jmattley
After getting out the car today I noticed just behind the car that there was a large puddle of oil, assuming it was someone else car I carried. Noticed the steering was then heavy as fook and on closer inspection I can see power steering fluid leaking out the bottom of the steering box. It seems to be coming out where the steering arm arm is and running down it. I have a feeling that a seal or gasket will have suddenly gone. Also, I don't wish to get a new steering box as it's pretty tight and doesn't wander, just leaky, plus students in a recession have little funds for such purchases. Any thoughts? Cheers. Les Henson
You could try putting a capful of DOT4 brake fluid in it (it makes the seal swell up). If it's gushing out, then it won't work. You can buy seal kits, and they can be replaced in situ, but it's a bit hit or miss if it'll cure it as well. It depends why the seal has failed in the first place - rusty shaft or worn bearing will just wreck the new seals. Les.
