  1. got the mounts in next question is are the radiator brackets that fit to the top of the raidiator different to thos that fit the 19j? colin
  2. Its a defender 200tdi but i dont think it will make any difference, i am going to get myself an offset ring spanner to to help get into the bolts as i cant get a socket into the space and my spanners are too wide. colin
  3. afternoon all, i am in the middle of a 200tdi engine into my 90 and i have it located and bolted to the gearbox but i cant get the drivers side engine mount to fit in as the bulkhead prevents me from hoisting it high enough. i have tried to get in to take of the metal engine mount but cant get a tool onto it, is there a special too anyone uses for removing the bolts? they appear to be on bloody tight! colin
  4. i am needing to replace my seat box in my 1986 90 and have found ones from later 300tdi and td5 models which are in mint condition, but they obviously have different openings for the tunnel. has anyone modified one to fit? colin
  5. It is a santana, that what we tow the crane with, but if it helps i do drive a 1986 90 which has gone ont he road for the first time last week after being released from Gaydon motor museum. the santana is a good peice of kit but very noisey, uncomfortable and the heating is worse than a land rovers, but it has oodles of power. thanks everyone
  6. Morning all, Not quite a landy but we did tow it behind one! I run a very small company in Aberdeenshire that rents out compact cranes and we had our Klaas Trailer crane stolen from us in Manchester over the weekend. The crane is a trailer unit that you require a landy or similar to tow with and is pretty large (3.49tonnes, 9m long, 2.1m wide and a shade taller than a santana roof)! it was taken from a site in Oldham and is a bit of a head turner. The crane had www.compact-crane.co.uk and 0845 8720878 written on the boom and flyjib and MacAndrew Milne on the rear. I have attached a picture or two of the crane and would most grateful if anyone who thinks they may have seen it could let me know. Thanks everyone Colin

My company is a very new start up and this was our only unit so were a bit stuck without it! Thanks everyone Colin
  8. i have been asked to uncover teh chassis number on the land rover i have just finished so i can get the registration back dated to when it was built. the chassis has a thick coating of paint, so to save me the time of stripping the paint of teh entire thing can anyone tell me where it should be on an 1986 90? thanks
  9. Fixed the problem, i ran a direct earth tot he negative ont he battery fromt he radio and all is working fine now. thanks for the advice colin
  10. only just got back from holiday so havent had a chance to have a look and will let you know. will try earthing directly from the bulkhead to the negative terminal on the battery. colin
  11. Morning everyone, can anyone tell me how to adjust the fuel to stop my 1986 TD from blowing black smoke anytime i touch the accelerator? i had the fuel pump replaced with a used one and i guess they had different set ups. thanks
  12. Got it fixed guys, i fitted a 74degrees thermostat and it sits at the correct temp now. Thanks for all the help. colin
  13. Evening all, i have got an electrical gremlin on my 90 which i have just rebuilt, the radio cuts out any time that i turn on the lights, press the brake peddal, put in th eindicators, etc... any ideas? i have tried wiring the radio directly to the battery but get the same fault. its an 1986 90 colin
  14. If it had a blocked radiator then would it not have overheated when i ran it without the thermostat fitted? i thought that the thermostat might be restricting the flow too much? colin
  15. Afternoon all, taking my 90 td rebuild out for a test drive in the forest and it keeps overheating, especially when im climbing up hill. checked the thermostat and it appears to work when i put it in a boiling pan, the engine wouldnt even heat up when i removed the thermostat and took it for a spin. any ideas? colin
  16. i am having an overheating issue with my 90 td 19j engine. we put the thermostats in a cup of hot water and they didnt open until at a very high temp, is this correct?
  17. Thanks D. It could well be an air lock, as teh fluid just isnt moving around the block! i guess the best way to sort out an air lock is to loosen off one of the pipes and see if any air escapes? failing that the block must be blocked. colin
  18. Morning everyone, i finaly got my land rover 90 MOT'd after its build. it was one of the rolling chassis that used to be in the Gaydon motor museum so i all nice and shiney. I had a lot of bother getting the engine running correctly as the previous owner hadnt kept the engine mothballed (no oil or anything in the block) and the head wasnt torqued, etc.. anyway i took it out for a test drive the other day in the forest an the engine keeps overheating straight away, has anyone got any suggestions? i have changed the thermostat valve, whats the best way to trace a fault like this? are water pumps prone to not working? its an 1986 TD colin
  19. Can anyone tell me how to remove a 300tdi engine without removing the gearbox? It doesnt look like i can get access to teh bellhousing bolts at the top. colin
  20. Thanks for the replies, i dont really know what i'm looking for. i suppose around £600-700.
  21. Morning everyone, i have a 1994 white 300tdi commercial discovery with 182,000 miles on the clock that i am need to get rid of, the problem is i dont know whether it will be more profitable to break it or to sell complete. good points: It has an MOT until Jan 2009 and tax until the same date and didnt require any work for its last MOT other than a new number plate as i had broken it.. I have fitted an Allisport intercooler, silicone hoses, new radiator, new tires, rear ladder, winch bumper and britpart winch, first 4 offroad roof bars, rear dickie seats, sony cd head unit, new alternator 3 months ago. the interior is in good shape and the vehicle still ahs the original load space guard fitted and has a rear door window guard. Starts on the first turn and doesnt smoke. the bad pints are: the boddy work is tatty, has a dent in rear passenger side wheel arch where i hit a deer, roof has rust spots from road chips, and various other scrapes and bumps. the heater switch is temperamental, engine temp sensor needs replacing, will require cambelt change in the near future as i havent done one, the rear door hinges need replacing. the central locking doesnt lock the rear door, i think its just the actualtor that need replacing as it makes all the correct noises but just doesnt operate. the rear door is also missing its door card. The discovery is located in Aberdeen.
  22. when i turned on the ignition and unplugged the plug (with 3 wires) and individual wire that connects to back, all the wires had power being supplied (although as mentioned before one of the brown wires in the plug only produced a faint glow), is this wrong? colin
  23. i finaly got some time tonight and tried connecting up a new alternator to the landy and the dash lights are sti not lighting up for the battery, etc when ignition is turned on. But i did check that power was getting to the alternator and it appears that the brown wire which has the small spade terminal in the plastic plug that goes into the back of the alternator only produces a dim light on the circuit tester where as the rest of the wires all make the tester glow bright! does anyone know where the feed for the brown wire with the small spade terminal comes from, is it the alternator? colin
  24. thanks, i have had a look at the alternator i am about to fit and it has a terminal with W next to it, so thanks for the help. Colin
