  1. Right then, a bit of progress but still the same issue! Have fitted a new oil pressure switch, the oil pressure light now works which is great, and turns off when the engine starts, so I can assume I have sufficent oil pressure. I have also drained the oil and re-filled it to the correct level. However, I still have the same knocking sound which sounds like its coming from the top end. I have noticed that when I rev it in neutral, the knocking seems to dissapear when in the mid range of the revs, and appears again when in the higher sections of the revs, and the same on idle again. Not sure if that good give anyone any ideas/clues? Few other questions, how do I check the timing? I know there is a inspection cover, could I do it with that or do I have to take the water pump off e.t.c? Also, what marks am I looking out for? and what am I looking out for when taking the rocker cover off? Just loose nuts that may need nipping up? I will go and take the rocker cover off now and await some responses! Thanks in advance!
  2. Will try all this when im back from holiday. Its a shame the video doesnt pick up the full effect of the noise. It was exactly the same as my current tdi until the drive home where it really did become stupidly nosier!
  3. Ok mate, will do all of the above when I get back from hols and report back!
  4. Cheers Western, I do have another working 200tdi (in my series 3 with snapped chassis) so will try that. Do I have to drain the oil to remove it or will it be ok? Will have a quick search now, although I suppose I could try my other dipstick aswel!
  5. Ahh, where do I start?!?! Bought a new Land Rover Defender/90 yesterday, it has just been fitted with a Disco 200tdi. Anyway, after viewing and deciding to buy it I drove home. (around 30miles) I then drove to work which is another 30miles, all without any problems other than the clutch starting to slip when the turbo kicks in due to oil on the clutch (crank seal needs replacing), which I new about anyway. Anyway, after traveling back and reaching a roundabout and the engine on idle and road noise lower, I noticed the engine was rattleing away, I would descibe it as it sounding standard but about 10times as loud. Anyway, pulled over and turned it straight off. Initial thoughts were that the the engine had run out of oil. Checked the dipstick and it was around 1 inch above the maximum line, which confuesed me. Oil filler cap is covered in black oil, so looks fine. Expansion tank was ok, with clean coolant and the temp was perfect with no smoke coming from the exhaust what so ever when running. My Dad towed me home and I have only just got round to looking at it now. Unfortuanetly, the oil pressure light doesnt seem to work at all, no signs of life even when the ignition is on. Have just had the dash apart and the wire is connected to the circuit board, and the bulb is working. The wire is also attached to the pressure sensor. So im not sure why that doesnt work, and if the engine has oil pressure. Does anyone have an idea on what could be up? Oil pump knackered? Engine knackered? Head gasket? Over fueling e.t.c. At the moment I assume the engine isnt getting oil for some reason, as thats what I think it would sound like. Just after some ideas at the mo, or if anyone has experienced anything like this before? Im holiday as of tomorrow for 1.5 weeks, but thought I would try and get some ideas thrown around. Have taken a video and uploaded it on youtube, but it doesnt pick up the actual loudness, so sounds pretty standard, worth a try though. The smoke is just from the start up. Cheers guys.
  6. Spot on lads! Its already been poly bushed so shall just unbolt and swap! One thing that was confusing me, is that my front axle has two pipers per caliper and my current setup has one. Obviously thats not an issue, but I was wondering how I would get round that?
  7. Evening chaps, Have recently bought a 90 with drums on the rear. After a quick search I see the Disco axles should bolt straight in? (I have front and rear off a H reg 200tdi Disco) Seeing as I already have disks on the front, it seems pointless swapping the font over, so could I do just the rear? Would I have to change the diff, or would they be ok with the standard front axle? Also, in some searches I found that a few had added a rear bias valve? Is this nescesary? Experience and issues would be good to know! Thanks!
  8. Some really good info in here guys, thanks. Think im going to convert the axles first. The series gearbox is still managable at the moment. I shall report back when either the axles/gearbox is in and complete!
  9. I also have this (although mine doesnt jump out of gear). Its been like it for a while though, and has never really bothered me. Would be good to know what it is though!
  10. Welding isnt really an issue, have decent welding machines and my gf's grandad is a welder by trade so thats that sorted! Heavy steering isnt really an issue as I have converted it to power steering. I have military shackels allready fitted, and dont mind to much about getting an angle grinder to it! Cant work out why I will loose 20mm ground clearance though? I guess the main things are the brakes, after off roading at mud monsters the weekend before last the brakes were shocking, it was pulling all over the place due to the carp that had got within the drums, wheels locking e.t.c. By the time I had reached home (40miles ish) they were back to normal. I have rebuilt the axles/brakes and do agree that they are most likely as good as disks, but the issue is after off roading. Another thing (I will get flamed for this ) is that I prefer the coiler axles as it makes the land rover look much more better due to the wider track width! Sad, I know. Just got to get around to doing it!
  11. Sounds easier then just changine the diffs rather than the complete axle, although I wont have disks all round then. Dont suppose you would know if my 200tdi disco axles (H reg) would fit my 1982 Series 3 axles? Thanks
  12. Yeah, have read through all those threads before. Its not my main vehicle, and I have axles laying around, sure I will be able to work around things!
  13. Fitting disco axles with leafs springs. Why? Whats wrong?
  14. Yeh, the casing on a salisbury is alot bigger than a standard land rover, so less ground clearance!
  15. Ok, thats good to know. Suprised a defender gear box would make it slower. Looks like it will be worth fitting my disco axles at the same time then. Cheers for the help, will give you a pm if I get suck!
  16. Perfect! Will be ordering one of those! Best of both worlds as it also gets used off road. Thanks!
  17. Will have to get some quotes on props, think there is a place near me that does them. Do you mean diffs within the axle? If so, I have some discovery axles ready to put on! But I was going to tackle the gearbox first. To be fair, running around town its fine, but its used 99.9% of the time on main roads to play days, which is usualy a 60mile round trip at least. Thats when it gets annoying.
  18. Yeh, deffo! @Bowie69 - Yes mate, just the rear pan
  19. Thanks. My current box is fine, its just the gearing. Traveling at 50mph (satnav) and the engine is reving its bolocks off! I could fit an overdrive, but that will cost me more money. Also, my current box crunches alot which is a pain, so the defender box should be like driving another car with its syncro(sp)!
  20. Is it really worth that much? Have had it on ebay before and it didnt sell for £50! Think im going to replace the casing. If it was a simple unbolt, bolt new one on, I would have done it, but cant be bothered with buying more parts e.t.c. At least I know the one I will be repairing is in working order. Thanks for all the info!
  21. Perfect, thanks guys. What sort of modications would be needed to fit the disks?
  22. Morning chaps, I currently have a 200tdi fitted to my series 3. I bought a 5 speed 200tdi Defender gear/transferbox off ebay a few months ago and am now prepared to fit it! I will idealy be removing the old gearbox from the bottom, cutting out the existing gearbox crossmember and fitting the defender gearbox and welding in a new crossmember. Could anyone who has done this before give me any advice or tips on what to do, what way to go about it. It will be taking place on my drive Also a few questions: I assume I will have to buy a new 200tdi defender clutch, cluctch plate, flywheel as my series 3 one woudlnt fit? Will I have to get some prop shafts made up or will the originals fit straight into place? Could I use a Defender/discovery gearbox cross member to use to hold the box up, as it will fit between the chassis and its pretty much there? (think I have one laying around) Will a defender transmission tunnel bolt straight in and fit against the new levers or will I have to hack my Series one to pieces? Thats all thats I can think of for now! Thanks
  23. Morning all! The 90 rear axle has started leaking due to rot, but I have a rear 110 salisbury rear axle in the garage. A few questions, Will it simply bolt on? Will the diff ratio's be ok? And the main thing, could we swop the old rear disks of the rotten axle onto the salisbury axle? The 90 is L reg 1994 The 110 axle is off an F reg 1988? Thanks in advance
