  1. Morning gents, Iv been having a couple of issues lately with the old 90 and then yesterday found another. She can sit at work for 5-6 days and start first turn of the key then other days sit 5 mins and just a single click or a sound like the battery is flat. Usually in the end she turns over eventually as if the battery is full of life. Iv tested the battery and all is ok and charging fine, yesterday she had sat for the 6 days and fired up first turn of the key so I drove the 6 mile home and stopped at the shop, be lucky to be out 2mins and gets back in and just a click then another click and so on. My old man came out and gave me a tow and she started no probs, drive home and again she wouldnā€™t start, tried a few times then on the 4th time she started no probs. Sheā€™s a kinda bitsa motor fitted with a 300tdi coupled to an lt77 so sits quite far back in the bay. Iv had a look around and whilst in there find the hose from the oil breather had melted through and snapped as it must of been rubbing on the manifold.Ā

Question is is does this need replaced or can I modify it somehow? Would this affect its starting? Could the excess heat in that area from the turbo and manifold affect the starter motor?

    Cheers

  2. To be honest Iā€™d usually do it myself but when it first started it was mid harvest so I had literally no time so got a lad I went to school many moons ago to tackle it. Kinda regretting it now. Goes in then a month or so later it finally gets done and comes with a silly bill.Ā

  3. Ok so been thinkin way too much and remembered a few things. Mechanic gave me the little copper bushing back that goes in the rear of the crank saying it doesnā€™t need to be fitted then I remembered the shim from the slave was lying in the footwell too. Gona take her off the road for a month or 2 whilst I remove the bulkhead for repairs and finish painting her so will pull out the box then and sort the job myself. Install bushing, replace shim, fit new slave including the rubber cap, fit a staple to the arm/release bearing as I found that in the footwell too,Ā adjust master cylinder push rod, replace the little hard pipe between slave and flexi that appears to leak slightly. At the moment itā€™s going fine as my old manā€™s been running around in it this week. Says itā€™s very smooth with the replacement box and slick shift so at least somethingā€™s gone well.Ā

    Disintegrated clutch plate...

Would I still be able to drive it home?Ā Done 40ml since it happened.

    Handbrake sticking partially on?

[I had this happen ages ago on a Defender, after the engine-to-chassis earth connection had been wonky for a while: the starter current had been earthing back to the battery-box via the handbrake cable, partly melting the nylon sheathing over the inner, and causing it to bind so the h/brake didn't fully release. Burned brake linings smell the same as clutch ones.]

Handbrake seems ok. Itā€™s the fact the clutch has been very spongy and now bites as soon as ye lift yer foot that steers me to clutch system related.Ā

    Turbo actuator hose come loose?Ā

Systems say more like clutch related

dead slave cylinder, what does the dripping oil feel & smell like ?Ā

Just had new slave as the box went back in 2 weeks ago but the lad that done it said it wouldnā€™t fit with the rubber seal on the end so removed it and fitted without. Need to get under when I get home and try and get a sample o the oil to figure it out.Ā

  5. Would an incorrectly adjusted master cylinder be an option? Been one o them days where iv had way too much time on my hands at work so been trawling the web. I thought earlier that on my way to work last Monday morning that when I pressed the clutch it was as if she kept trying to drive so I googled some stuff and that was one option I found. As if the pressure in the hydraulic system wouldnā€™t let it fully disengage.Ā

  6. Ok so Iv been getting an odd knockingĀ noise now and again as I let off the accelerator which I assume is the exhaust rattling as it sits just a few mm from the front of the bellhousing then today on my way home from Edinburgh she was struggling to pull uphill and started filling the cab with smoke and stunk of clutch. The clutch doesnā€™t appear to slip and the box is super smooth. At the time she was rollin coal but just didnā€™t wanna pull. Now Iā€™m lost for ideas as to what could be the problem. Iv been out since getting home and thereā€™s a tiny drop of oil lying directly below the wading plug but canā€™t see anything else outa place

  7. Thatā€™sĀ what weā€™re thinking but if you leave the box sitting full of oil it never leaks but once itā€™s in and run so obviously oil is hot it sprays oil everywhere but when you remove it itā€™s not possible to see where itā€™s come from. Itā€™s had front seal and gasket and is still the same. At some point in its life itā€™s also seen extreme heat. Pics of nylon cup within the turret

  8. Ok so I have my old girl in the garage at the mo for a gearbox oil leak. The mechanics just been in touch to say they have done all gaskets and seals but itā€™s still leaking within the bellhousing area somewhere and covering the clutch but he thinks itā€™s only happening when the oils hot. As such he canā€™t find any leak. Could it be a pourus gearbox block or are we missing something?

  9. Mmm my only thought with a wheel bearing would be, why the smell of brake/clutch. Will check everything over at the weekend and hopefully solve it then when it goes back in to get itā€™s gearbox/transfer/engine or whatever oil leak properly sorted Iā€™ll remind them not to adjust my handbrake this time

  10. Cheers, will give it a check when I get home. I actually donā€™t think it was correctly adjusted when I had the gearbox sorted. Came back and was very very tight and handle only lifted a few clicks. I installed a new cable before the gearbox was done and had it set so it still came almost all the way so that could be the issue. If it is the lad at the garage gona be gettin an ear bashing. Box came back still leaking oil and clutch slipping worse as when it went in and now this šŸ˜”

  11. Ok so when driving to work yesterday morning at 0330hrs the old girl suddenly jolted like something grabbed on hard then struggled to move freely whilst reekin o clutch then I took it easy for the last couple o mile and it seemed ok. Iv never had a chance to get back to it as Iā€™m now away all week. Anyone got any recommendations where to start lookin? Cheers
