Need some extra clearance for a non standard exhaust system. This being one of two options which would keep the intermediate section of the pipe nice and straight. The other way would involve putting bends in it, which, ultimately, I don't suppose will make that much difference to the flow but would involve more phaffing about getting it to fit.

Will a TD5 or Puma gearbox cross member fit an '87 chassis?
Would be most obliged if someone could tell me.

I'm waiting for a couple of parts from him as well. I've just emailed him but depending on his response, or lack of, I might need his number too.
Jon.
The parts still haven't been delivered, so if someone could forward Autocrafts telephone number to me, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Never realised there was more than one of you...and anyway, what have you got that other shocks haven't?

Anyone used this company before. Their prices seem most reasonable.

Ralph, it came in a polystyrene 'encasement', no cardboard box, nothing to id it at all. In comparison to the original there are many details in its construction that are completely different. I'm 90% convinced this is a pattern part but I thought that I'd try to find out in case I've got it wrong and it is genuine then I can get it fitted this weekend and get the old girl back on the road in time for the snow thats been promised.
It certainly needs changing....a few weeks ago some p*ss poor sub-standard excuses for human kind broke into the Landy and tried stealing it. In the process they smashed the lock but couldn't get the remains of the barrel out so instead they stole my Hi lift, sunglasses and a holdall containing a hide and assorted camo' kit and a butterfly net . Any way, an engineer was sent to have a look at it by the insurance company and I told him I was quite happy to do the work myself, to which he agreed.
Chris, I don't have any reason to doubt that they won't willingly resolve this but I just wanted some info to confirm or disprove my suspicions beforehand. Either way it looks like its going to be another week before I can get it back on the road, which is a bit of an arse really.

I've just received a steering column lock (part number QRF100870) which I ordered from the LRseries website. I had the option of ordering a pattern part or, the one I ordered, a genuine one. However, I'm convinced that what has been delivered is a pattern part, so with a thirty odd pounds difference between the two, I need to make sure that I'm right in my assumption before I call them on monday and point out the possible error.
I'm assuming that the genuine one is still manufactured by Lucas (or whatever it is they call themselves now) and as such would have lucas and England embossed on the back of the switch, a number in the casting and an aluminum disc with the keys with the key number stamped on it and finally the dead give away would be the box, being either Landrover or Lucas (TRW?) instead of the polystyrene thing it arrived in. The part that I have is devoid of any markings and, the key barrel in particular, looks rather nasty.
So if anyone has any insight on what a recent new genuine one should look like, I'd be most grateful for the information so I can arm myself, just in case.
Thanks.

The horizontal pipe matrix is aluminum, as opposed to brass (or was it copper?) on the other type, which, on mine anyway provides a faster warm up in comparison.

Thanks men...
I've just given it a gentle thump (as opposed to shaking it) and the needle went to zero, so it looks like it should be ok. I'll still test it though.
A most useful thread if ever there was one. Just need to find a loom now.
BTW Ralph, how many communication devices can one man have in the cab of a landrover.....?

Thanks Ralph.
So its potentially duff then.
Is there any way of testing it off the vehicle? I'm intending to use this to upgrade mine so, as yet, don't have anything to plug it into.

I've just received a TD5 speedo/instrument binnacle that I purchased on ebay.
It is in generally excellent condition being only 2 years old, however, the speedo needle is stuck at 15mph. Is this normal or should it, as I was expecting, be free to move or does it need to be plugged in and energised to rest at zero.
Thanks in advance.

When I phoned Ashcrofts first, it pains me to say but the lady I spoke to didn't provide any info or offer any help/suggestions, it really was a case of 'computer says no'... which left me wondering why, hence my comment.
Dave, thanks for that....at last . It would be just what I am after but, unfortunately, February is too far away, I don't think my gearbox will last that long, the vibration that has developed is becoming quite violent so it would be handy if I could find a box before christmas and fit it during the christmas holidays.
Incidentally, what is the difference between the LT77 bellhousing and the R380 version? It must be significant if you're getting bellhousings made.
Oh yes, still need to find a box from somewhere.
Jon.
-
Thanks Mark , I'd be most interested. The only thing though is the bell housing and shaft length, aren't they different on a disco?
I tried Ashcrofts first. The one they were offering would have been perfect. I did ask if they could build one for me but apparently they can't (won't?).
Does anyone know anything about TM transmissions or had one of their boxes?
Also, a definitive answer regarding the use of the LT77 bell housing would be useful. At the moment my understanding of this is the LT77 bell housing is slightly too long.
Jon.
-
I need to replace my mainbox, which is an LT77s. What I'd really like is an R380 but it would need to be the short shaft version.
LEGS would build me one but I would need to find the bell housing. TM transmissions has one on Ebay with the bell housing, but I've not heard of them before so unsure of the quality of their rebuilt boxes. The local dealership wants £1700 for a new one.
I've trawled the internet and not come up with much so I was hoping if someone might be able to point me in the direction of a supplier, any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Thanks for the input everyone, most helpful.
BTW I think The Harv was looking for the Valeo part number....looks like the Hobnobs will have to be put away for another day
Jon.
I just found this on a couple of web sites.

I'm now wondering if the site I looked at was just using the photos as a representation and not necessarily an accurate picture of what was being described. I've just looked at some other sites and found both 4 and 8 spring Valeo clutches being described as the same thing without any mention of the HD version.
I'd be interested to know if any LR Parts Valeos have ever failed.
Jon.

Further to recent discussions about Valeo clutch failure.
This is a photo of a Genuine LR part clutch kit STC8358, manufactured by Valeo.
Note the number of damper springs in the clutch centre.
This photo is a Valeo branded kit of the same application.
Just visible through the wrapper there are 8 springs, as opposed to the 4 on the genuine plate.
So, why the difference and which type is prone to failure?
I might be needing a new clutch soon as I think the Borg and Beck on my 110 is about to let go, so some clarity on the subject would be useful so I (and others) can decide which one to buy. I've used Valeo prior to the B&B and never had a problem and would have done so again but for the reliability issue.

Maybe wrong Login Les ???
Nah, he's just showing off again....
Jon.

So, the question is, what specifically is its purpose and was it really effective at doing it, why was it deleted (cost saving/didn't work) and why was it reintroduced on the 300Tdi..... and...... if I haven't got one do I really need one ??
-
My parts catalogue says:
ERR1530 Rocker cover Up to April '92
ERR3368 Rocker cover From April "92
So if Jims was one of the last 200Tdis and doesn't have one then it looks like it was deleted from april "92.

The castings on both the old and new cylinders lack lettering or any other identifying marks but are both identical. The old one was package in a Lucas/TRW box and was purchased from DLS. The new one came in the new TRW box as you described but the cylinder was in a plastic bag with Lucas written all over it and it too came from a reputable independent local to me.
Apart from that....its time to make myself look stupid now....
Had another go at bleeding it today and discovered that the non return valve in my "eazy bleed" kit wasn't working properly. Got another bleedin' kit, and it bled fine.
Who is it that never blames his tools...?
Any way, I'll reserve judgement on its quality, see how long it takes for this one wear out.
