Discovery 1 Ignition Barrel/Steering Lock

Hi

The ignition barrel on our Discovery has failed and I have sourced a replacement part, can anyone offer any advice on how to remove the faulty item?

I am particularly referring to how to remove the "snap off" bolts that attach the barrel to the steering column.

Many thanks

Firstly remove the steering wheel, it makes access easier.

Remove the plastic cowling from around the column

Then with a sharp pointed punch and a hammer tap the top of the dome around to undo the bolts.

Once they begin to move they are generally finger tight and can be removed fairly easily.

remove the lock, unplug the wiring and refit the new part.

Part number STC1435 is the required part.

Hi, For the record, I have just replaced my Steering Lock and the "tap with a sharp punch" routine didn't work for me. The bolts were very tight and access is still not that good after stripping the column as instructed. I discovered that it was a simple job to hacksaw (junior) through the casting lugs parallel with the bolts and the exposed bolt was easy to tap round using the exposed flange on the bolt which had a useful flat spot where I had hacksawed through. Access was much better. Cheers!
