rimotu66
Hi folks, introductions first I guess, I'm Jon from near Grimsby and have just bought another Disco after a few years without one. Ive had loads of 4x4's over the years including 1971 88"petrol, 1973 88"diesel, series 11 light weight 24volt petrol (later converted to diesel), 1983 88"diesel and 1985 Disco. Ive just bought a 96 tdi Disco with a genuine 78,000 miles, full history and all old mot's in really nice condition inside and out. I'll be using it for travelling to work and shooting . I'm very happy with it and am going to service it as soon as I'm off shift next week. Hope you dont mind a couple of questions on my first thread here. Q1, how do I know if its had the cam belt mod done. Q2, do I really have to fit the full kit if it hasnt been done including the new casing ? Ive rang a couple of local L/R 'specialists' and they both said the new casing isnt needed ,just the updated crank pully ?? I can only assume that it hasnt been done as there is no mention of it in the service book. Cheers, Jon.
disco tony
Firstly, welcome! I would suggest that at 78k its on its original timing belt which would mean the pulley that tracks off. I would get it done as a matter of course, always best to err on the side of caution. If you are getting a specialist to do the job anyway, they should stock the modified pulley. As far as the casing, I've not heard that one before, it dosent track that far off! Dont forget to do all the oils and filters too to keep it in tip top condition. Thanks Tony, I will be fitting a new kit as I do with any car I buy, Ive seen kit1 and kit2 for sale kit1 has belt rollers and a new modified cover £250ish, kit one has everything but the cover £65ish......I'd sooner fit the kit2 obviously and have been told I dont need to fit the cover but if thats correct then why is it even made ?
