  1. Hi all. I was rolling around under my 02 TD4 estate last weekend changing diff oil and IRD oil, in preparation for refitting the propshaft. While I was waiting for the last of the oil to leave the IRD, I was trying to figure out what was the best (if any) way of tightening up the gear linkages? I get its a landy thing, and it adds character and the surprise of never really knowing what cog you've selected until the clutch comes out! However, it's not a defender, and if you leave your hand on it, the box makes a 'I'm not happy' noise until you centralise the stick again! The linkage goes seemingly everywhere under the car, with play in all of the ends, but there doesn't seem to be any way of adjustment, just a ball joint. Any ideas welcome! Cheers team James
  2. hi all, sorry for late response. Ive swapped all the brakes now, and no surprises in that it stops now! I have always waited for the glow light to extinguish before starting, new plugs on the list for after crimbo now, until then, found a simple fix... switch to position 2 then wait for light to go out, then off, then back on wait and start. fires up lovely then. However since i last posted, the window regulator curse is back! This time on the tailgate. the wire snapped two days ago, so it fell to the bottom of the door. Its wedged up now with various lengths of old broom handle and about a million zipties.... i'm not bothering re threading a new wire again, as its the most infuriating thing in the world as i found out with the passenger window a few months ago!!! So replacements on order, just needs a clean now.... Stotty
  3. Hi all... Having had a relatively good start to my 1st and long awaited Land Rover ownership, except maybe for a new window mechanism and shattering the the rear glass on a tip run.... It has been an ok couple of thousand miles since April. Even managed a few nice green lanes over the back end of summer. However, with the turn of the seasons, things are starting to play up (and my talent run out!) I went laning a couple of weeks back and managed to completely drop the whole left side in a ditch... Many thanks to the farmer for dragging my red face out, proper tyres please Santa! No damage a such, apart from pulling the exhaust off its hangers, quick fix. Now it would seem the brakes have decided to become instantly rubbish overnight. No gentle deterioration, just rubbish. And now the cold weather is creeping on, it doesn't fire on the button anymore! Instead it thinks about it for a bit before belching out that wonderful smell of diesel!! But alas, it's a Land Rover, it's dirty, its a bit tatty, bit smelly but I wouldn't swap it for the world... Expect maybe for a 110 double can, or a disco 3/4 or a Range Rover, well you get the idea... ?
  4. I think it's on a protective circuit. When I swapped the rear screen on mine after an unfortunate tip run incident.... I noticed while adjusting the glass in the holders, the window would only lower with the door open, not raise, and I imagine the heater is on the same interlock. You can fool it into working by flicking the catch mechanism over on the lock and trying it then. Good luck James

  7. Hi muzzys I've just moved to castle Cary but work at the air station so practically in Yeovil Dailey. Not done the somerton lanes as was not sure which ones were ok, would like to do them tho! Haven't got any tyres yet tho but on my last outing to Wiltshire it got very boggy and rutted and coped fine through there.
  8. Hi all, Having returned from the shop over the weekend I noticed a small wet patch under the engine bay. I had a roll around underneath and traced it back to what looks like an overspill pipe that emerges by the steering rack. It's quite a large bore pipe that is very thin walled, and doesn't look like it's supposed to be attached to anything? I'm guessing it's some sort of drainage pipe from the heating system, similar to what you would expect from the AC system, however I hadn't had the AC on so was just checking to see if anybody had the same thing?!   10. DrRob and chicken drumstick, Thanks for the replies guys. Currently penny pinching for some new at's. As for overall ability, I knew it wasn't the best before I got one, it was more a bargaining chip to get the wife into the green oval.... As she loves it, I can now move into phase two of the plan, sell her scenic and buy either a defender 110 or disco 3... All good things and that... Cheers again guys

  12. Well.... That was an eye opener! Did all the lanes bar the voluntary one. Found the mother of all trees! Found some deep-ish tracks -well for my standard FL with normal tyres fitted! Biggest satisfaction for me was the way the car handled it. It was up to its chassis in some of the tracks, and I thought more than once that it would beach. But it didn't even drag, and the TC light only flickered briefly once which I was surprised at as the are normal road tires bias to mud/snow, But are not blocky tread. And that's it, totally hooked!
  13. SPendrey, Thanks for the info! As for paintwork, I'm not overly fussed but wouldn't wreck it for the sake of it either - but lane scrapes are acceptable ? I'll get back to the map then! Cheers again James
  14. Evening all, Planing on a trip to white sheet hill in Wiltshire soon. I've looked it up on the os maps (not got any fancy gps yet - strictly old school for now!) and online, and various clips on youtube - and closer to when i get chance I'll give them a ring to make sure etc... As far as i can see from the videos, it seems like a gentle easy going lane almost perfect for my first one, and gauging by the videos to be honest you could probably get your average saloon down it. Just wondering if anybody has ever done it before? Much love James
  15. Thanks for the advice. I think I've settled on some ATs as you've mentioned. Looking forward to finding some legal lanes now which is proving difficult in Somerset. Sailsbury Plain is just under an hour down the road though, just got to convince people to go with ?

  17. Friend at work let me try out his Bluetooth plug and play obd2 unit from eBay. I think it was about £10 and the app was free. It displays just about everything on a live feed, and also interrogates ecu fault codes and clears them. Going to get one myself on payday, the interface is really good, it's displayed on gauge readouts on your phones screen that you can configure to your preference. Regards James
  18. Hi all, I've been toying with the idea of getting a second set of wheels for my FL1 and fitting them with more aggressive A/T rubber. I've got standard 16" five spoke alloys with mud/snow bias road tyres at the moment, and I want to start getting into green laning. I appreciate that in theory there is no need for massive mud pluggers, snorkels etc for laning, however the current rubber just doesn't look up to it. My question is, what have people fitted to theirs, and does it require lifting / spacing or other suspension geometry changes? Not too fussed on which type of wheel steel/alloy etc. I am going to keep them as a separate "weekend" set so it drives normal for daily commuting. Cheers team
  19. Quick update..... Since last time I've refitted the props haft, and eventually fixed the passenger window! Shaft went on quite easy, although it was difficult to do on my own due to the weight. took around an hour in total, and a colourful vocabulary... Window was a mare. I went for the replacement cable option first - big mistake I found. The ones I got weren't very exact, and it was a bit of a fiddle trying to get them rigged. After spending ages rigging them, i discovered it was the motor pulley that was also natched so as soon as I operated it the cable jumped and i was back to square 1. I eventually brought the complete replacement including motor, cables, runners and clamps from LR trade parts on ebay. Brilliant service, fitted exactly an worked first time. Having covered a few thousand miles now, not had any real dramas, everything seems to work as it should and on a trip up north I crunched the numbers and with 4 people loaded to the gunnels it achieved 41.2mpg - which i thought was fairly respectable.   20. Thanks Tim. I'll set to on the window then. Thought it sounded too good to be true on eBay! However I see a few people have them as you said. The prop and associated bits are working, was removed purely for mpg as it's previous life was a school bus! I'll look out for the mentioned bits and get that back right.   21. Hi guys n girls, new to the forum and owning a LR! Brought a 02 TD4 GS 5 door last week, and loved every inch of the 254 miles so far! although, in the first week, the front passenger window cable has snapped so the window is wedged up at the mo, so need to source a replacement, and its got the squeaks! some of which is interior trim onto the leather, but the other seams to be related to suspension travel. When I drive over say a speed bump, it squeaks from the front left as the car travels back up to its normal position (strut extending). Is there any common faults regarding ball joints or bushes etc? Its no spring chicken, 115k on the clock... Also it has had the rear prop taken off which i want to refit. i know it saves fuel leaving it off, but i would have brought a diesel lupo if mpg was my priority! Is there any preliminary operations to carry out before i refit it? I wanted my 1st LR to be proper! I've seen some new window iners on ebay, are they ok? Thanks in advance!!
