  1. Cheers for the quick answers.

    Western,

Are you saying that it is OK for me to simply attached a NATO hook on the centre of the front bumper with a spreader plate?

And presumably the spreader plate is simply a length of 10mm plate inside the bumper.

We plan to move mostly ground power units on flat paved surfaces, but it may also get the odd learjet to shift too :D

  2. I am looking for a Defender for work, to be used on an airfield to pull equipment around.

We need it to be able to move around 2.8 tons, which is no problem on the rear towbar however, we would want to put a towing eye on the front too, to allow us to nose into areas an pull the equipment out.

So how can you fit a tow eye to the front of a Defender and how strong will it be?

  3. camera? video camera of them doing the evil deed?

Makes no blind bit of difference. I once watched as a gang of youths raided the lock-up across from my mum's house. I was on my own at the time and there was IIRC 3 maybe 4 of them, so getting involved was not the best action.

However, I had my SLR camera and zoom lens. I was able to take some fairly decent photographs of the offenders breaking the door down and then carrying away some "loot".

Phoned the Police and told them what happened, when the Police arrived they said "thank you very much but the pictures are useless without date stamp and even then probably not admissable in court"

On a seperate occassion, my late father became away of a group (I dont want to you the word gang!) of "youths" running through the garden and generally causing damage to plants and shrubs in the garden. He sneeked off out the back door and caught one as they tried to trample the plants again - he did no more than grab the kid to get his attention and held him until my Mum called the Police. When the Police arrived, they spoke to everyone involved - the group of probably 5 and my mum and dad and decided that the balance of opinion was that my dad started it and he should be charged with assault.

To put it in context, to this day there is not one single window to the front of my mums house that does not have chip marks where stones have been thrown at them!

For once common sense provailed and although he got a talking to from the Police they decided not to charge my dad.

  4. You can use either of these

NTC4260 from VIN ca to ha610293

    NTC9922 from ja610294 to ka638682

    ANR1799 from ka638683

all are used on defenders of various vin's.

    Thanks Western

My Defender is LA936228 and the RRC is GA- Summit (- I think).

So it should be OK to use the one I have.

I had a look on Paddocks web-site, they only list ANR1799 for all defenders/RRC and Disco so I assumed they must be interchangable.

  5. Could a kind soul with Microcat please do me a favour and check a part number for me.

With Niall's help, we have narrowed down my RRC's poor handling to the A-frame ball joint.

I happen to have a brand new ball joint in the garage for my Defender 90 and need to check if the parts are interchangable.

For some reason I cannot get my copy of Microcat to work.

    Thanks.

  6. Greg,

Your have listed most of the possibles, but have left out panhard rod bushes. Faulty panhard bushes can be difficult to check properly while in place (they can look OK).

    Cheers Guys,

The Panhard bush was changed when the polybushes were done - 6 weeks ago (ish). I assume the trailing arm bushes would have been done at the same time ... I will check the kit.

I will check everything at the weekend and report back.

  7. The never ending saga of my RRC continues!

The new tyres have dramatically helped the handling and steering, however, there is still a bit of wander.

It does not happen when under power, only noticable when cruising at 50mph+, there is also a noticable vibration through the steering when you go over a bump. the best way to describe it is feeling loose - it corners fine, but on straights it wanders and I find that I am always correcting it one way then t'other.

My thinking is that it is one of three things - or a combination of all three...

    1. Swivel pre-tension needs adjusting

    2. Steering damper needs replacing

    3. Tracking is out.

Am I thinking along the right lines? What else have I missed? It has had new tyres, polybushes all round, new shocks.

    Greg

  8. sounds like:

fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump

try putting a pressure gauge in the fuel line and see what the pressure is doing.

Mines has started playing up again and as far as I can see it must be a fueling problem, this time mine is only rough on gas. Flick it back to Petrol and it runs fine.

It starts from cold and runs fine, but when it get between warm and hot it begins to falter and eventually stalls - I am not sure if it is connected or not but the last 3 times it has stalled it has been in reverse!

  9. Hi Orange,

thanks for your reply, I've cleaned and lubricated all moving parts of the throttle assembly, all the vacuum pipework and pretty much everything else I thought might make a difference. Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be that simple :(

    Cheers,

    Chris

    Chrispy.

As you know mines was doing the same, have you checked the timing? alternatively get it on a Krypton tuner and get them to check the spark.

Mines was cured by a new dizzy.

    Greg

  10. Did you re-bush the back end? What about the A-frame & ball joint?

Is the suspension lifted? If so castor correciton may be needed.

    Have you checked swivel preload?

    That's me out of ideas!

    Bish ,

The A-Frame ball joint was not changed. But all other bushes were replaced.

It does not have a lift, but is on HD springs.

Not checked the swivel pre-loads, but I plan to have a good look at the swivels and bearings at the weekend.

  11. You hand/eye co-ordination?

    :P

    damn Cheek!!

I had it in today getting the LPG certified and tuned, even the guy from the tunign company said it was scary to drive!! But couldnt shed any light onto a cause!

It has been a bit dodgy since I last took it off-road.... wonder if I could have bent the track rod?

    Looks like Saturday's job!

  12. OK so the bad handling of the 1991 RRC is back!

It wanders all over the road and is very uncomfortable to drive- with constant adjustment needed to keep it in a straight line!

Recently, it has had - replacement PAS box, new shocks, Polybushed all round. Tyres pressures are fine and the tyres have been swapped round, so I dont think it is a tyre issue.

Tracking has been suggested and I will get that check out today.

Any thing else I should check?

  13. [Threadjack]

I've got headlights with a sidelight bulb option - can I get hold of LED bulbs for these?

    Yes not a problem.

Make sure you get a diffused or wide angle LED as the "standard" LEDs tend to be a little too directional to provide a nice pattern in the lamp.

I can also highly recommend UltraLEDS, I have used them a few times and have no complaints, one batch of LEDs blew within 2 weeks of use, Robert (the guy that runs Ultraleds) replaced them with an upgrade and after investigating, found it to be a dodgy batch from the manufacturer.

No link with Ultraleds, other than a satisfied punter.

  14. I am treating "Mean Green" to a bit of a spruce up, at the moment the engine is out to let me replace the clutch. Since the clutch is out I have been able to have a poke around the bulkhead and it showing signs of rust - not too bad at the moment, but feels spongy in place. So I am thinking, since the engine is already out now would be a good time to replace the bulkhead.

So, simple question - where is the best place to buy a new bulkhead?

While I am on the subject, i will probably change the doors too - any suggestions on suppliers of these? (other than the usual Cr(P)addocks suspects)

  15. I think they will rub on standard rims too.

If you look behind the rear door (I'm assuming you have a 4 door  ) there is a return lip on the wheel arch that is really good at slicing chunks off your nice new 235 x 85's (ask me how I know  ). You will probably have to fold this flat with a pair of mole grips or similar for a fair way up the wheel arch.

Other than that, they'll probably rub on full stuff on the inner wheel arch.

    Good luck!

Hmmm ... might need to think about a body lift then. I think I would rather go down that route rather than buy a new set of tyres.

  16. Well the title says it all really, I had a bit of a hairy moment today when the Rangie started to slide on a damp roundabout and have decided I urgently need to change the tyres.

I have a set of 235/85 Trac Edge on my Defender and the quickest and easiest option would be to swap them over to the RRC.

I have fitted one and jacked up each corner to check articulation and with a little adjustment to the front wing everything else looks ok - will it be ok?

The RR has HD spings, but is otherwise standard.

  17. Well it is now by far improved.....

But then again it should be .... I have just re-bushed it with poly's and new shocks and it is far better.

Turns out the really dodgy handling was coming from the Panhard rod bush, the PAS box had been leaking on to it and the PAS fluid had corroded the bush.

I would still say it is not perfect, but it is acceptable.

I also changed the PAS box - albeit not for a new one and also one of the steering UJ's.

There was a very little play in on of the rear bearings, so I think 4 new bearing will also be on the to do list. As usual it all boils down to time! (and money:( )

  18. Hello All.

The ABS on my RRC is playing up .... big style!!! (nearly ended up running into oncoming traffic!)

As long as I have had the RR (almost 5 months) the ABS light has been more on than off, I reset the codes and it was fine for about a week then light was back on. (at all time it has braked perfectly)

Last night, I started up drove off and noticed no ABS light - good thinks I must have cleared - got the first T junction pressed brakes and brakes started clattering and pedal vibrating as tho it was in a skid .. and brakes were released, had to jump on the brakes to slow down and was just reaching for the handbrake when it came to a halt - just on the Stop line.

After about 5 mins driving, ABS light came on and everything was fine again.

Just been out in the car again and exactly the same has happened, poor braking action with vibrations and clatter.

    Any ideas?

And if it does turn out to be a big problem, or until I can get it fixed, is there a way to disconnect the ABS and just run normal brakes.
