I have a 73 series 3 left hand drive 2.25 petrol 88.
I live in hawaii.
Aloha all...
I picked it up the other day, the clutch was slipping badly. the clutch only has 250 miles on it. So I figured it was rusty from sitting and would straighten its self out in a mile or 2.
Well it didn't.. I bled it etc.. finally took off the tranny.. found the clutch to be used up completely. The flywheel very rusty and pitted/burned.. and the pressure plate has a grove ground into the spring fingers where the throw out bearing rides.
It has all brand new clutch parts, they look new and the PO gave me receipts showing purchase and installation. the slave cylinder wasn't listed.
It appears the slave was not retracting fully. Could a clutch turn to powder that quickly? 250 miles? they're supposed to last for 120k miles when properly installed.
I've gotten the flywheel resurfaced. ordered a new clutch and slave cylinder.
the pressure plate looks fine save the grooves in the springs which aren't that deep.
I'm going to check part numbers.. make sure that all the parts are correct before throwing it back together.. but.. is there anything else I should look for? The bell housing was all covered with black greasy smut.. but the flywheel wasn't contaminated. tranny nose was dry. Other than the slipping ... thing ran great.
Question 2...
The trans brake and end of the pilot shaft was full of gear oil... which seal do I need to replace?
Seems strange that it came down the shaft into the cup at the end of the pilot shaft AND leaked all over the trans brake (which worked just fine doused in oil) Is it just the "output seal"? and if so, does it just pull out and push in with removal of the trans brake or so?
Thanks..
I can see this forum is full of great advise.
I can't say as I have a whole lot to add.. I do have a good deal of experience off road on different continents, in different hemispheres, climactic zones and terrain... But never as the operator of a land rover. though they were often along with.
Hope I can contribute some day...
thanks
