  1. Hi EFILandRover,

    I'm planning to move to New Plymouth with work. Whereabouts are you based?

    Any idea on what New Plymouth is like? I'm going for a 'look see' trip at the end of November and if all goes well I'll be out there as soon as visa's can be arranged!

    Im in Wellington. Im not really too sure about what New Plymouth is like. I havnt been there in a long time. The 4wheeling here is really good though. Most rivers you dont need permission to drive on them. There are lots of old tracks here that you can drive on. Are you into hardcore stuff or more sedate driving? A good New Zealand forum is Offroadexpress. There are lots of people that can point you in a good direction on there. And lots of them may live around New Plymouth.

    Another good thing is that you're never going to have to drive far to go wheeling. There are lots of people on offroad express in Hamilton which is not very far away from new plymouth and they have just done a 3 day trip around the middle of the north island.

  2. Can people post their measurements from the ground to the centre of the bulkhead bolt?

    If you've seen my thread in the projects section you can see how high it came out, and I didnt want it that high :angry: . Still, its a good excuse to go 37's :D

    Anyone is welcome to post here. All the winch challenge vehicles are perfectly welcome as a comparison to mine.

    I equal 710mm from the ground to the bolt, on tyres measuring a tad over 33"

    Ive heard that you can convert series rovers to automatics by using a 200tdi box, and the bellhousing will bolt up. So... is this true? what do you do for the torque converter, and where does the transfer case lever end up being?

    Also, I know of where I can get a box and transfer case but the guy doesnt know what they came out of. The only thing he can tell me is that it came out of a 1995 tdi :blink:

    So whats the difference between the 300 and the 200 bellhousing?

  4. I am currently putting coils under my 2a. I had just copied the rangy geometry, and used a rusty chassis as a donor for mounts, but the coils on the front want to be where my swivels are (toyota axles) so I am using some old coil over now, but am going airbags in the near future.

  5. Interesting, this is exactly what im doing. But with coils. And mine's got a hilux front (originally leaf sprung) and a LandCruiser rear with a hilux diff head (lots of clearence). The housings are shaved as well. I am also using a toyota master and booster for my brakes.

  6. Just a bit of an update, I am going to do the swap. But.... I will wait a couple of months to do it. I need my rover going asap so I am going to coil it and run with the 202, but in a couple of months I am going to install the airbags and install the v8 :D

    I just need to get assorted parts like... a ZF auto and transfer case and an LPG kit.

    Also, would it be worth extending the wheelbase to 100"? I have a rangy chassis that I can cut the rear suspension mounts off as well

  7. Maybe I should at this point mention that im going to run toyota axles front and rear on custom airbag suspension (so its not so tippy on steep sidelings). I am also in NZ so the buying engine mounts and exhaust isnt really an option. Besides, Id rather have the exaust exit behind the doors and a small muffler :D

    I am going to fit a 109 stage 1 firewall as my current one is stuffed. Could I fit the engine in front of the bulkhead without cutting it? ie fit a slimk radiator and electric fans?

  8. I have been given the opportunity to convert my series to a v8. The v8 is a 3.5 out of a 78 range rover and I can get a 4 speed range rover manual for it. If I did convert it, could I bolt up a zf auto to the same gearbox mounts later on? Whats involved with getting it behind the grill, and will it have more power than my Holden 202 with EFI that has 109kw of power? Is the conversion worth it?

    I have still yet to complete the swap. The rear is a landcruiser fully floater with a hilux head welded in (lots of clearence). Its pretty easy to do. The diff heads have been shaved (for another 1/2 inch or so clearence). Im coiling the front. The rear has been easy so far as the internal diameter of the cruiser is the same as the external of the hilux and the shaft splines are the same. Ya kinda need pics to explain it properly. My dads mate who has a trials truck, has been running like this for yonks and hasnt broken anything.

    Where would I start a build thread?

    The reason I chose toyota axles was the availibility and strength in NZ. You could run with the standard landcruiser (fj40) diffs which are stronger, but if I run 35's on a hilux diff, it would be equal to running 37's on a cruiser.

    The front is a standard hilux with rangie control arms and some old fox coil overs I got realy cheaply B)

  10. I used to run 32x11.50s and broke halfshafts no problems. I became good at changing them and have now run out of my supply.I have moved to toyota diffs (well in the process) and am going to run 35's with (hopefully) no problems :ph34r:

  11. I am currently thinking about fabricating some endoskeleton wings (my stock S2a ones keep hitting things :unsure: ). Does anyone have any pictures or information about creating them?.

    BTW my S2a is in the garage at the moment getting some toyota axles front and rear (hilux front and landcruiser fully floater rear with hilux head welded in (for more ground clearence). It has a holden 202 EFI motor. The front is being colied and the rear will probalby be sprung over.
