666dawn
ok people start from cold, engine fires up first time but a plume of blue smoke emits from the exhaust for a couple of seconds then clears.. ive been told leaking injectors any other ideas what about changing the glow plugs could one or two be damaged, and is it easy enough job for me to change the glow plugs or is it a garage job.... EggNChips
You don't say what engine it is, so I'm guessing it's a TD4. Blue smoke is oil, if it's only on start up then it's likely to be valve guide seals. If it's a leaking injector, it would be white/grey smke that smells like a BBQ. 666dawn
thanks for that it is a td4 so i take it i need to take to the garage
EggNChips
Depends how bad it is and whether you can live with it. Slightly leaking valve guide seals and / or leaking injector will not in itself cause further damage (as long as you keep an eye on oil levels). Causes a bit of smoke at start up, but that's it. EggNChips
p.s. the glow plugs will not really make any difference to a TD4 in this weather.

EggNChips
Another though would be the crankcase filter. Is it definitely blue smoke and not white/grey?
FridgeFreezer
I was about to suggest crank filter or a dodgy EGR as other sources of oil/crud in the intake. TD4's are pretty solid so it's surprising if it's a genuine mechanical fault, and I'd want to rule out as much easy/cheap stuff as possible before tearing the engine apart. I find if mine gets lazy in winter or with other faults (poor glow plugs, failing fuel pump, etc.) and takes more than a quick crank to start it will cough a big cloud of smoke out of the back but then run fine. stebbo47
Would agree about crankcase filter, similar problem with my TD4 but with blue smoke after any length of idling as well.Changed filter and no more blue smoke. The filter was rock hard and appeared to not have been changed for years if ever!
