  1. also noticed, if you turn the ignition on and off a couple of times before starting and get the fuel pump to runs it priming cycle a couple of time it will make a bang when you first crank it but thats the only time it seems to do it. dont know if that helps at all.
  2. Right tried turning it over again. This time as its turning over it coughs and the rpm drops as though something has forced it to slow down if that makes sense, then it picks back up and does it again. Does that a few time then just carries on turning over normally. Obvs dont wanna turn it over to much incase i screw the starter. lol.
  3. ok, it goes pipe out of tank --> in line filter --> external pump (only has power and earth terminals) --> pressure regulator --> fuel rail dont think plugs are wet, took one out to check i still had a spark and it seems that i do. when the plugs out at least. lol.
  4. yer fuel pump is def right way round. fuel is going from high pressure pump thru a pressure regulator if that makes a difference.
  5. everynow and again some glimmer of a cough or bit of a bang but most of the time sod all. lol
  6. ok, so now i have a spark, the fuel pump is whining away sending fuel, ive checked the leads go to the right plugs, the wires are the correct way round for the coils and the sensor is 5 teeth behind the gap. Any suggestions? or screen shots etc that would be helpfull?
  7. EDIS that i ordered off of fleabay just arrived and we have a spark!!!!!!! now just gotta see if the engine runs :s probably be back in in 5 mins trying to work out why it wont start now it has a spark but there we go.
  8. yup, goes to pin 7 :S Cable and plug all new and seems to be making a good connection though will double check. would be good if that is it
  9. Got VE Table 1 And found 2 tables called Spark table 1 so heres both.
  10. shield isnt connected to anything sensor end, other end shield is connected to a short length of wire into the edis
  11. Nige - will do that tomoz morning asap. tuner studio recognises that there is firmware on there (dont know if thats relevant). Not that im doubting your knowledge at all, i just want to learn, but i was under the impression that the edis unit could create a spark without the ms ecu connected or have i mis-read something / got confused somewhere along the line. Reckless - will double check the plug, found in my searching that someone had had a problem with the plug so checked mine and seems to be ok but will double check. Cynic - the cable is indeed shielded. Could be a faulty starter, cable from battery to starter is brand new and something like 10mm maybe 12mm thick so reckon that its not the cable earth to chassis from battery is same stuff. The engine itself has a regular rpm and once the initial spike picked up by tuner studio the rpm stays pretty much the same the numbers dart around between 170 and 200 to quick to read them properly really. All - what do i have to do to generate the rpm graph in tuner studio? got the guage home page bit
  12. ok well dont no if this will help but here is screen shot of cranking without disco. Here is data log from trigger logger if that helps anyone. How do i generate the rpm / time graph? Thanks for all the help so far! greatly appreciated!!
  13. ok so this is with battery and disco jumping for extra oomph and the thing is turning over pretty quick. VR sesor round other way no rpm signal at all. still no spark
  14. so the initial rpm reading is that just interferance and thats why it disappears or does the pully create a small charge which it picks up but which is then filtered out as noise?
  15. so the engine isnt cranking fast enough to start the edis? cause for this? battery to small?
  16. No is the short answer to that. Right, pic 1 is what tuner studion shows when ignition on. Pic 2 is what it shows in the first couple of seconds cranking with no VR sensor attached. Pic 3 is what happens after a few seconds of cranking and the screen stays like this, again no VR sensor. Pic 4 - first couple of seconds cranking vr sensor attached Pic 5 - after a few seconds of cranking screen stays like this, again sensor attached Pic 6 - screen always like this from start of cranking with VR sensor wires round the other way. Any suggestions........
  17. Right, new battery in. Getting 12 volts to coils, and edis when ign on. when Cranking edis gets around 11V and coils about 10.5 ( so above 9V). vr sensor gives an eratic reading up to around 0.5V when cranking with the multimeter leads attached to both wires. Resistance of the VR sensor when disconnected is 379. Does this sound about right? Still no spark so hoping it indicates a problem with something..... Thanks for all your help so far.
  18. ok. well trigger wheel is def steel, Car is a 90, i havnt been swaping the wires at either end (using the choc block method). Ill do a screen grab later and post it up. Yes the fuel pump does prime. Ordered another EDIS of ebay (can always sell if turns out not to be that) but thats for the offer Ill try another battery. The one thats in the car literally will not hold charge at all so maybe its that thats screwing the whole thing up! Will double check all my wires again and try and get another battery from somewhere.
  19. will check it for the millionth time...you never know. :S that looks like what i have tho. ideally need it running by the end of the week so might order another sensor and edis just so i can rule them out. always stick the edis back on fleabay at a later date. :S Unless anyone can think up anything else. :S
  20. Firmware version is MS1 / extra rev 029v. As for wiring diagrams etc was bought from you oct 2012. Thanks
  21. Right, Sorry if this is seems like im flogging a dead horse but im stumped and have run out of ideas. As the title suggests i am not getting a spark. Engine is a 4.6 rover v8 I have spent the last 2 days searching and trying different things and now im stumped. I have tried running lives from battery straight to coils and straight to EDIS and earthing EDIS straight to battery to try and elimiate any problems with the m/s relay board. Ive disconected the ms ecu and most importantly ive switched the VR sensor wires around more times than i care to mention. From my reasearch it seems that as long as the Edis has +ive, earth and a vr signal it will work. The wires coming back from the coils to the Edis module are getting power from presumably the coils no voltage at plug end when attacehed to Edis but power when attached to coils. (presume this is right). So im left thinking, 2 dodgy coil packs, dodgy vr sensor, (Brand new fuel parts one), dodgy edis or dodgy spark plugs and leads. :S Any suggestions would be welcome! Finally rpm occasional registed (135rpm) for couple of seconds in tuner studion occasionally so think this is just interference. Oh and my battery is knackered so having to do all this while jumping the car, so dont no if thats the cause but seems unlikely else you'd never be able to jump the car. Thanks for any help!!
  22. Ok cheers guys. I was thinking of fitting the manifolds from a 4l disco but if 3.9 will do then ill see what the local breaker has. and yer think ill use defender brackets off the engine and then fabricate up the mount to the chassis.
  23. Hi Guys. Got a couple of questions for you. Im currently trying put a 4.6 V8 from a P38 into my defender. First questions is can i use defender engine mounts (incl. the brackets which bolt to the engine) instead of fabricating ones from scratch? Second question / problem is that the enxhaust manifolds foul on the bulkhead slightly on the drivers side and is tight on the passengers, however on the passengers side the end of the manifold finishes just above the chassis rail. Just wondering how people have overcome this in the past or has something gone wrong? Can i use the manifold from a V8 originally in a defender or will it restrict the engine to much? Bit more info which might help. Engine is mated to a disco V8 R380 and the bulkhead is the older 200tdi style. Any help greatly appreciated and desperatly needed. Cheers
