  1. Can anyone help me with a quick question.

My 90 has been parked up for a few months on SORN but I am going to put it back on the road. It is already insured but is SORN and the MOT has expired.

I know that as long as it is booked into an MOT centre and you drive directly to the MOT shop you are OK in the eyes of the plod. But does the MOT need to be booked for that day?

ie MOT place can book me in for 1st thing Monday morning, but I have no way to get it to them, but as I know the owner of the place I can take it to him on Sunday night and leave it with him.

So ... yes it will be driven directly to the test centre and will not move until tested but the test will not be on the same day. Am I OK or will PC plod have an issue?

(MOT tester seems to think it is fine but I just want to make sure)

  2. The biggest issue is the rear diff pan has rusted through. The syncromesh between 1st & 2nd gear is also badly worn and crunches unless you are careful and deliberate but other than that it drives brilliantly so could do with gearbox change. There is also a noise on the overrun which may or may not be related to the other 2 issues. I have a replacement gearbox ready to go in and will include it if anyone on here is interested.

The final problem is the fuel sender is faulty and does not give a reading on the gauge - again I have a good 2nd hand unit to go in.

Other than that it is better than a lot of Discoveries its age (1993) - it will never win any concurs prizes but it is straight and decent condition, with a solid boot floor, sills and chassis.

  3. It is just attractive to have someone come and collect it - taking it to a scrappie is all very well but it really needs trailer'd and that is just an additional hassle that I dont need to do at the moment.

I will certainly offer it here before it goes as it really is a good Discovery and I would like to see it live on (I bought it as the previous owner no longer needed it but didnt want to scrap it as it was too good). It just needs a couple of time consuming drivetrain niggles sorted out to get it back on the road - it is already MOT'd until either Dec or Jan and is solid on all the usual rot spots.

But my Defender also needs some work done and if it comes down to a choice the 90 wins every time :)

  4. I have just had what I think is a reasonable quote from cartakeback.com for my Discovery.

Does anyone have any experience of them - are they likely to turn up and half the offer because it has a dead fly on the bumper?

There is not a lot wrong with the Disco and only needs time and a very little money to fix but I just dont have the time to do it or the space to park it up until I do have time - so it needs to go.

  5. I will take it for a drive tomorrow without the prop and see what happens. But to add to the issues, it looks like the rear diff pan has rusted through - I topped it up and there is now a puddle of EP90 under the diff and it appears to be coming from the diff pan rather than the filler or drain. I think when I jacked it up to spin the wheel bearings the first time the trolley jack on the underside of the diff has been enough to burst through the weak metal.

The joys of Land Rovers :(

  6. Ok.. finally had a chance to have a look at the Discovery.

I have removed the front prop and both UJ are in good conditon and are moving freely. There is no lateral movement on the diff that I can feel - how can I tell if it is anything to do with the pinion shaft / bearing? Does that involve a strip down of the diff?

  7. Had exactly this issue on my 90 many years ago - turned out the front diff drive flange locknut had eaten its split pin and was gradually unwinding itself, allowing the pinion shaft to loosen-off its bearings and make 'orrible noises.

I have not had a chance to look at it yet - but if it is the pinion shaft does that mean a new diff?

Also can someone just confirm that my method of checking everything is correct ...

    1. Jack up, remove wheels and put on axle stands

    2. remove props (Diff end only or completely? )

    3. spin diffs - there should be little or no movement other than spinning and no noise

    4. Anything else?

    5. Put back together

    Thanks

  8. So, I have been looking forward for weeks to my 1st offroad run in months and the 1st trip for the "new" Discovery 1.

Spent the day yesterday giving it the once over, gave it a service and checked all the levels. Got up nice and early this morning, filled the flask, made a lunch and headed off.

20mins into the 90min journey, I am cruising happily at 70mph on the motorway and thinking how well the Disco drives, considering it is 20 years old and almost 200k miles. I am getting ready to stop for my planned fuel stop and as I lift off the throttle there is a little bit of a shudder through the car and a rattly grating sound - kinda like a wheel bearing but more metal on metal.

So I pull into an empty supermarket car park and have a look round - nothing to be seen and no hot wheel from wheel bearings etc. I drive around the car park making tight circles to check diffs but there is nothing to feel or hear. I decide not to risk heading further away from home and nurse it home on quieter roads.

The car drives fine in all gears and pulls well - but the terrible grinding comes back as soon as you lift off and on the over run. I head back and try all scenarios that I can think of to determine when the noise is present. And in general is seems to be coming off load.

I stop at a mates on the way back and we jack it up, but all wheels spin normally and there are no noises or excessive play - there is a tiny little play on the front pass side wheel bearing but I do not think it is enough to be the problem. We both go for a spin round the block and the noise comes back as expected on the overrun. We have a good listen but cant really decide if it is front or rear. No noticable play in the props etc etc

    So ... any ideas?

I should say there is already a question mark over the gearbox as I think the synchromesh between 1st and 2nd is badly worn as you need to be careful and deliberate with the changes to avoid a crunch. And I have a replacement gearbox ready to swap, but I want to know if this is something else.

  9. Can someone identify what the white/purple wire coming from my fuel sender does?

    I have 4 wires - 2 x black, 1 x Black/Green and 1 x White/Purple

The Haynes manual refers to the Black/green but not too the White?

The "new" sender that I removed from another 200tdi Discovery seems to be a newer type with a 2 pin econoseal connector rather than a 3 pin round connector. How can I make the new sender work?

  10. Can anyone tell me the difference between the 3 lamp lenses in the photograph.

I was gifted 3 sets of Cibie Oscar lamps a few years ago - all in decent condition and have only now have something to fit them too. When I took the covers off they have 3 different lenses.

So what are they? and which should I fit to my Discovery? (plan is additional driving lamps wired with main beam)

  11. Hi

The fuel gaage in my 200tdi has been reading zero since I got the car and the previous owner suspected the fuel sender. No problem, I have a sender that I saved from the other 200tdi that I recently scrapped.

Have just dismantled the rear and found the one fitted has a round 3 pin plug plus an earth, while the "new" sender has a square econoseal type 2 pin plug.

    Can I convert the wiring?

  12. Try Adrian Flux - they have both a young driver and 4x4 dept so might be more helpful. Also for that age of vehicle it can come under a classic policy - not sure how your age will affect it.

Also try http://www.cherishedcarinsurance.co.uk/ they manage a quote significantly lower than anyone else when I was doing my Discovery - but then again I am more than twice your age with a clean driving history so that will help a bit!

£3400 isn't bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy $h!t!!! I consider £340 to be too much.... guess I am really out of touch with reality! sign of getting old!

  13. Title says it all really. A few years ago I had a Discovery with a rear pull out load bay cover, when I sold the car I put it "in storage" in the garage. I now have another D1 but the cover does not retract. It is as if the spring has lost its tension while in storage.

    Any suggestions?

  14. Does anyone have any knowledge of vinyl wraps / decals?

I am finishing off my Discovery and have added some decals, however the leading edge of the section on the bottom of the door is lifting very slightly and seems to have lost its adhesion.

Is there any glue that I can us to stick down the vinyl? I assume something like superglue could melt the decals?

    Thanks

  15. I have a wet drivers seat in my D1, I have already sealed up the gutters as they were badly cracked and have now turned my attention to the windscreen, the windscreen seal looks badly perished so probably needs replaced anyway.

There is also a small chip in the screen (been there for years) so if I am going to the bother of changing the seal I might consider changing the screen too.

I have access to a RRC with a heated screen that is going to be broken -so will the RRC heated screen fit the 200 Disco?

  16. I have used Flash tape, I got from Screwfix, and I have to say it makes a big difference when it comes to panel drumming but it needs something a little more open to absorb the sound. I have sandwiched about 1 inch thick neoprene type foam (it is not specifically a noise absorber, just stuff I had in the garage) between the roof and the ribs and have a piece of plywood screwed into the roof ribs and then the roof lining attached to it. I think it has made a difference - but as I have only done the front cab it is hard to say how much noise is coming from the rear.

  17. Yeah I would say a bit too much - I would agree around the £600 mark the maximum.

As a comparison I know of a very tidy 1996 300tdi, with at a guess around 150k miles on it for £700. Again no tow bar and I know there has not been one fitted for at least 10 years, so I doubt it will ever have had on.
