  1. I can't seem to find anyone to speaking up about the "hot set up" for shocks. I don't want something cheap and would like to know what a couple of the best types for the Disco are based on experience here. I know Koni, Bilstein, Spax from my car ramblings but am not sure what has the best reputation on the Discovery 1 for combined on and off road use.
  2. Like the idiot I am at times I didn't ask the question right. I was concerned if these Procomp's were available for stock ride height or not. Sorry, didn't mean to make it sound like it did. So how much of an improvement are these over the factory ones?
  3. Someone mentioned Frog Island 4X4 as a source. Is that better than the scrapiron lot?
  4. BINGO. You^^^^^^^ nailed it. Exactly what I was talking about but couldn't quite find the words you did.
  5. Glassfibre and will take that kind of weight, (!) I stand corrected then. It just didn't seem possible. Thanks, I will look again!
  6. Well, I need to be able to traverse open gaps, the rail/ladder/ramp or whatever they're called needs to literally support the weight of the vehicle over an open space. I see what you're on about and it looks excellent for soft surfaces but whilst the load data they show is plenty of info (or for me, too much Haa Haa) I'm not sure that's what I was looking for.
  7. I will assume that's the common term for them, Scrapiron, I like it..... :-)
  8. I'm the original owner of this 96 V8i I am referring to and honestly in 110K miles (mostly road conditions obviously) I cannot remember a single ABS moment that was beneficial to the situation, NOT ONE. I can recall many when applying the brakes in a turn lane and encountering a hole or bump I get about 10 feet of no brakes/ice feel. I am dead serious that this is a wrong interpretation of a situation by the system and an engagement of the ABS that makes for a very scary moment. If I lived in a northern clime with snow etc, I'm sure I would have experienced some positive situations, but Arizona only gets rain and I definitely don't need it. I normally drive cars and somewhat fast 'on road' and have become very accustomed to being very observant and can't imagine being any more serious everytime I drive than I'd need to be at a track event. Looking ahead as far as possible is likely what's prevented ABS engagements in the Disco or in any of my cars. I have had hard brake moments with one of my BBK (big brake kit) cars but it wasn't an event that warranted the engagement or helped the situation, it only briefly pulsed from my over exuberance at pretty high speed. I know it functions..... You are likely right, in the Disco the ABS may disengage below 5mph as you referred to, as the symptoms I recall were all related to speeds probably above 10-15mph or so, moving along a road and missing a well disguised turn and stabbing the brakes gave me a very successful (but still unneeded) ABS ops check.
  9. You've likely got a point. Bummer, I was looking for a permanent solution to carrying the second spare and need it to be low in order to fit into a garage. That WAS the plan anyway......
  10. I have found a set of ATV ramps, 5'X16" (1.5mX40cm) that have a 10K lb (4.5 Kilo) capacity for $330 US (around 150 quid). They have a slight curve to them as they are designed to be an ATV ramp for trailers, they seem like they'd be excellent to strap to the side of the roof rack as sand ladders (or whatever the common term for them is....) especially here in the desert for track washouts. Do these sound do-able or would you more experienced blokes suggest the longer but narrower 7.5'X12" (2.2mX19cm) 6,500 lb capacity (2.7 Kilo) ones (they're asking around 225 pounds for this set)?
  11. I have a plan to mod the bars that connect the factory roof rack rails in order to hold a cradle for a spare wheel/tire. Will it support the weight? I suppose the manual might have info on that but while I was here I thought I'd ask.....
  12. Have you already done this? It does NOT involve taking off the airbag or the wheel (if you have one similar to my S1). It can be done with the wheel in place as I just did mine. It just has a tricky little 'catch' that prevents it's removal after all the screws/plugs are removed.....look closely at the new switch, you can spot it and give you a tip as to where the small flat blade screw driver is needed to allow it out.
  13. ABS sux. It scares the hell out of me off road all the time, literally making a loose dirt/gravel bit feel like ice. I don't care what they say, I don't need it. So equipped I'm stuck with it right? And, Yes it has not only activated a couple thousand times when I don't need it but it clearly has the block under the bonnet with about 50 lines going in/out of it....
  14. Are these shocks ok if one wants to retain the standard ride height? I'm looking for new shocks and want them to be of better quality.....
  15. You guys are awesome, I knew I'd pick up lots of leads here. I already have flip top jerrys so spout up and outside was a good plan from what I'm hearing. However I've had mine for around a decade now and it's dry here....yet no leaks......I will keep the comments regarding the screw type in mind next time for certain though. So a 'special' alternator from Land Rover was 120 amp, ummmm interesting. I will still get a quote from the HO Alternator people just so I know what that option is but it won't be my only lead now. Besides, I will likely need a core unit anyway so the search is on. I was already expecting to upgrade the main alternator to battery cable as I've already done this to my Focus. In case anyone's thinking the Focus must be a ICE life support system, I attach a pic.... And my somewhat timid but venerable Disco without the 3rd set of lamps (still working the wiring!) which are identical to the rectangular set and just outside of them in front of the bumper under each headlamp: Appreciate the Scorpion Racing tip, but they were valuable in that their adverts show a lot of equipment in one spot. Now I know 'what' to look for and just need to figure 'where' at this point. Many thanks again to you guys for the responses!
  16. I rather enjoy exploring and camping with mates, just a couple vehicles and some 7.5 minute Topo charts. Pick a direction.....and see what's out there. Great privacy and remote desert locales work well for sighting in new rifles etc. However, for some local get togethers with Land Rover owners, could be worth it..... I'll search the companies that make or modify alternators then, HOalternators.com has done HO variants for my SVT Focus for me, I'll check their site since it seems it's not a common thing with the Discovery. Appreciate the offer and I wish I was a local but shipping from the UK across the pond for a heavy part would be ludicrous. (I just paid $25 shipping for two lamp covers from the UK, holy brown matter. I could ship 6 of those back to him for that amount.) I've been aiming for a 180 amp, it's the basic upgrade output for the Focus, with many versions over 200amp. What's the standard output of the Disco's? Around 120amp? Fuel cans inside the vehicle, am I hearing you right? I need to mount them securely outside. I saw an ad in Land Rover owner Intl today for Scorpion Racing and low and behold, Jerry can holders for roof racks. That's a start at least. I miss my old Carawagon where I was able to mount one right in front of each wing, worked wonderfully, sure miss that old beast. The Disco will be just a bit more difficult.....
  17. I tried search and the FAQ's, and looked a bit on this forum but frankly didn't see anything to answer my queries..... I about to get moving on the '96 series 1 V8i Disco again, I started by installing a third set of aux lamps recently (have the stock alternator and a yellow top Optima battery) and of course, being a light freak I have upgraded bulbs in all of them. Note: I have separate harnesses w/relays etc for each set, nothing is mickey mouse. I think the standard altenator could handle them as long as I don't use too many other accessories at the same time, but since it's likely about time to replace the alternator again anyway, I'd like to upgrade it. Is there a known unit out there or am I on my own to find an outfit that upgrades our standard ones? Also is there a known ground upgrade kit possibly recommended? I have about 50 questions but basically just one more for now, where do most Disco offroaders mount 5 gal Jerrycans? I'm not a member of any offroad clubs, and do most of that on my own so I don't see any other Disco's that I can use as examples. Any tips on a good site, or possibly help a fellow Disco owner out with a link :-) to where I can see some good examples of what the best set up is? Thanks in advance for any help!
  18. While checking under there I'd look at the rear prop shaft U-joint as well.
  19. I emailed them, it's a place to start.... Thanks!
  20. As usual, I saw, I overreacted, I didn't fully read his description..... You right hooker guys are pretty lucky, that was a really good deal.
  21. Just curious, there aren't higher output units available that would suffice?
  22. If my Disco was in Old Blighty it would probably still have an intact headliner, unfortunately this dry desert weather is bad for a lot of items, especially interior stuff like this. Even in my garage out of the sun, the temps are very high and the lack of humidity is still unfriendly to interiors. I can do a search like anyone but I value owners opinions and hoped their experience would give an educated recommendation I would likely be able to trust. I would have thought with the varied uses a Disco sees, maybe a lightweight or more durable shell would have been devised by now. It was worth asking.....
  23. Hello all you Landy owners, I'm an original owner of a North American 96 V8i. I love it and have had many memorable adventures in it. I have many questions of the owners here but will restict my first to my latest panic. I haven't looked up at the headliner in the last several trips in my Disco and I was appalled to find the lining of the headliner is coming apart/drooping. I know the standard answer is to have a trim specialist re-line it but I wanted to see if anyone has a done a solid shell type of headliner before, something like carbon fibre or glassfibre that would basically be a PERMANENT replacement. I did a search on headliners and got 2 entries that didn't apply, any info or leads to other possibilities would be greatly appreciated!!
  24. I've asked the seller if it can be made to work on a North American model, that's a great deal!! Such a great deal it probably won't work as my luck goes.
  25. Hi guys and gals (?), my first post. I wanted to confirm that the SRS light definitely does not go out in a given period of time. I had to do some tinkering on a road trip whilst having a strange domino effect problem with my lights. While checking connections etc something must have spiked (although my radio settings remained and I did not have to enter my code.....?) and now I have the SRS light pulsing, since March if I recall correctly. I'm due a return visit to the stealership so will have them address it.
