The reason the timing belt broke was actually down the the fan belt snapping - it got behind the crank pulley and was then forced into the lower part of the timing case where it presumably jammed the timing belt, or caused it to jump a few teeth. The belt had only done 1200 miles since I replaced it - rather expensive bill in the offing for this poor chap.

I bet that took some explaining didn't it Les? trying to enthuse that it wasn't your fault because of the work done previously.

Where the fan belt went in order to trash the timing belt.

You wouldn't think this would happen - I've never come across this before anyway.

An expensive lesson - don't try to get home on the battery if the fan belt has snapped without removing the remains of it :P
