  1. I'm getting a heated front screen fitted soon and I'm in the process of installing the wiring for it.

I've got the relay and switch side sorted but I need to find a suitable power source for the screen. LRO mag covered this installation a few months back but the article suggested wiring from the battery with an in-line fuse up to the relay but I'd rather use a suitable ignition controlled power source (wire) near the fuse block but not certain about which one to use.

Also, what type/size of connection is used on the windscreen? Presumably its some kind of tab.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. My niece came round today in her new Fiesta ST  .

When I had a look inside, the first thing I noticed was the incredible similarity of the the dashboad to that of the new Defender.

I now understand why I don't like the new dashboard in the Defender. The design just doesn't fit in with the rest of the vehicle.

For such an iconic vehicle, they could have thought of something more appropriate.

  3. I

think it is Richard Baker at Stondon Massey, 01277822001

    Best Regards Bill Westley

OH YES thats him, I remember now.........Turn down School road in Kelvedon Hatch then turn left towards Stondon.

    Thanks Bill.

    Cor, what a relief.

  4. I recall a chap who dismantled landys in the Brentwood area, but I can't remember his name or where his yard is, if indeed he is still trading (he often had a stall at Sodbury).

I think its off the Brentwood to Ongar road but I'm %$*£^! if I can remember, so I'd appreciate it, if someone who knows what I'm on about, could point me in the right direction.

    Thanks in advance.

  5. I know this topic has been covered before, but the search I did came up with nothing, apart from the thread in the Tech archive on the installation of the switch gear.

What I'd really like to know is what's involved in the installation of the dash, what bits I'm likely to need and if any existing parts will need modifiying.

I understand the front vent levers require repositioning, for example.

I remember a thread somewhere that listed the part numbers of the items required, which would be a great help.

Any help would be much appreciated.

  6. The series ones have been available for a short while now Richard.

You do realise that you have to get your wallet out (that'll be a first)

Fight off the mass of moths, bats, long lost friends, ex wives, etc

Hand over what to you would seem like a Kings ransom

Then (after considering suicide after spending money), read instructions.

    Do the job.

Justify the expense to your poor, long-suffering wife.

    Les. :P

But Les, white five pound notes arn't legal tender any more :D

  7. So Jon, does it work as it should, or have you completely stuffed it.

Ralph....all fixed, working as it should do, even the intermittent wiper is working properly and already proved its worth.

Thanks to the photo it took just ten minutes to fix......until I realised that I hadn't fitted one of the screws that hold the switch in place...which meant I had to dismantle the steering column shroud...AGAIN...

    Anyway, job done at last.

  8. By 'eck.

I've been working away for the last 3 days and having just seen all the replies...well I'm staggered at the response. Thank you all very much.

    Mark the picture is perfect.

Since this seems a common problem (due to a basic ineptness), perhaps it would be a wise move to put this in the Technical archive.....to provide assistance to the next poor sod who wasn't paying attention just when he (and it could only be a 'he'....apparently) should have been.

It will probably amuse you all to know that whilst I was away, having not managed to fix the wipers, relying on the single wipe of the intermittent set up and because I put my trust in the BBC weather forcast saying it was going to remain dry and therefore I wasn't too worried about it......well.....it rained...like tomorrow was going out of fashion....and then the hail started. And there I was, driving back to to hotel....half a wipe every two seconds.....how I laughed.

    Jon.

  9. Well Mark, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.....

I tried crossing the spring and just about every other permutation I could think of....all to no avail. What should have been a simple 10minute job is turning into a right pain....Thanks anyway.

Yes Simon we're talking front wipers, but the rear wipers are next on the list. Got me thinking about the park wire though, thanks for that.

It'll be good when its sorted though, it gives an infinately adjustable interval between 2 and 30 wipes per minute.

    Jon.

  10. I had reason to dismantle the wiper switch yesterday and (because I was being spoken to about something completely unrelated whilst I was doing it) I wasn't paying attention to the position of the 'V' shaped spring which popped out unseen.

It would be very much appreciated if someone could tell me which way round it goes and what recesses each end of the spring should go in (presumably between one of the contact posts).

In addition, on the subject of wipers, is there any scope for adjustment on the limit switch on the wiper motor?

I ask this because I have just fitted a Hella intermittent wiper switch but I'm only getting a half sweep in that they go from the park position to their maximum travel to the side of the screen but don't return again. Incidentally the Hella switch is a universal fit and the instructions are of no help.

    Thanks in advance.

    Jon.

  11. Thats great, thanks for that chaps.

The string method seems a really obvious way of doing it....now its been pointed out  . I didn't hold out much hope of finding anyone around these parts who would want to take on the job anyway, it was bad enough trying to find somewhere to get the wheels balanced.

    Jon.

  12. I really need to check the tracking on my 110.

Is it something I could do myself or am I better off getting it checked on a laser tracking rig, which I suspect is the better option. In which case will any garage offering a tracking check be able to do it. I suppose what I'm driving at here is can a tracking rig used for cars cope with a 110 on 265 tyres.

    Any wisdom gratefully recieved.

    Jon.

  13. I'm after a wiper delay relay for the rear wiper. Seen one on ebay for £14 but the interval is 40 seconds which seems a bit too long. Something around 20-25 seconds would be better, possibly. Any ideas where I might find one?

I'm also planning on ditching the original switch and replacing it with seperate switches for the wash and an off/on/on switch for the wipers, with the first 'on' for the intermittent circuit and the second 'on' for continuous operation.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Ta.

    Jon.

  14. Thanks Ralph, but I already have a Hella intermittent control unit with an adjustable interval of between 2 and 30 sweeps per minute.

My dad had it fitted to our old Maxi and when it was finally scrapped back in '89 the control unit was removed and has spent the intervening years in the loft. Miraculously the fitting instructions survived but since it's mid seventies vintage the vehicle list includes cars like Simcas, DAFs, NSUs and vehicles that are positive earth.

So now I've clearly established which wiring diagram to use its going to be very easy to fit, just a couple of bullet connectors and the switch matches the the current switchgear.....and since it didn't cost anything :D except the price of a new soldering iron

    Jon.

  15. Thanks for the info, most helpful.

Now I can wire in a nice intermittent wiper control unit, one of the things I've always wished I had, after 18 years of owning the vehicle. All I need to do now is buy myself a soldering iron.

I expect the coming winter will now be the driest ever recorded.

    Jon.

  16. Thanks for all your replies.

I've since found the correct dimensions for the bolts and checked my own bolts, which are adjusted in 10mm less than recommended and the tyres (G90's) are still more than 20mm away from the radius arms.

According to the list of dimensions I have, the bolts only protrude an extra 4mm for 265's when compared to 7.50's so, I imagine, that would equate to not much noticable difference.

Adam, what wheels/offset were you using with the 275's?

    Jon.
