Hi All,
well with winter approaching and my rag top feeling colder than usual it was time to start playing with my heater again. Last year I stripped it down, cleaned the matrix inside and out and resealed everything and re-set the control cables. This did improve things a lot, but still not what I'll call great.
I happened to be trawling ebay dreaming of VNT turbos and came across some carp listings for electric superchargers for 40quid (these were discussed ages ago and don't work). There really boat bilge blowers for clearing fumes from engine bays. It suddenly occurred to me, these things generate no pressure, but do shift a lot of air. A bit of measuring and search made me purchase this.
It's an Attwood 3000 4inch bildge blower, 22quid + delivery, it draws very little power and shifts 250cfm (obviously with no restriction), 100% duty cycle and is designed for a marine environment.
we then removed the odd air intake tube from the wing
and cut the legs off the blower
With some brute force, it fits snugly inside the intake pipe. As single self tapper fixed it in place. some minor trimming was also required.
To finish off we wired the blower directly to the motor power on the defender heater box. This means the bilge blower also operates at 2 speeds. I also increased the fuse to 20amps instead of 10amp.
So what are the results, well I'm pleased, fan speed 1 actually does something now fan speed 2 much better I'd estimate maybe an extra 50-75% throughput. Though with the extra increase in flow it has revealed some leaks in my heater box, so still improvements to be had. There is slightly more noise from the additional fan, but you can't hear it over the engine. There is a nice roar coming from the vents though.
Only issue so far is it maybe over cooling my heater matrix at slow speeds!!
Truck being modified is a 1990 200tdi 90, thought I believe everything up to TD5 has this layout.
Cheers

Chris,
Not quite that desperate yet, a few more years of Land Rover-ing will surely see to that though
Ruuman,
That's a great help, thanks.
I've never done any towing before, so I'm thinking about buying or borrowing a trailer (plated to a figure that is 1. less than my 90's GVW and 2. when added to said GVW not exceeding 3.5t (so anything up to 1746kg)) and doing a bit of practice towing it about. Especially things like reversing etc. If I can save myself some money that would be good, as it's looking quite expensive (~£800) to do a 4-5 day course which is what most companies are recommending.
Good idea getting some practise in, but I think 4-5 days @ £800?!?! probably going a bit heavy. The test really isn't that hard. Plus the instructors match there tow cars to there trailers exactly. So they tow like there not even there!
The only trailer stipulations that matter to you for the test is it must be plated above a certain weight (i.e. so it's braked) and of a certain height (basically to block the rear view and force you to use the mirrors). Even though there plated for the weight, you tow it empty. So the only thing that effects you is the reduced visibility.
I think my training and test came in at the 300quid mark. Maybe someone on here would do the test with you to cut down the cost?
-
I did mine with Martin Lovell based in Redhill and took the test in Guildford. http://www.freeindex.co.uk/profile(martin-lovell-adi-and-trailer-instructor)_207207.htm 1days training then 1/2day with test. How you could make it any longer than that I don't know, but some companies do.
I did it with a friend and it bought the cost down considerably. He was pretty good and didn't clock watch at all. We basically took as long as we wanted to train until we were happy. Basically if you are a competent driver and have towed before the test is a piece of tiddle. Both passed first time
-
right off to buy a lot of lottery tickets... Ball park figure at all?
-
Watching with "extreme" interest , I take it your 200tdi setup covers both disco and defender layouts?? I believe Allards one only did Disco. Also is standard pump tweak all that is needed to get it to run correctly?
Cheers

Hi ruuman, i'm quite interested in coming along for punch hunt
In the same boat as steve, not a memeber with you guys at the moment but if you've got some more events coming up in the new year i'm sure it would be worth it!
How do we go about signing up for the 27th and getting membership?
Cheers
Tom
Hi Tom,
Best thing is to PM me and I will send you some details, fill in this form http://www.mud-monsters.co.uk/files/membership_application.pdf and bring it with you and join on the day. I like to think we put on a good show and next year should be a good one with lots of fun stuff planned.
Were hoping to have the new website up soon with a lot more info and such.
As I said before, your more than welcome to come and see us on the 21st Nov for a chat and a cuppa, or were be competing at Mike Wolfe the weekend after if your attending that come say hi.
Cheers

Might pop over and have a chat/look on the 21st yeah, I recall being told that I'd need a hi-vis to come and watch?
Like the idea of teaming up for the punch hunt, will have to bribe someone with a winch
Yes spectator should wear a yellow hi-vis, please no orange as that is our marshall colour, we have all sizes (including kids) for sale if you don't have one.
Team challenge is great fun, all the guys in the club are really friendly so I'm sure I can find someone. Have you got a co-driver? your really need one
I'm actually competing that day. It's my birthday and as a present "Jon V8" who I bitch for has stupidly said were swap roles that day so should be fun!!

hi all,
As this will be more of a single fun day event, scrutineering will be light, but for the new year we expect everyone try and get there trucks to standard.
By engine cutoff were ideally after a battery isolator (i'll change the wording in the next version of the handbook)
Retroanaconda I would ideally like a spring as bungee's loose there tension over time and the mud and water can damage them; saying that i have a bungee myself at the mo
But that will be fine for this event as long as it's got a bit of tension I'm sure it will be just as good as a spring.
I'd hope we setup the event to be fun for everyone that day, it won't be as hardcore as the previous winch challenge. Winch-less trucks will have punches and fun sections to try, but obviously won't have a chance on some areas, but if you team up with someone a lot more becomes accessible.
Your running a good size tire, we have a few series guys who seem to do pretty well, I'd think your by fine, why not pop down on the 21st and have a chat and a cuppa.
Cheers

Is a MSA competition license required?
No, we try to keep things simple, the main aim is trucks are of a safe standard, the rules as they currently stand are:
Competing trucks require
Engine and winch cut offs
Working horn
Extra return spring on throttle
Working seat belts or harnesses
Fire extinguisher
Winch sails for winching
Gloves must be worn for steel winch cables
We break trucks down into 3 classes on a points system. Each winch is 1 point, tyres 35inch or more 1 point, each axle locker is another point.
Class 3
0 points, this is pretty much the bone stock class, no winches or lockers (unless factory fitted) and tyres smaller than 35inch.
Class 2
2 or less points, this is where most people will fall, front winch and maybe some big tyres or a locker.
Class 1
3 points or more, where the big boys play, multiple winches, full lockers, anything goes
Hope that makes things clear

Hi Steve,
Were planning on running a 4 event winch challenge series next year at different sites. But we also try and have some fun punch hunt days to try and encourage more people to get into competition. I also want to start doing the odd trial sections and a few other bits as part of the play days.
Best thing to do is join our facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=118475959823 and you can see what's going on and get invites to all events.
There's a play day happening on the 21st Nov if you want to come down, see the site and have a chat with us. PM me if you want some details.
hope to see you there
Cheers

I've used the slime stuff in my mountain bike and wheelbarrow tyres for years, works great. When you pull a thorne from the tire and it instantly seals it's worth it's weight in gold, does make the wheels a bit heavier though.
As for the foam in a can stuff, an Aussie mate who used to go across the outback swore on the stuff. His favourite bit is you can re-seat a bead with it. My only experience was a stubborn mini moto tyre that had a puncher I couldn't find and had popped it's bead. 1/4 of a can of foam solved the issue, stayed up for a year. I took the tyre off to to see what it looked like inside, the foam was the consistansy of shaving cream, maybe a bit lighter.

Right then everyone. Mud Monsters is holding a fun punch hunt, This will involve lots of winch sections as well. This day is for all the family and will be on the monday after boxing day, Monday 27th DEC 2010. The day will run from about 9:30 - 4:00 and the cost will be £25 per truck, Please note we are a members only club but we are happy for new members to join at a cost of £25 per year.
A free glass of mulled wine at lunch time and a minced pie for every one. lots of easy punches to find ( and a few hard ones) Taped winching sections that will be easy for a 1 winch truck, ranging up to some hard ones where 2 or 3 winches will help.
Prizes handed out at the end of the day for the punch hunt and Raffle. Raffle tickets will hidden around the site and 5 at each punch ( 1 each for the first five that get the punch) Plus the chance to buy some as well. lots of prizes on the day. All money raised going to Sussex Search and Rescue.
Also as the norm hot and cold food and drink from the burger bar and a free jet wash at the end. ( £1 donation to sussex search and rescue) Also the last chance to buy the famous calendar if any are left.
Plus we now have a new toilet block on site.
AT THIS POINT I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT WE HAVE BEEN RAISING MONEY FOR THE SUSSEX SEARCH AND RESCUE THIS YEAR AND WOULD LIKE TO HAND OVER A BIG CHEQUE TO THEM AT THE END OF THE DAY SO PLEASE MAKE SURE WE DONT LOOK CHEAP AND GIVE US YOUR DOSH PLEASE
www.mud-monsters.co.uk/
THE SITE IS NEAR GATWICK IN SUSSEX
Yours Mark and Rupert @ mud monsters, any questions please ask

just bought a spanky new xeng anchor, mud monsters will have 2 trucks there at least, looking fwd to it. may invest in some warmer clothes though
-
after getting hold of some discovery/range rover 200tdi mounts I have wondered if they would be a good solution. there pretty substantial

-
ok probably not this, but remove all your ancillary belts and give the engine a rev. Mine was making a bloody awful row for ages. myself and many others assumed it was turbo. The diagnosis never sat right with me as it obviously didn't sound quite right with the rise and fall of revs. Turned out to be the alternator!!!
Spinning it by hand all seemed fine, but the bearing noise always started at the same sort of rpm the turbo starts singing.
I went through 2 unknown engines, before I got fed up, killed the piggie bank and paid turners a visit. Expensive, but now very happy!!

I've got a tmax twin pump that fills an air tank (about 10 litres).
What pressure do you guys run your t max's up to ? at the moment mine is off at 100psi (ish) and back on at 90.
I've got a little regulator to drop the pressure for the arb's and winches
G
my system runs to 120psi, purely because it was the cheapest pressure switch I found http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Air-Compressor-Pressure-Control-Switch-90psi-120psi-/360306823738?pt=UK_Air_Tools_and_Compressors&hash=item53e3f5d23a
like you I use a regulator for the arb, it works well. I need to add a one way valve though. The tmax is good for 150psi I think.
-
T-max single piston here, had it for over 2 years, used constantly. I now have a small resovoir under seat and the compressor behind the middle seat. Puts tires back on rims no problem, air duster but no big tools. been under water and mud many times. I stripped it down, absolutely no damage. Amazing value. i'd go for the double pumper, but they didn't make it then.
-
Ruu got some footage, posted it on ewetube but they took exception to the soundtrack so I need to disguise it and re-post.
For the next event can you make the big rocks in the river a little smaller please, Sunday was proving to be rather expensive !
cool, cheers geoff, I'll steal that off you. the truck camera mostly caught Jon crashing into things and then overheating a lot!!!
haha, don't go blaming my rocks!! if you insist on running with toothpick trailing arms. If money's a bit tight I have some breadsticks and masking tape you can make some new ones from!! should just as strong
-
Right so here are the results, really good turn out with a 50/50 split of class 1 and 2 trucks. Any comments on how we can make it better and what we did well would be great. I already have an A4 page of improvements. if anyone has some good video please can they let me know.
Big thanks to the sponsors, the marshals and especially the burger shack ladies
thanks Ruu

I'll put a ton up wens when I have a spare second, but if you want to see some now join the "mud monsters" facebook page

ok were heading to the land now to get everything ready for tomorrow's challenge.
if you have any issues please give us a bell on 07961315065 or 07910884852
hope to see you there

shame you guys can't make it. Judging by the weather at the moment there's going to be some seriously muddy stuff and some good water. should be a good, if not very wet day.
Cheers

I've been looking at the website as thinking of joining and doing the pay and play days - i can't see an address though? do you ned to be a member to get the location?
Also, is this the same place that used to be the Mud Factory?
cheers
Hi Leon,
We don't advertise the location of the site as want to try and keep the site for genuine offroaders rather than people who just want to drive like twats and smash up whatever car they have stolen that morning. This is also one of the reason we have switched to members only. If you interested in joining send me a PM or call the number on the website and were give you the details.
Were a friendly all makes club of more than 100 members and rapidly growing, quite a few are LR4x4 members too. Your more than welcome to pop down and spectate at the winch challenge and see what were all about.
As SJ_4x4 said, it's not the mud factory, way bigger.
Good to see the site is being opened a bit to more people, although I can't say I'm rushing to dish out £50 for the first go...
Shame as the site is literally 5 mins from home.
If your only 5mins down the road why not pop along Sunday too, I know £50quid is a lot the first time, but end of the day how much does any other club's membership cost? We hold a lot of genuine off-road events all through the year (min 1 a month). Next year we hope to do even more. But if you do want to spectate please try and wear a yellow hi vis, send me a PM if you have any questions

Rubber thing on the back of injection pump 200 Tdi ?
in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)

it's worth squirting some WD in the hole under the rubber thing now and again, keeps the boast pin nice and free. I've had to pull apart 3 fuel pumps because cack has got in via the breather
