Discovery 300tdi Weird noise!!

Hi

Everyone, i am a newby joiner but i have been using your info for a while! i have a 95 300Tdi auto ES discovery, that developed a strange clanging noise that comes and goes! i thought it was the flexplate as i had a similar experience on an audi 80tdi we had a while ago. it seems to have coincided with the removal of the EGR valve which i did as a result of the thing returning only 17-18mpg!! the noise seems worse when cold, and some times on idle its not there at all until you blip the throttle, i have removed the timing belt cover to see if the noise was a result of loose tensioner or pulley but didnt find anything. the car now seems to run a bit roughly and also is smoking a bit and wont rev nicely too! anyone got any ideas?

Hope you can help me please,. . . . . . . your my only hope!

You won't see it unless you take the gearbox out - the flexplate on 300Tdi engines cracks around the centre where it bolts onto the crankshaft boss, the clanging is made as the crack opens and closes with oscillations in the engine revs. If it is that, once you have it out in front of you it will be immediately obvious! Usually worse at idle and smooths out at higher RPM and after a while it will go bang and the engine probably won't run at all (the torque converter acts as a flywheel on auto models)

Its in bits ready for engine out!

Have come to the conclusion that there is no easy way round it but to remove the engine, check the flex plate and if its not that then strip the engine and then rebuild it with as many new parts as possible!

better than a £500 s/h unknown replacement? the noise has most people baffled including the two landrover specialist that currently have it in there workshop, i am too scared to let them strip it as i am very poor at the mo! oh well the wife will have to drive the corsa for a while longer until we win the lottery!!!

Thanks for all the help so far!!!

Dave
