  1. Matika stuff is quite nice, i personally use their drills to keep parts commonality with the tools at work - if mine breaks i take it in and swap it for another ;)

I would prefer DeWalt, not really sure why, they do seem to last a bit longer - not in terms of battery life, just that they survive daily knocks better

  2. Had this problem in the old 90, seemed to come in near the door seal in the region of the bulkhead to screen frame join, should be easily fixed with silicon :)

Was driving a new 110 with 4miles on the clock the other day and that was leaking upwards in the centre of the screen, its a fairly common problem ive found. You just cant beat good build quality

  3. I too have an ingersol rand 2135 qti and I agree about the durabilty its spot on...but I have found its not as powerful as I had hoped I have a hydovane compressor (only about 4CFM (proper cfm not over inflated chinese cfm)) which runs at 7 bar (105 psi) with a 200 litre tank and 3/8" hose and there are still some bolts it wont undo and I have to crack them with a breaker bar. I was told by a commercial fitter that I should use more pressure as he runs 150 psi . Whats your thoughts

At work the pressure is about 130psi and that seems okay, but it never really see's any really tight bolts - we only have cars less than 2 years old and the tightest i can think of is new freelander subframe bolts at 180nm plus 180degrees (somewhere near 450nm i think) or RR hubnuts which are f*kin tight  . BogMonster probably has a better idea what the actual figures are

Where my mate works they run 150psi(ish) but their lines are patched, split and leaking in so many places i doubt the gun see's anywhere near that, still manages truck hub nuts okay though :)

  4. Alternatively to buying a new belt, you can use some belt dressing agent to coat it - giving it increased grip. However as this stuff is usually more spendy than a 2quid belt i wouldnt bother

vv EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TIP (not recommended unless you dont enjoy having all your digits) vv

And for those on a budget of zero, i have in the past (at work when a new belt was unavailable) gently rubbed a fairly smooth file against the side of the v belt while the engine is running, be careful not to contact the fan or other belts too had as files and snapped belts can cause mild discomfort when they hit you in the face at speed

  5. Ive used the Clark cheapo job from machine mart, i wouldnt recommend it unless you dont plan to use it - mine lastyed 2 months

Dont buy Snap-On air tools ever - in my experiance they are sh*t, a complete waste of time. My 3/8 drive impact gun (the new gay red magnesium one) is back at snap-on to be fixed again, i had it 3months and it decided it didnt want to do forwards so it went back, repaired and a week later it was doing it again. They have now had it for over 4months and "are waiting for parts". T*ssers  Everyone i know with snap-on air tools complains loudly and often about them

My Ingersol Rand on the other hand is a top peice of equipment - i have the 2135QTI, it is well made, light, powerful (1000lbs/ft or 1356Nm in reverse), and most importantly quiet like you wouldnt beleive. I would recommend them to anyone if your budget can stretch to it. You can find them for as little as £150ish although list is closer to £250. Do some research and you will find that this is more powerful than many 3/4 and some inch drive guns. :D

This tool has so far survived 18months of daily use and shows no wear or damage. It has been repeatedly drop off ramps and fallen off my toolbox and still works fine.

We have another at home, and a mate who is a truck mechanic also uses one and if it can survive falling off the top of a curtain-sider (he wrecks all tools  ) then it will stand up to most abuse.

Use 10mm airline or larger (8mm will strangle any gun) and oil daily for a long service life

  6. Here's how I did mine using a Southdown removable towhitch.

It worked very well although I'm getting rid of it now and going for an 8274 in a new cross member.

Will, if you are thinking of selling your winch mount and/or winch then I would be very interested, and theres no rush :)

  7. I tried to be really sophisticated with my choice of citys, so I can make up for shortfalls in my personality....

Luxembourg, Cambridge, Prague, coventry and now Bicester of all places.

The first and last time anyone will read the words "sophisticated city" and "Coventry" intentionally typed in the same sentence :D

I go there for work BTW ;)

  8. hi lewis, are you after 2 strikers (lift up type) for the b posts of your 90? i converted to pushbutton a few years ago and may just still have the old ones lying around. if i can find em and your interested i'll post em to ya.

    cheers paul

Cheers Paul thats exactly what i'm after, let me know if you find them and i'll sort you out with some beer tokens ;)

Ralph, Jas, thanks for your help :) espescially part numbers. I managed to get hold of a Td5 era rear door striker yesterday so i'll try and persuade that to fit to my 1987 90 with earlier (i think) rear door, if not it looks like i'll be needing the Td5 lock and handle mechanism to go with it.

    Thanks again

  9. Is the striker plate/catch for the rear door the same as those for the lift handle front doors?

The catch for lift handle doors is MUC2959 (according to paddocks) but I cant seem to find one to suit the rear door specifically

I need 2 for my lift handle front doors and 1 for the rear door on my 90

If anyone can help I would be very gratefull

    Many thanks

  10. When we changed my rear axle i had a mate stand on the axle on either side of the ball-joint while i beat the axle where the taper mounts repeatedly with a large sledge hammer. Worked nicely on both the disco and the 90 :)

This only works if you havnt got a tub fitted :ph34r:

  11. As a starting point, do any of you know what springs are fitted as standard to a 90 truck cab?

    Si

These are the specs according to SteveG here

    RH Rear NRC9448 Blue/Red 15.31" 225 lbs/inch

    RH Front NRC9446 Blue/Green 15.19" 175 lbs/inch

    LH Rear NRC9449 Yellow/White 14.80" 225 lbs/inch

    LH Front NRC9447 Blue/Yellow 14.80" 175 lbs/inch

  12. I would be interested in a pair of springs that are the same free length as Red/Whites but were heavier poundage. I can only guess at what though.

I have red/whites all round with a tdi and at the minute the truck sits level, I would like to keep the truck level when the winch and bumper goes on :)

  13. Thanks to everyone for your advice, its given me plenty to think about. I'll probably see some of you at an event soon :)

your wagon (looks speced from the thumbnail) needs ( Bishes list) but i would empahsis decent tyres, recovery point front and rear, first aid kit and some require a fire ext.

The truck in my avatar is my completely standard 1968 S2a daily driver :D

My truck for off-roading is an 87 90 tdi with Gwyn Lewis suspension and little else at the moment, soon to be fitted with my M10000 when i make/buy a bumper, so i'm proper beginner level :)

  14. If you have to use branded fans then Spal are better than either Pacet or Kenlowe IMHO, someone posted a link to a cheap supplier on ebay recently. Use with one of SimonR's X-eng fan switches and roberts your fathers brother :)

Alternatively if you work on a budget of zero, like me, then you cant beat scrapyard bargains as Tonk has said. Mondeo V6 fans fit nice and come with a cowl thats almost the same size as the V8 rad, or if you have a tdi then Renault Megan fan & cowl is spot on

  15. Nige

Many thanks for all the info - just read it all (nothing better to do at work  )

I'll have to talk to a few friends before i confirm but i think you can be expect an entry from at least 1 team, maybe 2, depends how many cars (and co-drivers) we can muster :)

    Thanks again

  16. Myself and a few friends want to try a competitive Punch Challenge event soon but none of us really know the craic.

I have a general idea - you drive around a site looking for punches, occaisonally regularly use the winch, and whoever scores the highest punches wins. But we really want to know everything else - what equipment its usual to take, which events to try first, that kind of thing.

I appreiciate that seeing is easier than explaining so can anyone recommend an event coming up thats local(ish) to the midlands where we can go along and watch? Sadly Slindon this weekend is too far :(

Sorry for so many vague quetions but I'll be extremely thankfull for any advice you can give :)

    Cheers

  17. Lewis, just picked up a std TD (19J) and from the looks of the exhasut on that maybe mine was the TD one not a 200tdi one. not sure now what a proper 200tdi one looks like.

Yeah i had one of these on the car before the tdi conversion, i thought yours looked similar, the bore is slightly smaller. Might be worth changing for the price, complete 200tdi def system was around 90 quid IIRC :)

Did you have trouble with mating it to the Steve Parker downpipe? (sorry dont know the history of your truck so ignore me if you do not in fact have a disco engine) I have heard from other people that there are issues with mating a TD exhaust to the Steve Parker, but the standard def 200 tdi exhaust will mate straight up. I dont know any of this from personal experiemce - my exhaust is yet to be fitted as i still havent bought the downpipe - but have heard it from friends
