  1. Hi, over the last couple of weeks, whenever I lock the Rangie by pressing on the alarm keyfob, the central locking locks and them immediately unlocks. The alarm arms fine and stays armed. Predictably the problem is intermittent and there is no problem if I use the key to lock up. Has anyone come across this before? I did see the other central locking post, but that doesn't really answer my question. Oh and it's a 1992 3.9 Vogue SE... Cheers, Chris
  2. Ok, had the mobile Krypton guy round to take a look last weekend. Timing was slightly off and she was running a little bit lean, so adjusted the timing and riched up the mixture a bit. Unfortunately the problem remains. Since all the electronic components have been changed and all the vacuum pipes renewed and all possible parts cleaned out and generally tidied up, there are really only two options left: - fuel pump (although surely that would make the problem permanent, not just from cold and doesn't explain the hunting when starting from warmish after a short run) - ECU (which could be the culprit for all the problems, though unfortunately I do not have access to a known good unit, so I guess I will have to get it refurbed) That's unless anyone has any other ideas or fancies coming down to London to take a look for themselves Thanks for all you help so far, Chris
  3. Hmmm, but wouldn't that be a constant problem, rather than just when the engine is cold? Haven't had a chance to get a Krypton tuner in yet either... Will keep you posted though...
  4. Morning all, the timing has been adjusted, it was apparently way off and it is running a little smoother than before. I'm not sure there is an EGR valve, where would I find it if there is one? I don't think it's an air leak, I replaced all of the pipework with new items. The brake servo could be a possibility, there is a soft squelch coming from the brake pedal when I press it... I may well give the Krypton tune a try. What puzzles me though is that most of the symptoms only appear when the car is in Drive, it seems fine in Park. Haven't tried Neutral though... Cheers as always for all your tips... Chris
  5. Hi Orange, thanks for your reply, I've cleaned and lubricated all moving parts of the throttle assembly, all the vacuum pipework and pretty much everything else I thought might make a difference. Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be that simple Cheers, Chris
  6. My 1992 Vogue SE 3.9 is still not behaving.... When starting from cold: - Revs freely without hesitation when in Park, idles beautifully - When stepping on the gas in Drive, almost stalls, then recovers and drives off, idle feels a bit lumpy - Once warm, instant throttle response, no stall, idle feels a bit lumpy When starting from warm after short drive (less than two miles): - Starts, then hunts, up to 1500 rpm, down to almost stall, back up to 1500, down to stall, recovers to normal - Idle feels a bit lumpy When starting from hot after long drive (over two miles): - Starts instantly, revs to 1500 or so, drops to normal idle - Idle feels a bit lumpy Replaced so far: Air flow meter, pipe from AFM to throttle body, stepper motor (air bypass valve), throttle potentiometer, vacuum pipes, flame trap, coolant sensor, HT leads, plugs, distributor cap and rotor arm. All accessible parts to do with engine breathing have also been thoroughly cleaned and all the connectors cleaned and greased. Short of the other temperature sensor (is it the fuel one?) and the actual ECU, I don't know what else could be causing the problem. It's not a CAT model, so has no lambda sensors to play up. According to the garage everything is fine, but I suspect they only checked things while the car was in park (when it has no symptoms)... Please help, I love my Vogue and this problem is bugging me... Cheers, Chris
  7. Well, in the end I got tired of hunting for vacuum leaks and took it to a garage. Turns out one of the temperature sensors was dying and the timing was way off. Problem seems to be cured now Thanks for all your help, Chris
  8. Hiya, I asked this question in the 'old' forums and got some useful tips, but I forgot to save any of them thinking the forums would be around for a while. Plus some other symptoms have become apparent since my previous post... Anyway, the title kind of says it all, the only way to switch the air conditioning off on my 1992 Vogue SE, is to pull the fuse out. When it is on, clouds of condensation pour out of the vents and ice starts to form on them. The temperature controls do not seem to change anything, so I expect a thermostat somewhere is playing up. I'd appreciate any other ides. I don't think the system has been regassed for a long time, so maybe that's a starting point... Cheers, Chris
  9. Thanks for that, parts now ordered from Rimmer Bros (they were the first to reply to my numerous emails to suppliers)
  10. Cleaned it out already, will try the pan scourer next time My T-piece broke while replacing tubes, see my other post here. I don't suppose you have a spare or know the part number? Cheers, Chris
  11. Morning, went to replace the breather pipes from the flame trap to the plenum / throttle body this weekend. As I pulled the short bit of hose going into the throttle body off, the plastic T-piece snapped. I did manage to effect a temporary fix using super glue and a bit of silicone, but the slightest bump in the road will almost certainly snap the T-piece again. Sooooo, I was wondering if anyone out there might have a spare T-piece (happy to part with beer tokens if you have) or if anyone can tell me the part number. I could also really do with a replacement for the small hose that goes from the T-piece into the plenum at the front right. Oh and it's a 1992 3.9 Vogue SE... Cheers, Chris
  12. Flame trap found and cleaned out, just full of nice black oily crud. I did notice that the pipe connecting it to the throttle body / plenum was a little brittle where it fits onto the flame trap, so a new one has been ordered. Also ordered every other bit of vacuum pipe I can lay my hands on and a new filter and cap for the breather on the right rocker cover. I'm hoping changing them might make a little difference to my cold stalling (well, almost stalling) issue... Cheers, Chris
  13. Excellent, thank you very much, another little job to add to the weekend list... Cheers, Chris
  14. Hi, I understand that one of the possibilities on the rough running / not starting / dodgy idle check lists is the flame traps. I've searched high and low and found very few references. Could someone enlighten me as to what they are, where they are, what they do and how to check if they are doing it in the way they should? Cheers, Chris
  15. Hmmm, it's a brand new stepper motor (the old one was the one that snapped when I tried to take it off to give it a clean). The valve seat is clean as a whistle (carb cleaner while the piece was off the back of the plenum) as are the two tubes connecting to it (main one to the throttle and the tiny one), all are in great condition.... Might have to take this to a new topic... Thanks for your help though. Chris
  16. The hunting has all but stopped now and it only ever happened when first starting the engine, never while just sitting in traffic or at lights. The accelerator stalling thing only happens in the first couple of minutes after starting from cold... Cheers, Chris
  17. Found a small hole in the tube connecting the air flow meter to the throttle body / plenum, patched it using bicycle tyre repair patch. Didn't solve the problem... Less hunting now, but the old problem remains: When cold, there is a momentary drop in revs to almost stall, as soon as I touch the accelerator pedal... Though that may be normal ;-) Cheers, Chris
  18. OK, panic over, managed to take the valve housing off the back of the plenum chamber and dug out the remains of the stepper motor with a combination of chisels, hammers and curses. That was some mean Loctite on there. Needless to say despite the new stepper motor, she's still hunting on idle... Chris
  19. Hi, just tried to remove the old stepper motor (bypass valve) and the thing snapped, the thread is still in the plenum cover and the rest is dangling at the side. Any clues as to how to get the thread out would be most welcome. Needless to say it is also loctited in place... Cheers, Chris
  20. Sorry Greg, I seem to be part hijacking your thread...
  21. I hope it's neither worn camshafts or stretched timing chain. My baby hasn't even got 64000 miles on the clock. Looking through the oil filler, everything is a light shade of brown, which would normally indicate very little general wear. Plus it has oil changes every couple of thousand miles... Anyway, have a list of things to try as long as my arm Cheers, Chris
  22. That's interesting... mine has a straight through middle box, I still have to original, I mght try putting it back on... would that affect the CO emissions though? Mine are high, around 5%...? Hmmm... Chris.
  23. Hey Greg, I sympathise and read all the replies to your posts with the hope of finding some clues. Maybe we should start a 3.9 rough idle support group Carsten, my Rangie almost always starts immediately, though the other day I left the fuse for the air-con in (only way to turn it on and off, different story though) and she didn't want to start at all. Just revved to 1500-2000 and then immediately stalled. Pulled the fuse out and she started first time, hunted for a bit and then settled. I haven't tried unplugging sensors... Cruise control works fine... Haven't checked plugs... What will disconnecting the battery do? Will that reset the ECU in some way? Thanks for the link, none of those things are in my workshop manual Will print them out... Cheers, Chris.
  24. Hi, in an attempt to avoid main-dealer pricing, I was wondering if anyone knows a decent West London (-ish) independent Range Rover enthusiast garage for general servicing, MOTs, etc... Cheers, Chris.
  25. Thank god I found you all again, thought I'd lost you... OK, so this is similar to another post on here, but my symptoms aren't quite the same. My 1992 Vogue SE 3.9 has a few idle issues and I'd love to get your feedback. When I bought the car, I was informed that its CO emissions were high (around the 5% mark), and the previous owner thought the air flow meter might be to blame. I've also noticed that when started (cold or hot) the engine revs to around 1500-2000, then drops to almost stall, then revs high again. This cycle repeats a couple of times before settling down. When settled, the idle seems a little lumpy (always thought V8s should be smoother). While still cold, stepping on the accelerator causes the engine revs to drop to almost stall, before recovering and revving as you would expect. This will go on for a couple of miles or so. It never actually stalls, but it can be a bit nerveracking in traffic. I've cleaned the stepper motor and the hunting on start-up has improved (revs to 1500-2000 then settles at around 5-600), but the initial almost stall on acceleration is still there and the rough idle is still a problem. I've checked for leaks on the air intakes and the various bits of pipework and nothing is evident. There is a distinct smell of petrol after a good run (around the rear of the car), which might indicate that it's running rich (not sure, not an expert) and I'm pretty sure it's drinking an awful lot more petrol than it should. Any help would be most welcome... Chris
