutely solid, and the prop destroyed as I had power on :(

Removed KAM Fusable stubs, and KAM Aerospace shafts, all looked ok, removed remainder of the

propshaft(s) and that left an empty axle casing with just the diff

Diff still absolutely solid - shoved the outer bits of the casing abck on, wheels & drove home in 2 wd

So, today will see whats gone, place your bets on a KAM 4.75 Pegged CWP or the ARB ?

My money at the mo is on the ARB, which is a shame

cos if thats the case I can't scream "Warranty"

    Ho Hum

    Nige

Was that you, with the other land rover winching your landy on to its side?

It did look like someone was having a bad day! :P

Cant see what the fuss was over that little hole :D

Thanks for all for a fun few hours managed to find a few more small issues with the truck hopefuly thats it now for Croatia

  11. Hi All,

The Argyll / Tay / Pheonix has as many know been watered down to standard trucks .

They have said they will run a proto event if they get enough enquiries.

Please email Colin or Richard or go on D4x4 web site & put your name up please or it will never happen.

    Thanks Peter

  12. Hi!

Wanted to ask you if someone has made a conversion-fitted the portals on to a land rover axles

could you post some pics where i could see it detailed?

and how did you adapt the halfshafts?

p.s. sorry for bad englsih cuz i am from latvia.

Hummeer H1 drop boxes boled on ??? Seem to be doing it in the US

  13. I have a number of projects on the go at the mo, one close to douing about it one  is

the ability to have some On Board Air System

I have looked at (and admired) the Air Con Pump conversionsm, but time allowing and other work

means I needed a faster solution, and my current effort of trying to use my ARB Compressor  just doesn't do it !

As luck would have it a Twin Pump T Max Air compressor has come my way :) , and I have heard good things from these

both in terms of air delivery and reliability, so onme of these is going in to the 90

Hiowever, and where I need some help - the hose is one of those wippy things, which I loathe, also the connectors are

ones I have not seen before, yet at the end of the dial guage there is some rubber thin hose.

    So, me question is

Rather than using say "Spray Shop" thick hose - where can I get this thin air hose from ?

Also what / where can these fittings be obtained from

    post-22-126382473439_thumb.jpgpost-22-126382474868_thumb.jpg

I haven't cut the whippy hose up yet but would guess the hose at around say 8mm OD

so would guess the ID being 6/7mm ?

    HELP :D

    Nige

Mate run 24v through it as well :} pumped my 44 up in about 1 min from flat OOOOPS forgot front supply is 24v hose got quite hot though!!!

  14. I am sure lots of you have been busy pulling people out of the snow these last few weeks, however I have a question of morals.#

Aside from the fact that for 355 days a year we are 4 x 4 (insert offensive word) now we are everyones mate!

But in this increasing 'sue you as quick as look at you society' (which I hate) where does one stand in this situation for example

I was taking my normal route to work up a single track lane going up a hill and on a double bend there was a car that had come down wrapped around a tree. two squaddies from the local army base who I pass most mornings had lost their ford focus. They flagged me down I stopped and saw that the car was undrivable and they where unhurt. 'Could I pull them out' well I could but with a front wheel missing there where going nowhere, a double bend on slipery conditions I failed to see the point, I stood a good chance of been hooked up and being hit by the next person to come along.

I explained and offered them a life to their base which they readily accepted.

Does anyone else have a view on this.

Having had plenty of problems at work with lorries stuck on what looked liked a tiny piece of ice towing a loaded 44 tonne bulker (with a tractor or two) is very harzardous procedure.

We had a fuel delivery the other day and he got stuck by our tank he refused a tow on H and S grounds and insisted on chipping out with a plastic shovel -good luck with that then.

One does want to help but one does need to consider your own vehicle and possible damage to you and it.

I have pulled a few friends out and given the odd lift, i picked up our receptionist the other day much to the anoyance of her merc driving low profiled tyred estate agent husband who always looks down his nose at us agricultural types, he look quite cross form behind the net curtains!!

What are your views on !!

Stole the wifes Hummer to go to work {she was well happy i left her the Mitsubishi lol}.

Outside our site a neighbour that is always moaning about noise & deliveries etc asked me to tow his Toyota Hybrid out with my Hummer lol

I explained if i did then surley the extra fuel i would use to pull him out woul create more C02 thus next year the weather would be worse !!

So really i would be doing him a favour if i left him surely??

Got a funny look from him but still snatched him out with a webbing strap !!!! sounded good from my cab lol

  15. Popped over to Luton to get a new front prop, and the roads around Kimpton are in a VERY bad way. 2-3 foot high snow drifts in places, where it has blown over from a farmers field, and one whole lane blocked off.

On my way home, a John Lewis lorry had got himself stuck & the driver of a Defender who was passing started digging him out. 1 point to us.

This chap was in a rush to get off, and the digging was proving pointless, so I carried on with the winch. Another point to us.

As it was a 7.5 ton lorry, I could'nt get him all the way out, and left him to dig away the last couple of feet of snow.

By now another Defender had turned up, and we decided to barge through the lane that was closed off because of the drifts.

A hundred metres in front of the lorry, and a woman has beached her Mazda 6 in the middle of the road.

All Land Rover drivers.......front & centre please, start digging! Thats another point to our side.

A P38 came from behind the Mazda & started pulling, whilst the Defender drivers at the front shared pushing & digging duties.

By now, the road was fairly clogged up with traffic waiting to get by, so my mechanic came down the road to see why there was a queue.....in the big boy, his rather beautiful 101.

So thats 2 x Defenders, 1 x P38 and a 101 all mucking in with road clearing & recovery. Thats at least 5 points?

As we were all having quite a lot of fun as it happened, we needed some icing for our little cake. A cherry on top, so to speak.

    Enter a H2 Hummer.

The driver just sat inside smirking at us and laughing as we were all running and slipping about.

Anyway, he could not be bothered waiting for US to clear the road, so he tried reversing out back past the lorry, and got himself stuck!

We had just cleared the front blockage & all of us drove off to leave the stricken Hummer to sort himself out! :D

I have to say, we were very well represented & there were many admiring looks, and rounds of thanks as the Land Rovers did what they do best.

Aw, makes you feel warm all over doesnt it?

    Martin

Whats with the us & them bit over a badge you sad **** its just down to the thwack in the truck not what make it is!!

  16. Evening,

Well my last v8 overheated on me... And i don't want to cook my new 4.2 the same way so i've been thinking of what i can do to avoid this.

I've got a nice big ally rad mounted in the rear, a pair of fans, 1 1/2" hoses.... But i'm tempted to run an electric water pump like boothy has - Craig Davies.

Reading up on the craig davies site, there are a couple of ways of fitting them but the easiest way seems to be leave them running constant with no thermostat. I'm not overly keen about this. The pump impella is removed.

Or spend more money to buy a controller for it which from what i can work out, varies the voltage and thus varies the pump speed. But i don't seem convinced about this, due to the lack of flow until things heat up.

So what would people suggest ?

One thing i thought about, would be to use a thermostat from a v8 P38. Which is on the bottom hose by the rad. This way the electric pump will circulate the engine using a radiator bypass hose, then when the temp gets up to between 80 - 84C it starts to open, being fully open at 96 and now cirulate using the radiator with a secondary part of the thermostat closing off the bypass hose.

Another little thing that i'm not sure about, is my radiator has a cap and so i don't have an expansion tank - will this cause any problems or would i be better to fit one ?

    Thoughts ?

    Gordon

(Attached is a diagram from the p38 workshop manual - but the throttle housing pipe on mine will go back to the heater matrix return line)

I run without a thermostat or impellor & thats what all the race guys & manufacturer advise.

cant see why you would not want to circulate the water all the time if you dont you will boil the water in the block etc surely ??

  17. Very true! Even taking skill out of the equasion and probably you'll get 75% of the way for 25% of the cost. This is what is so good about this sport - even the best on paper may well not win!

Skill & how much you care about winning

My mate who is self proclaimed "crew Chief" {crew of 1  } flipped when we fitted the fridge & steroe to the Buggy .

"Race car mate Race Car!! what the F**k do you want a fridge in it for WEIGHT WEIGHT"

Personally we do try as hard as we can to do well but at the end of the day it is for fun ,i get enough stress & SH*T at work to take it all too serious .

I can see though why some teams get stressed about results etc as there buisiness /sponsorship relys on them proforming well.

We also dont help that situation by turning up having a laugh / taking the tiddle & doing reasonably well at the same time :D

Lets hope not too much money gets in the sport or it will change all that.

One of my foremen race World Rally cars {£300k Build costplus support!!!} he apparantly will never win as on every comp if he does well the BIG BOYS will lodge a official complaint at £300-500 a time & he has to pay equivalent to defend it .So he just takes it up the ass & looses.

Wonder what it was like in Portugal with a big prize fund at the camp at night ??

Manby is a really fun event with £1k cash prize & you would be surprised with some of the comments all over £1k & that is between "friends" so to speak ;) Imagine what it must be like in the STates with $100k plus prizes

  18. Maybe not cardboard, but a lot of the trophy raid trucks their main winches are home-brew centre mounted PTO or crank drive monsters that would see off any off-the-shelf winch for both power & speed. They usually have something like a T-max or DV9000 as backup.

Again, most of us have better things to do than reinvent the wheel (or winch), but there's no reason you can't make your own very successfully.

The winch i wanted really was the type fitted on the Armoured personel carriers that fire out the ground anchor winch up to it then automatically disengage :D

Imagine that " yep we did Ladoga but had to get out the truck twice to re-fuel "
