  1. Hi All,

At my last P&P day, the scrutineer suggested putting a second lightweight spring on the throttle of my 200tdi, so that if the main spring failed the throttle would still close when you took your foot off the pedal.

Doers anyone have pics of how they have done it or suggestions on where to get a suitable spring?

    Cheers

  2. Hi All,

I'm sorry if this has been done to death, but I'm struggling to find a thread with a simple enough reply to satify my small brain!

Got a defender 90 pickup that is used to commute (20 miles per day, all on motorway) and to off road (pay and play/laning). The tyres on it need changing really as they have quite a lot of cracking etc.

I'd like to go BFG MT, but I'm not rich enough for that so I'm planning to go Insa Dakar - what are peoples thoughts on these?

Now onto sizing, the truck has 225 on it now but I quite fancy 265/75/16s (fills the gaps well), but how are these in mud, are thinner or thicker tyres better?

  3. Right, so the problem definitely was the fuel stop solenoid.

I bought a new one but it doesn't fit quite right.

Fully tightened, the plunger cannot move enough to allow any fuel to pass - the engine does not start.

Loosened of a couple of turns, the engine starts and stops ok, but doesn't allow enough fuel to flow to rev properly.

Loosened another couple of turns, the engine starts, stops and runs properly, but diesel leaks from around the solenoid.

    BUGGER!!!!

Can I fix this by putting PTFE tape around the threads or am I cocking something up here?

  4. I'd first make sure that the solenoid doesn't actually have 12v on it when you're expecting it to stop.

The simplest test would be to pull the wire off.

And if working correctly, the engine should cut out?

(That's madness, if that wire came off whilst at 70mph on the worwar the engine would just stop - that's a bad day!)

Cheers, I'll try that - although I checked with a multimeter that I have 12v with ignition on and 0v with it off - guess it's the same thing.

  5. Hi All,

At idle, the whole wagon vibrates and rattles (like most old diesels I guess), but if I depress the accelerator even a mm or so, it smoothes out nicely, so I'm thinking of increasing the idle spped slightly.

Is there anything I need to know or worry about before I do this?

  6. Check the loom to the rear, it runs through the chassis and can chafe & short. 7-core trailer cable run outside the chassis is an easy solution for replacement.

    Thanks Fridge.

If I put a multi-meter across the 2 wires from the brake light switch and turn on the ignition, what should I see:

    Volts

    Amps

    Ohms

Or am I off track and should be trying to find the problem elsewhere? I agree it's a chaffed wire giving a short to earth, but have no idea how to identify where this is.

  7. Hello!

I'm sure you'll find everyone really helpful & knowledgable round 'ere. People even reply to my random questions!!

Tis a very tidy truck - got any big plans or just going to get out & use it?

    Thanks all.

I must say, the pics make her look better than maybe she is, although I do think she's pretty tidy. Bought her off a farmer that had done all the work on her with plans on keeping her then things changed and he sold her, so I'm confident she's in pretty good shape, although she was sat in a barn unused for a year.

She has a couple of niggles that need sorting, but basically I have no big plans yet, just going to get out and use her a bit.

My girlfriend wants a snorkel (just cos she thinks they look cool), so that will happen shortly.

    Thanks for the welcome.

  8. Hi All,

I've got a Defender 90 (J-reg) that popped the fuse for the dashboard (and indicators) a few days after buying it. When I changed the fuse it had a 25amp fuse in it's place instead of the correct one (10amp I think), so I assumed the previous owner just stuck in whatever fuse he had.

I replaced it with the correct fuse and it ran ok for 2 weeks but then popped 3 fuses in 2 days.

I know it's all very vague, but any ideas? Is it a known fault?

    Where should I start looking?
