Ignition failure

Hi sorry to just join and post

I have recently become the keeper of a 99(T) discovery2 TD5 Auto gear box and have had a couple of things to do on it

Recently I get no ignition but battery is fine (its almost like trying to start with the gear not being in P)

When you open the car get in key in ignition all you get is a click and nothing else, I have found that if i take key out lock/unlock and try again (have to do more than once at times) and change gear shift to D then back that it then starts

This happened the other month for a couple of days then was fine and yesterday started again

I also have seen if I try to much of the above then when it starts I get a warning on the electronic gear box (Manual and sports lights flashing together) which if i turn off take key out and then restart goes away

Is it a problem with the key (i only have one)

Or the alarm dis-abler not recognising the key

Any advice would be appreciated

Ian

Does it only happen when the car is already open? If so, and if it is OK when you unlock the car, then I would suspect the passive immobilisation isn't working properly. The red immob light should stay on when it is playing up?

The S&M lights are probably just electronic confusion if you are messing with things a lot. A visit to a diagnostic computer will be able to check the passive operation and also whether there are any fault codes in the autobox ECU.
