  1. currently on some narrow rims and 245 tyres. (Standard Patrols have 265 tyres) . Got a recon box coming today so I will just hope that it is better than what's on there.
  2. Thanks have found the thead about it. It doesn't feel like a flow issue, (which I would imagine would manifest itself by there being enough power at low turning speed but it fails to keep up with fast movements) its is just a low effort/pressure. Bear in mind also I am using a Nissan power steering pump, unsure how pressures compare to the Range Rover one but the Patrol steering was definately lighter than this steering.
  3. My early RRC has very slack mounts causing the rear axle to move back and forwards a bit when you throttle on and off. The mounts don't look that old, are there cheap and nasty mounts out there that are known for going sloppy quickly? I notice The mounts on later RRCs (got an 89 chassis here to look at) are bigger, and the arms and nuts are all bigger. Was this to address some known problem on early ones, and if so, do later mounts fit early chassis, or are the holes bigger on the later chassis? I have seen paddocks do a poly mount but only list it for 86-94, so I'm thinking they do not fit in the early chassis. Anyone do a similar bush for early cars? Thanks!.
  4. Hmm., has anyone got experience of www.power-steering.co.uk? They have quoted me £140 + vat for exchange, including collecting my old unit when they deliver the new one. Quick box sounds kind of cool for offroading etc but I would guess there is a possibility it is not as good as standard ratio at high speed motorway etc as a small movement could cause a big change in direction, especially not ideal for towing I would imagine. Just been to Berks and back in the Rangetrol towing a van on a trailer. Would just be nice to make the standard box have a bit more lightness. Someone must have experimented with the internals, for example changing or reducing the diameter of the torque rod thing?
  5. Mine has always been ok slack wise, but needed more effort to turn the wheel, especially when parking / steering with one hand. Wondered if different torsion bars or whatever determines the point at which the valve opens inside the box, were available at all, to change the effort ?
  6. Need to recon or replace my 4 bolt box with decent rebuild. Your recommendations please? It seems to have always lacked some assistance but now its leaking its time to get one that works properly and nice light steering, thanks!
  7. If its like the one I used to own, the camshaft has worn down and is barely cracking the valves open.
  8. Since building up my vehicle I've had the first mechanical problem, the fuel filter blocking up, mostly with water it seems. How are these tanks vented? I only remember seeing one vent pipe which goes to the neck , presumably to let gasses escape while you are refeulling, is the cap vented? Is there a known issue with water getting in the filler neck seal? THe cap assembly is almost new and shuts tightly. Gratuitous pic of my car.
  9. i have a bare chassis here from an 89 if that helps , could cut back end off it.
  10. found this in the back of a RRC I just bought but is it a LR part? I don't recognise it. its at least 5 feet long.
  11. Recently bought a very early RRC (well, remains of!) and it has manual steering, but the box is aluminium, the other manual steering one I had it was iron. Anyone know anything about these? Chassis is remarkably good, its a K suffix registration. I will be looking to find a home for it when the docs arrive in my name as it would make a good start for a project.
  12. Update Nov 11. Have raised front bumper up 2 inches to match the body lift. Got hold of a cheap/free bull bar, very manky, holes rotted through it etc, but have repaired with new metal. Also extended the mounts to match body and bumper. I have also changed the wheels to some early 90s 16 inch Wolfrace as they sit more flush, it drives better with these and are a bit more law friendly. Might do them black, not decided. Whilst the grille was off, modded the intercooler a bit more as I was not happy with the small ID of the inlet pipe, and fitted some better horns. Other than that, I bought an 84 4 door for spares so it now has a headlining, (albeit tatty) with rear speakers in it, I presume it is an aftermarket item, its made of fibreglass, and it now has a rear interior lamp, (I put a switch by the tailgate) screen has been changed to a laminated one and I've been putting in some more soundproofing too.
  13. a little, but not bad, I don't think there are any holes, hence i drilled it all out and kept it to one side. Remainder of car has been weighed in now.
  14. Have removed quite a few bits of this actually, including rear ally floor, anyone need one? there is a non rotten rear door and a decent front bumper and a few other bits.
  15. I have a used one in good nick but i don't have a key for it. Not sure if you can get a key or a lock cyl and key for it?
  16. Hi did you get the unit I sent you? Will
  17. a 4.2 turbodiesel has plenty of grunt however I think the main issue of fitting a late gearbox to an early car is the sticks are in totally different position, and the handbrake mounts to the floor and is done on a bowden cable, rather than the early handbrakes being part of the gearbox. Not sure how people do this neatly unless they cut some of the floor / trans hump from a later model and graft it to the early floorpan. A friend of mine is about to do this so I'm sure he'd like to know too.
  18. Hi keeping rear lamps (though one is smashed) as spares for mine. Front indicator I have removed, let me check on condition. Its the early metal type with screwed-on lens I know that much.
  19. bobtail, not heard from you yet. Okay front doors sold. anyone else want anything? its going for scrap this afternoon.
  20. Screens come out easily the proper way in my exp, IE pull the 4 beadings out of the front, then sit in the middle of the car and put your feet at the top of the screen and push the top out. If doing with a laminated screen that you want to reuse, be very very careful and get someone else to ease the rubber back from the outside. THe rubber should say in the car and the screen comes out of it, unlike many other vehicles. Yes i have headlamp surrounds, even got a spare one or two and a new old stock one somewhere, didn't get your PM so give me a call O77O2 3486O4
  21. I don't have those switches as sold whole column to somebody. I have a switch out of a 72 if any good What had 24 spline then?
