Se7enUp
My Christmas present to myself arriver today (a shiny new Nanocom) I plugged it into my 1999 Defender and switched on the ignition. The Nanocom sprung into life and worked a treat. I can read/clear faults and all the output features (firing the injectors) work OK. However, as soon as I start the engine I constantly get a "Cannot initialise the communication with the ECU message". I've tried switching the Nanocom to "instrument" mode but as soon as the engine is started I get the above message. I'm new to Nanocoms so I'm not sure if I'm doing anything obviously wrong. I've even tried reading the manual
Se7enUp
Forgot to add - ECU is the early type (non-flashable), lightly tickled by Porny
steve_d
I've even tried reading the manual Now there's a desperate man. Steve
101sean
The FAQs on the website are actually quite helpfull. There is an issue with earthing on the ECU that can cause this. http://web.nanocom.it/faq_i.cfm I also had this continually until I uploaded the latest firmware on to the Nanocom, works fine now. Last update was May, Firmware 2.05, what version shows up when you start your Nanocom?
Se7enUp
Thanks Sean! This page seems to describe exactly what I'm seeing. It's a pity they don't mention that in the manual (yes i was desperate ) I'll try cleaning up the ECU earth tomorrow and see if it resolved the problem. Se7enUp
I've cleaned the earth terminal and the Nanocom now works with the negine running. however, i'm getting "Bad data recieved" messages and the unit resets when I increase the revs. I'm going to recable the earth for the ECU and the OBD plug this weekend and see if that makes a difference. Se7enUp
All sorted Problem was a Landrover favourite.....an earthing problem For anyone else who gets this problem (as pointed out, it's mentioned on Nanocoms website so is pretty common), this is how I resolved it. I decided to eliminate the potential difference completely (ECU sees one voltage, Nanocom sees another) by adding a fresh earth. This connects the ECU via the earth post under the drivers seat, the ECU casing, between pins 4 and 5 of the OBD plug (wires for pins 4 and 5 have now been joined together) and the battery earth. Problem solved and the Nanocom is happily now doing it's stuff. The new earth has made a big difference as the Nanocom now reports the battery voltage a full 1v higher than it did before. And I'm happy to report no faults have been logged since Sept last year when Porny breathed on it
