  1. evening,

i am trying to find some information on my recently aquired racal 543 aerial tuning unit.

i have it bolted inside the atu box, complete with the newer aerial mount ( part number 5985-99-744-3409 ) and aerial, now all i need to do is power it up. the unit is for recieving only, so no need to worry about microphones etc

i am assuming that it would be 24 volts, but i wish to use it on my standard 12v defender, any solutions ?

    isk1 is a 7 pin affair, with isk2 being a bnc connector, and isk3,also a bnc connector

i read somewhere that there is a adaptor which sits between the standard mil radio's and the atu, but i wish to connect my non military reciever direct to the tuning unit.

manuals/ifo/pinouts/part numbers/pics etc would be great.

    cheers...

  2. evening,

i am convinced that my 110 200 tdi defender is down on power, and i am thinking its maybe turbo - waste gate actuator related. she's done 146000 miles.

i have replaced the intercooler hoses, cleaned the intercooler and fitted a new lift pump.

the injector pump hasnt been touched, until i can asertain if the turbo etc is ok.

there is a small amount of movement on the turbo shaft, but how much is acceptable or normal i dont know ?

i have ruled out the injectors at this stage until i check the turbo.

there is always quite alot of turbo lag, especially going uphill.

i have the usual puff of black smoke on start up, but then nothing after that, the air cleaner hoses and intercooler hoses have a trace of oil, but thats probaly normal i guess.

1 ) can anybody tell me how to check the waste gate actuator to ensure its working correctly ? (independant of the turbo ? )

2 ) whats the correct standard turbo boost pressure for my 200 tdi defender ? ( 0.84 bar ? )

3 ) would i get a new waste gate actuator with a new turbo ? or is it a seperate item ?

4 ) what happens if i adjust the waste gate actuator rod ?

    TIA..

    cheers...

  3. Converted my 109 from full HT to full rag top and the 90 is also full rag top (though sometimes it goes topless, wears a bikini or a three man tilt).

Rag top is great, versatile, no noisier than a h/t without lining and no condensation problems. Easy to peal back for better access/visability when working on the truck. Surprisingly strong and durable as well.

    evening,

do i need to waterproof a new canvas ? and do they shrink when wet etc ?

    cheers...

  4. evening,

is there anybody that has converted a 110 hardtop to a full soft top ? or maybe runs a series soft top ?

    pro's and cons ?

i am of thinking about converting my 110 hard top to a soft top, the security issue isnt much of a concern, as i never have anything of great value left in the vehicle, i would probaly have to fit various security items, but am more interested with the daily running with a soft top...noise, weather, durability, problems etc.

    cheers...

series..defender, not much diffeance ! and as i have blanked off the rear door, and removed the interior mirror to make way for the gps holder, reversing is best done with bonce stuck out the window :-) i also have the airportable, but that came to me as a hard top, ho hum etc.

  6. evening,

which vehicle is it for ?

defender tailgates start at about £90+vat, to around £115+vat

    series ones are about £90+vat

the usual suspects have them, paddocks, craddocks etc

    cheers...

  7. evening,

not to sure that best and cheapest go together, but paddocks supply glazed door tops for around £50 each, as do craddocks, i dont think there will be to much differance in price, but a google search may dig up something.

    cheers...

  8. evening,

i think anybody which a good general knowledge of military landrovers would be a good choice, although, aside from specific military vehicles, ( airportables,101's etc ) a general landrover enthusiast, should fit the bill.

when the stampede has receded, put my name down on your ickle list, i am no expert on landrovers, military or otherwise, but i have books and can read and write boss...

    cheers...

  9. evening,

the 101 forward control runs 900x16 tyres as standard, with the following road based tyre pressures:

    front 28

    rear 35

or 21 front and rear for off road conditions.

as your hybrid has alot of modifications, then the tyre pressures will simply be,another mod !

  10. evening, having looked at the pics, the articblower is very, very similair to the rack blowers we fit in our coaches, and the arcticheat is nearly the same as the coach heaters ! so i bet you can guess where i am going this this line of thinking.... :-)

thank you for the pictures, i can feel some fabrication coming up..

    cheers...

  11. Arctic heater needs a home, cluttering up garage and I've had a RR for a few years now so no use to me anymore!!

The front plate has had the pipe connections turned around to fit it behind the bulkhead (S11A SWB) but otherwise std. in reasonable nick with all pipes (i think) and block connector/tap/themostat housing/window vents/etc.

    Pics can be e-mailed.

    evening,

how much do you want for the heater, pics please.

    cheers...

  12. evening ralph,

i have a part number for the sender unit fitted to a 101 forward control, if its of any help ?

    579375 ( 12 volt )

    579324 ( 24 volt )

the above part numbers are, i think for newer vehicles, as opposed to the s2b ?

crook brothers seem to sell a few 101 forward controls, maybe they could help tracking down the correct part ?

  13. Some pictures of my chassis to give you a few ideas at this stage it was totaly standard with no repairs.

    evening lee,

as i have just recieved my half chaasis, it appears the same as yours except for the diamond bracing plates and diagonal braces, ( thank you..oneten110 )but i cant see a problem welding some plates in, i shall just refer to you chassis pic.

    cheers...

  14. Hi dastardly, ive completely rebuilt my lower bulkhead on the existing "goalpost". One thing i would have done differently is weld a brace across the left and right posts at the bottom to hold the posts the correct width apart if you are doing it off the vehicle, otherwise the welding and fabrication can alter the differences meaning it won't fit when you put it back on (ask me how i know!)

Mine was rebuilt using sheet metal folded to a profile template i sent to a metal workers. They bent it up to the correct angles for a few bear tokens and I welded it together. It's not an exact rebuild i[',ve omitted the vertical bend in the passenger side next to the transmission tunnel as it made it easier to fabricate and didn't give you much extra room. Ive also changed the dashboard design, it mow sticks out rather than sitting flat the idea is to have a shelf at the left and right hand side a bit like a series 2 dash for all the junk that you have nowhere to put.

    Cheers,

    evening lee,

the centre section of my bulkhead is fine, however, the footwells are completly shot, as is one "goalpost" leg,and both door hinge panels are shot, but other than that its plain sailing !!

i now have 2 new hinge repair panels and some 50mm box for the "goalpost" leg, which, when welded in place should give me the correct profiles for replacing the exsisting footwells.

i am sure i will need some more advice from you as the rebuild continues :-)

    cheers...

  15. Apologies for the delay, But I finally managed to take the measurements and made them as follows;

    WIDTH 59.5 inches

    HEIGHT 27.75

it was a bit difficult to get accurate measuremnts because of all the stuff fastened to the bulkhead. If they aren't accurate enough for you, or are wildly different to the measurements you are getting off yours, I will have another go at a different position.

    evening,

i now have the measurements, and they are pretty much the same as the ones you have listed

i have 28" tall, and 59.3" wide so your tape measure is pretty accurate !

    cheers...

  16. ok, i've got one of those plug in cool boxes, its a good one, made by Camping Gaz, but ive never used it when its been realy hot..

is it going to be any good on my Morroco trip this summer? or is it asknig to much of it.. i know its just a cooler and not a fridge, so it'll only cool to a certain amount bellow the ambient temp... <_<

or do i start mentioning the word Engel around the mrs.... and see what she thinks about us splashing out on one? ;)

there are some good deals on the 'bay at the mo, from a 4x4 place near brighton... :)

    cheers

    evening,

i drove to the south of spain last august, with a cooler type device in place of the centre seat in the defender, but i found that the unit generated quite alot of heat into the cab,via its external cooling fan, after it had been running all day ! the contents were kept cool though, had it been in the back of the vehicle it would have been ok, but then i wouldnt have been able to get at the contents whilst driving etc. the more expensive ones should be ok.

    cheers...

  17. The lightweight land rover club is up and running, and they are the only supplier of footwell repair panels that are correct as dispite what some of the "experts" say the footwells are different.Have a look on the clubs website at www.lightweightlandroverclub.com.

    evening,

i emailed the CLUB SEC, but the email adress on the site dosnt work, as it was returned to me ! but i have emailed somebody else on the lightweight owners club website, so i will see what happens, after easter i will try ringing the telephone numbers supplied.

    cheers...

  18. brilliant, cheers very much :)

    evening,

some military series 2a/3 109's used this valve, (and switches etc ) so luckily its not airportable specific. the series 2a wiring has a differant part number compared to the series 3, but the switches are the same across the board.

the switches are wired in "series"

    cheers...

  19. evening,

whilst everybody seems to have this xmember attatched to their dumb irons, i cant find any info about it,( length, width, thickness etc ) it dosnt appear to be in my pats cat ? and after having looked at the chassis diagram, no sign of the diagonal braces or diamond plates, and my "original" chassis had already been butchered out of all recognition !

any info/photos would be a great help ref: chassis diagrams, front xmember to dumb irons.

    cheers...

  20. Whilst series footwells can be used to replace those on a ltwt, they are quite different. Apart from being narrower than normal series footwells, the angles on airportable footwells are different as well. Not sure if it is still the case, but at one time the lightweight owners club used to make replacement items. Not even sure if the club is still going, it never was the most active of clubs.

I will measure the depth and width of mine tomorrow when I get home. The basic structure is pretty simple, a "goalpost" with various flat panels welded onto it, the only vaguely complex structure is the footwell area

    evening,

thank you, i have stripped the bulkhead down to all its glorious rusty components, but the bottom of the "goalpost" is v/slighly bent, hence the need for the measurements.

    cheers...

  21. evening,

has anybody rebuilt a bulkhead ? (excluding the vent panel)

if so, can standard series footwells be used ( modified of course ) easy ? difficult ?

can somebody suppy me with exact measurments for the following :

    width of bulkhead

    height of bulkhead

    cheers...
