hobson
I have a standard 20l metal jerrycan and want to mount it on the roofrack, but would like to have it lying flat on its side, i've had a look for a holder like this but can't find one, so am planning on making one. i've got a few reasonable ideas how to do it, but thought i'd see if anyone on here has got any better ideas, i'm sure i'm not the first to make one! i have a pretty well equipped workshop, loads of sheet steel and ally and a great ironmongers close by for any specialist fittings (threaded bar/hinges etc) but i don't have a welder, so will be using normal fixings (bolts/rivets)to hold it all together. So has anyone got any good ideas or designs for a jerrycan holder, that preferably lies on it's side? -pictures/sketches would be greatly appreciated and helpful thanks
mike4444244
are you sure you want it on its side? they have a habit of leaking! just copy whats in the comics Mike
hobson
I didn't think leaking would be a problem, i've looked at the mags and most of them have the can on it's spine, and if it's a full can then i'd think theres just as much chance of leaking mounted that way as leaking on it's side. it's a new can so the seal should be ok for a while... ejparrott
Rubber... Make sure you put a good thick rubber strip on all the contact surfaces, the ones it rests on and the ones that clamp it. VWP have some closed cell stuff thats 6mm thick that would be good. Doing this will stop it sliding around, will prevent the vibration that creates even more noise in the landy, and will prevent it wearing through and creating holes over time. My cans dont leak, but i would always store them on their side opposite the filler, with the filler up, then if it did leak, I'd only loose 2 or 3" of diesel.
