  1. thanks for your replies, by any chance would you have a photo or diagram? i bought a manifold that had been made to fit, so i was lucky there! just the actuator I'm having problems with
  2. i bought a secondhand vnt turbo set up, I'm having problems with the actuator, i cant seem to get it working, the vains in the turbo move, what has everybody else fitted? I've found the information for a 2.8 tgv actuator but nobody can find one for sale, I've found this picture of a set up, has anybody tried it? I've tried turbo technics and they weren't very helpful apart from phone bell auto services up
  3. Hi I've a eBay egt gauge, I've drilled and tapped the manifold for the sensor and wired the gauge up, it lights up with the ignition, but doesn't move, I've replaced the sensor and it makes no difference, if there is no sensor it reads to the max and with one wired up it stays on the bottom? The sensor wires are white and blue the dial is red switched live black earth white and finally green ive emailed the seller and had nothing back
  4. Hi I have a 1985 ex mod 110, with side lockers, has anybody fitted a eBay side exit exhaust? I've just fitted a 200tdi so I'm thinking it might be easier to fit one of these if it will fit. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111618087239
  5. Thanks for the photo has anybody else going to post there door trims they've made or bought
  6. I spent awhile looking on eBay, iron goat panels look good just the price, I thought or make some, I would just like some ideas the series ones seem expensive for vinyl covered mdf, the us spec trims are expensive I found the part numbers and checked
  7. any reccomendations for door cards for a ex mod 110, I've looked at a couple on american websites, priced up the wolf door skins and scared myself, any ideas out there? thanks dj
  8. my kit has arrived, has anybody a link to the instructions how to fit to a soft top? I'm slowly finishing off the small jobs and emptying the back so i can start the engine swap with less things hanging around
  9. Thanks a lot, I've been looking on and off for ages, spent an hour last night as well!
  10. are there any kits for sale I've been looking for my 110 but cant find any, been looking for 12 months
  11. I've done some reading about usin standard springs and was offered the old man emu at a decent price, I haven't a mega budget, hopefully I should find cranked arms second hand
  12. Just sent you a message, can't see it being on the road for a good few months, hopefully it's getting there
  13. I've had a set of 35 inch high tyres for my 110, people are giving different information what i should do to the suspension, i have just bought a set of +2 old man emu springs, I've also cut the wheel arches higher up and mounted wider arches. will i need to fit spring spacers to lift it an extra inch? some people have said a 2 inch lift is fine and others it needs to be taller? what is a decent budget shock? terrafirma +5 or anything else? i know i will have to fit cranked arms and a few other jobs, I'm just about to fit a 200 tdi engine with a vnt, so the next job is the suspension, I'm trying to build it right the first time, so what have other people done? the trucks going to be used for the occasional commute to work, camping trips, green laning and fun, so I'm just trying to get some information on what other people have done, I've still the mod spec low transfer box so the gearing should be ok.
  14. I've been looking at making a snorkel for my ex mod 110, there are no air vents on the wings, so I'm going to make my own pipe work, the only thing I'm having trouble finding is the top of the air filter (mushroom) is it possible to have the air filter built in? I'm swapping engines in the future so it will be beneficial for it to be out of the engine bay, the donaldson type seem to be pre cleaners, the same as most of the tractor ones, has anybody else done this? I've read lots of posts, even emailed dakar 4x4 any help would be great
  15. thanks a lot for all the advice, i like the idea of the box dave ashcroft was talking about with the big torque convertor, I dont think I've enough cash to pay ash crofts so I'm looking at rebuilding one myself, i have a v8 zf box from a discovery to start with, hi dave have you a price for the conversion plate? I'm just trying to build a decent box to last, the price of a modified r380 seems a bit high. i haven't been able to reply with working a few long shifts
  16. I've been looking for an engine for my land rover 110 rebuild, I've finished the chassis, axles and just painted all the body panels. I've been looking at bmw diesels, i know i can buy the wiring loom from rally raid uk, so the major thing I'm looking for advice is what gearbox seems to be best i know the r380 will die under the power of a remapped diesel, so I've been looking at auto boxes, a mate has a few range rover autos laying around, what seems to be the best set up, i cant find any information around the net, the closed i could find was the p38 bell housing, on to a zf hp22 with some internal parts from the hp24? any advice would be welcome, I'm just trying to find out before i buy the engine.
  17. I've been trying to get the lights working on my 1985 ex mod 110, I've removed the 6 way switch, fitted a civilian switch, connected the 2 brown wires and the 2 stop lamp wires, everything works apart from the rear tail lights, the bulbs are ok, the fuses are fine, there's power a the fuses, all the other lights work, would any body have any ideas? I've spent 3 days on and off trying to find the problem!
  18. thanks for that, the first ever engine i rebuilt was a ex sd1 v8 in my land rover lightweight. only thing i hated were the twin su carbs, ive been pricing up chassis with designa chassis people seem very helpful, any advice which is the best? think im going for the v8 on lpg land rover 90 bodywork, and I will sell the td5 when its nearly built for extra funds.....
  19. thanks for all the advice and ideas, I'm just home from a few days in snowdonia, green laning and making a list of parts for a series 2 rebuild project for a mate of mine. the tdi has 140,000 miles td5 156,000 v8 90,000 I'm not really that bothered about loosing space in the back of the 90 with a lpg tank, I tend to travel light, I just need to make sure my rottweiler has enough space... my td5 is good, theres just been a few problems, mainly with oil leaks and electrical problems, I have to admitt the turbo lag is a pain at times, and the price of a vnt turbo cant be justified. I've been reading up on the megasquirt system, looks very impressive. about 20mpg on petrol and more on lpg sounds good, I am tempted to keep the td5 discovery on the road till the last minute, Ive been a bit worried over spares availabity on the td5, I like basic and simple (strong) engineering, my tdi was great, just the amount of cash i spent tuning it looking back was a bit over the top.....
  20. i had a 90 300tdi csw a few years ago, loved it, but in the end it had a straight through exhaust, itg air filter, silicone hoses and a full width intercooler, it flew along, If i went the lpg route i would fit the lpg tank under the rear bodywork, and may be a small one against the bulkhead, thats why i thought of using the v8, 190bhp as standard, buy parts all over the places, ive heard storys that some 200tdi parts are getting hold of, Im after an engine that i can rebuild in the future with out hunting parts, my tuned td5 is nice when the turbos kicked in, but below the turbo does tend to get bogged down a bit, im not after a racing car, but i do like things being fun and powerful, my 2 bikes are being kept for a very long time, im now in a posistion to built a 90 up in a decent workshop, with a choice of engines, bizarre really, a couple of years ago i had a vw golf couldnt afford a land rover, bought my discovery td5, and since ive been given the other 2. i was thinkin about keepin the td5 on the road till the 90 is ready thanks for the advice dave
  21. thanks for that josh, the v8 also has a working lpg kit on it, im trying to build a vehicle up, which will be the right vehicle, one chance to build it right, just after other peoples input.
  22. hi, ive currently a discovery td5 es, lovely truck, few problems with the rear chassis rusting, the odd electrical problems, 3 amigos, cleaning various sensors.... ive also been give a discovery 200 tdi, terminal rusty body shell a 300 series discovery v8 on lpg, I bought it very cheap, Ive also a 1987 land rover 90, terminal chassis and bulkhead, engine and box were sold a few years ago, i bought it, then discovered how rusty it was, ive managed to store all these in my mates yard, Ive managed to save enough money up for a galv 90 chassis. so, which engine is best to fit? v8 lpg? td5 (stage 1)? or 200tdi. this will be my only 4 wheeled vehicle, mainly for taking the dog in, and bad weather when i cant use my motorbikes. ive looked at tomcats and tornado space frames, think theyre a bit over the top for green laning. so which engine woud you all recommend? love the power from the td5, hate the electrics, love the simple tdi, just the price for a hybrid turbo and big intercooler, plugs parts avaialbilty, love the v8 growl simple engine, cheapish to run on lpg? the 90 will be built with most steel parts galvinised, I want to build a truck to last atleast 20 years, I dont need the comfort of the discovery or the water leaks. be pleased of what ideas and advice you have, ive access to a large workshop for the build, most tools need i have already. or just buy a ex mod 110 and drop in a different engine? any advice will be grateful
  23. hi, first time ive posted in a few years. i currently have a discovery td5, I'm thinkin in the next few years about either fitting a tomcat space frame on it, has anybody done it? or is it best to use a series one discovery? thinkin mechanically its in good condition, I have all the parts on it, lift, winch, diff lock, so it would be simple to use what ive got, or is there any other parts i could use? people have mentioned dana axles, either a tdi engine or bmw diesel, just lookin at what to start with or start collecting. without breaking the bank, i was going to build a kit car up and thought, a tomcat will be better, it will be kept for a very long time, dont mind basic interior and a bit of noise, but will be the only 4 wheeled vehicle, i have a few bikes. thanks for any advice in advance. dj
  24. ive been on holiday for a few weeks, sadly my phone wont allow me to post on the site, I've just found out I dont need to drive to work anymore, should save some fuel, looking at all the options im currently looking for a 110, its either buy an ex utility 110 td5 or but something cheaper and spent the money fitting a bmw diesel engine, can be tuned easily, and spend the rest of the cash on a parts for it, has anybody actually fitted a bmw engine in a defender? thanks dave
  25. hello, I have started looking for a project, at the moment the short choice is either a tomcat, land rover 110 or maybe a discovery 2. in the past ive had a few discovery 1s and 90 300tdi and a discovery td5. the discoverys rust far too much the td5 cost too much anytime anything went wrong (wheel hub bearings, fuel pumps and the odd electrical probs) the defender was great if a little cramped (im just over 6ft) So ive started looking at my next vehicle, idealy it should last about 20 years, so pros or a bowler shouldnt rust much, everything simple, cons noisey on a long run, might be the wrong vehicle as my day to day car when i dont use my motorbike. 110 they hold the prices well, the normal rust probs... discovery 2, a pain when things go wrong and the rust probs (friend has had a few plates welded already) but theyre great on a run any advice? sort of discarded the idea of an old 110 due to buying a 20 year old truck and having to do a rebuild straight away, hate the idea of rewelding a discovery together every mot, been there and done that!! I love the idea of something being more basic, easier to fix and repair, I have had a chat to a few friends and one has suggested fitting a bmw 2,5 diesel to it, after a chat to jeremy fern i think this is the best bang per pound engine around. the main use will be green laning the odd pay and destroy day, the odd weekend away, carting my rottweiller around and the occasional run to work when its too bad to use my motorbikes. any advice is gratefull
