lotusandy
I have just replaced by somewhat knackered lucas distributor with a new replacement unbranded unit from Paddocks, the existing one had a points gap of 15 thou which ran at 60 degrees dwell, however the new one when set to a gap of 15 thou only runs at a dwell angle of 42 degrees, I have adjusted the gap to 12 thou which corresponds to a dwell angle of 50 degrees. The manual states 15 thou and 60 degrees. Question is how should i set it? gap or angle? does it really matter that much, the engine seems to be running very well on either setting..... Many Thanks Andy

Many Thanks Andy The Dwell angle is more relevant, as this sets the required 'recovery time' for the ignition coil to give a nice fat spark. In reality, as long as you are near enough it will be ok. The more modern Lucas distributors (which your new one will be) should have a dwell of 46 to 56 degrees. If yours is now 50 degrees, then it is fine.
