  1. thanks folks. i got everything off today (including hub which was quite tight!). leak is definitely from the drain hole in the nose of the pump.

no obvious cracks in the pump itself so i'm tempted to just replace the gasket and see if that cures it. IS IT likely to be the pump itself ??

presumably the only place to get replacement gasket is Land Rover themselves, right?

also, now all this lot is off anything else you would suggest doing at the same time?... new hoses (although mine look fine), heard some people say silicon hoses is the way to go?

    anything else worth doing?

  2. thanks les, i will look for that this morning. i have the viscous unit off now and water is deffinitely coming from behind the hub... going to try and get the hub off now.

by the way, my viscous unit is caked with mud etc - dont know much about these, what does it do (apart from being a big fan) and could it be broken?

    thanks, dan

  3. hi, once again please excuse the lack of knowledge - this is my first landy with no prior mechanical experience but im trying

i've been having cooling problems recently which looked due to a radiator blocked up solid with mud. symptons were overheating, buring off water, and no heat from heater.

on good advice i took it down to the jet wash to start getting rid of the muck in the radiator. back home i've noticed i am loosing water (drip, drip, drip)... on a little examination i think ive found the source.....

(excuse the terrible description).... its a few inches lower and deeper than the centre of the fan at the front of the engine (just beneath where the pipes to the radiator go. it doesnt look to be coming from a pipe joint, just eaking out and dripping down. any ideas folks?

ive heard of blocks "cracking" - could it be this? if so how easy/difficult for a novice to fix and how expensive to get someone who knows what theyre doing to fix it?

    many thanks in advance. dan

  4. i agree with other posts that say unless you're really serious about competing and are likely to have breakages then drive it there and back. i get a lot more satisfaction out of that way but only go every month or so, id say the more frequent you go the more likely you want a trailer. isn't half the fun is seeing if you can thoroughly use your vehicle ON and OFF road!!

  5. hi,

John Craddock Limited (based in Cannock but has good website) does 2mm and 3mm, sells most peices (apart from front floor plates) and ive found the quality of the 2mm good (and some of the cheapest around). fitted wing tops and bonnet last weekend. came pre drilled so was a doddle with an electric drill and £12 rivet gun from halfords. did it in about an hour.

  6. hello again, you may have seen my other current post on overheating from last night/this morning....

gone to continue my investigation in the engine bay and as usual there's another problem .... may bonnet release catch wont work :o

its got a inch or so movement in it but its not releasing the catch, whats the solution folks?

sounds like another weekend outside, the missus is going to be chuffed

  7. Thanks for all the suggestions. Some more details in response.....

I will give the rad another good blast with the jet wash.... i have to admit you cant quite see daylight through it yet

It takes probably 20 mins before overheating and only seems to start when at "high" speed (say 50 mph +) .... if you back off and start trundling along at 30/40 the temp seems to back off.

Will check the bottom row of fins this morning and report back.

Will also check the oil filler cap for white sludge and report back.

    cheers

  8. Hi all,

Up until last Sunday I've never ever had a problem with overheating, it always hovered just below half on the gauge when warmed up.

Last Sunday I have to admit she ran out of water and in the mean time of course overheated. Replaced water, cleaned radiator off of mud etc but on a longer run the temperature is still rocketing. Any suggestions as for next steps?

    Thanks, Dan

  9. Thanks for advice guys.

Had a mate look at it and he said the starter is spinning but teeth not meshing, either cuz they are warn down/snapped or cuz its stuck in out position due to being covered in muck.

Anyway, i need to get the starter motor off to see. I'm running a 2.5 TD and apparently I need to take top of exhaust off to get to it. Had a look in tech forum for some advice as to where to start - this will be my first attempt at dissambelling anything under the bonnet.

any tips/links to help me get started on the dissambley would be great..... or do i just go any buy a Haynes manual?

    cheers

    dan

  10. Help needed again i'm afraid.....

Never had any problems starting whatsoever

Last week had snorkel and breathers fitted (great!!! ) but maybe the guy shorted something cuz...

Then, she started "clicking" when you turned the ignition, just one click each time (like a relay click) and no sound of the engine trying to turn. She'd always start on like the 9th/10th go.

Then went offroading and the above problem stopped!! But, later in day she had flat battery. Jumped her a few times and gave her good runs but still had a flat (either not trying to charge or not taking a charge).

Went to jump her today to get down to battery place and.....

first few attempts she was turning over but not enough juice to start her then.....

after 5 minutes of trying she stops turning over and now each time you turn ignition all I get is a nasty mechanical grinding noice and vibration through the gearstick, no electrical sounds whatsoever. :o

Aghhhhh!! Missus isn't gonna be happy if this costs much.

Any ideas? Im a novice so go easy on the technical mechanical terms please!!! cheers, dan

  11. Hi all,

Still waiting for my 90 pick up to come back from garage but in the mean time Ive got myself a 36" Jackall (just like hilift/farm jack). Ive got the mounting kit but trying to decide where to put it.... and thought it get your ideas.

    My thoughts were either:

    i) on top of one wing alongside the bonnet lying flat

ii) down the side the outside of the rear tub

iii) up against the back of the cab in the rear tub

any experiences of pros/cons, thoughts, ideas?

    Cheers

    Dan

  12. Update: combination of winch and a 7series pulled it out of garage and got handbrake off. Then I actually had nice surprise.... no more smoke and a lot of the power is back!!! (although not all) ... air filter must have dried out a bit. :)

Now with mechanic getting a well deserved service and all fluids changed, maybe new injectors? Will keep posted on final outcome.

If anyone knows Avon Dassett off road quarry - be careful of the lake at the back of the site where the 8ft reeds are... it can get deep - look whats happened to me!

  13. Thanks for all your replies.

Went to get it out of garage last night and take it to mechanic and handbrake stuck on. Not enough room to rock it back and not enough power left in engine to pull itself off. Going to try pulling it out with a 7series BMW later this morning.

Garage now covered in black soot (plenty in my lungs too from trying last night). Fingers crossed for this morning :o

  14. Hi,

Help needed please!! I've got a 1989 Defender 90 pick up 2.5 turbo diesel. Went off roading for first time last weekend and went wading a bit too deep.....

Water must have only just breached the air intake but i think some did go in as symptons are as follows:

    1) Lots of white smoke/steam from engine and exhaust immediately afterwards but ran fine for 30-40 mins then went to go home......

    2) Started up fine and sounds normal.

    3) At low revs sounds and drives normal.

    4) Once past what i guess is about 2000 rpm you get no more power from her - if you press the accelarator then no change in engine noise but you do then get black smoke from the exhaust (more you press the accerator the more smoke you get).

So she's now very slow and tops out at about 35mph. She got me home but what do I do next - I'm no mechanic. Helpful suggestions about whats gone wrong and what I should do next ... please!

    Cheers

    Dan
