Sankey 3/4 Mk3 Tie down shackle removal

Hi All,

I have just bought a Sankey Mk3 Widetrack (Drum Brakes), and want to take off the tub for spraying. I know that I have to remove 6 small bolts between the chassis and the tub along with the tie down shackles.

I have a Narrow track manual, but the tie down shackles are different design to my trailer. How do I remove the shackles? There seems to be a single pin through the bottom of the shackle (possible hollow through one side), but it does not want to be tapped through (pin hammer). Any help / advice would be much appreciated.

I've got the same problem. My way of tackling it (when it gets warmer) was to grind off the roll pins with a Dremel, knock the shackles out, then when replacing them, use a pin similar to the ones securing the tailgate.

Hi Nige,

Geat minds think alike :) I was just thinking of doing that I found a variety of locking pins on Ebay - I just need to take one off and measure the pin diameter and length. I will let you know the measurements in a few days.

I think this may the best option as they will be easy to remove in the future.

Hi Nige / All,

Some progress made :-) Canmec (Ebay Store) are selling the pins with rings. If you contact Nick he will sell you the pins only. (Search Ebay for this listing number 360205094075).

I spent the whole afternoon attempting to get the original pins out. Managed to get 2 rings out and two 'moving' - its hard work! I'll try again tomorrow. I tried the dremmel but broke a couple of discs and reverted back to brute force and ignorance.

Not looking forward to doing the rear, even less space to work, hammer, bash :)

3rd afternoon on the Widetrack stripdown. All Load rings removed, just 6 small bolts to go to get the tub off - tomorrow! Yipeeeee!!!

I left the rear side rings til last as they are the most inaccesible. I had problems removing all 4 of the others, but these were the easiest to tap through.

3x Rings were removed by hitting the pins though with a hanner & punch. Make sure that whatever is used as a punch has the correct diameter (the pins are spring pins), if the punch diameter is too small, they can deform and wedge themselves in tight.

1 Ring would not budge at all and I had to take a dremel to either end of the pin (Do this as a last resort as you can not get close enough to the to the ring shaft leaving a few mil to grind down carefully at either end (Very time consuming).

The 2 remaining rings would punch through flush with the ring shaft but took a lot of hammering which damaged the pin ends so would go no further - I therefore had to dremel the other end off pullingthe ring through with a claw hammer.

In summary if you do this yourself - expect the job much longer than anticipated - but there again, you could strike lucky and all your pins may pop straight out as easily as my rear one's, leaving you to wonder what this idiot newbie is rabbiting on about :)
