renault4
I'v done a search but not come up with anything conclusive so can you help? Just recently and only very occasionally, when starting my 1991 defender 90 200 Tdi, the starter has just "wurred" 2nd. or 3rd time it has started as it should. Now some sugestions are that the bendix needs cleaning as it get clogged up with sh*t others say the starter motor has a solonoid not a bendix I am confused, if it has a solonoid, does it still get clogged? is this my problem? If it is , do I have to remove the starter it to clean it?

If it "wurrs" a few times but then eventually catches it means that the starter dog is not always engaging with the ring on the flywheel, but the electrical side is OK. My guess is that the starter dog is sticking a bit. There are concise instructions for overhaul and adjustment on page 32 (section 86 of book 5) of the Defender workshop manual (have a look in the Tech Archive)
LandyLee
I see you are also in South wales , I have a spare starter if you need it to check anything , or if you need parts off it . It has a damaged casing so could not be sold on
