  1. Take the clutch off, make sure it fits the splines on the gearbox, and then try offering up the engine with no clutch on it, to see if it will go together.

That should point towards a problem, if there is one.... engines/gearboxes are notoriously difficult to line up sometimes....

    Hi Mate

Thanks for the tip, it makes sense and I will check the clutch mates with the splines. I am using the clutch and clutch cover that came withthe engine as both were almost new. I still have the clutch bits off the original engine both of which are also in good order so I can try these if this turns out to be the problem.

  2. Hi Guys

So I battled on for a while trying to get the new engine and the gearbox to come together and eventually gave up.

So I disconnected the gearbox and slid it back a bit and then dropped the new engine in.

The easy bit, or so I thought would be to offer up the gearbox, do up the studs reconnect evrything and that would be that.

Oh no, no matter what I tried I could not get the gearbox to line up correctly. I managed to get a couple of nuts on the top of the bell housing and thought I would then be able to do them up in sequence drawing the two together. This just wouldn't happen.

So my question is, has anyone else encountered this problem?

The back plate opf the new engine is a differnt shape to the one on the engine I removed but the studs do line up with the holes in the bell housing and it is the same depth.

The clutch plate is good, it is still aligned properly so the drive shaft should go in no problem. Did they ever change the diameter of the "hole" in the flywheel that takes the shaft or indeed did they change teh diameter of the drive shaft?

If anyone can shed any light on this it would be appreciated, I am running out of time and hair.............from pulling it out!!

  3. Hi Guys

I must be a glutton for punishment, whilst still trying to sort out my rear cross member issues :( I stumbled across a 21/4 petrol engine on ebay.

I was going to spend £40 on some of the oil additive that I have seen advertised that claims to solve the problem of a smokey old engine, so instead I spent £50 on an engine that has only covered 62,000 from new.

The old unit came out without any problems but for some reason the new engine won't mate up to the bell housing on the gearbox. I have managed to get the spline from the gearbox nicely aligned and the two have come together to the point where the studs are up against the bell housing rim they are just not lining up to the holes.

I have adjusted and re adjusted the chains that I am using to hold the engine but whatever I try the engine won't sit straight to allow the studs to line up.

Before I remove the gearbox and fit the engine and then refit the gearbox has anyone got any idea's.

    Thanks in advance

  4. If you have a crossmember that is a bad fit then the best way to sort it out is with the tub in place. You can then use the rear body bolts (10 across the back) to line the crossmember up. You can then judge what needs to be done to get the two attached to each other. If it's that bad, then cut either more of the chassis away or the extensions so you have a gap, then make plates up to sort it out. I know it will involve some cutting and then using 8 x plates, but it's the best of a bad lot really.

    Les.

    Hi Les

Thanks for the response, whilst I was at Christian Auto's yesterday another guy gave me the exact same adviceI so ground the welds off and I have started again.

I have now been able to identify the cause of the problem, there are heavy welds that were used to attach new spring hangers which are preventing the cross member extensions from sitting low enough.

Next time I am down in Bristol with the vehicle I just need to reshape the extensions and all should be good. As an added bonus, Pete, the guy I met at Christian Auto's has offered to do the final seam welding for me as my welding still leaves a lot to be desired.

Thanks again Les speak to you soon no doubt

  5. Is it a crossmember with extensions and is the rear tub still on the vehicle?

    Les.

    HI Les

Hi how you doing, long time no speak, as it were!

Yes it has the extensions and yes the rear tub is off. I thnk that the extensins are part of the problem as they do not have sufficient shape to allow the new cross member to sit at 90 degrees and at the right height.

The cross member I removed was a replacement one that must have only lasted a few years.

  6. HI guys

OK I admit it I have bitten off more than I can chew whilst trying to replace the rear vross member on my series 11a landrover.

I have a new Britpart cross member and I have spent some time, with reasonable success, strengthening it especially in the centre where the recovery point will go.

The problem I have is that the cross member is now tacked in place and it is too high. The vehicle needs to be ready for the National and I am running out of time so can anyone recommend a specialist in the Bristol area that I could go to to get it welded in the correct position.

I hate to gve up but time is of the essence as I still have some other jobs I need to complete before I can get an MOT.

    Thanks in advance

  7. I have an Series 11a landrover and I have just removed an old cross member and I have tacked a new one in place.

I am concerned that my welding is not up to scratch and to ensure that the new cross member is strongly attached and will pass the MOT I need someone who can weld to a high standard.

Does anyone know of a mobile welding service in the Bristol area that works on a Saturday morning as I have to travel down there at the weekend to work on my vehicle.

I know this is asking a lot but you don't get if you don't ask

    Cheers guys
