  1. Can a tachometer/rev counter be fitted to a 1986 TD 90? If so does anyone know where i can get one? Colin
  2. i think so as the wires match up with regards colors and obviously the males go into females, etc.. the bulb glows very bright for all the other wires in the conector that should be feeding power, i.e. brown, etc.. maybe i should try and find a cheap second hand alternator to see if its got a fault.
  3. Right i have finally had some spare time to get some more work done on the 90 i am building, so i have taken a look at the wiring issues i have at the movement. I have managed to get the fuel gauge working again by changing the wires round to black - white/grey - green, its strange how this has made it work as the gauge worked before i fitted the new engine harness, and i hadn't touched the wires? despite getting a reading from the fuel gauge i still am not getting any ignition lights for the battery, oil, etc.. I have checked the brown/yellow wire which plugs into the back of the alternator with the two larger brown wires and where the engine harness connects to the main loom my circuit tester only gets a gloomy glow from the bulb! I am assuming that the brown/yellow wire powers these lights and gauges? i have checked and there is power at the fuel cut off switch, power supply to alternator and the starter switch. Colin
  4. I bought a designa chassis about 5 years ago and the build quality was horrific, and to top it off they werent interested in listening to my complaints or sorting the problems out. I will never go near that company again from my personal experience. the welds missed the joints, holes werent aligned correctly and the fuel tank came rusty inside and out! Colin
  5. I recieved the following information on wiring form autosparks and thought it could be of use when trying to find out which wire means what. colin
  6. From memory all you would need to remove is the exhaust down pipe, exhaust heat shield (if you have one) and remove the wires. This should provide enough access to get a socket in to undo the bolts (of which there are 3), the unit should then slide out and you can fit the new one. You shouldnt need to remove the turbo hope this helps Colin
  7. I am hoping to put my 90 project in for an MOT, does anyone have a copy of the MOT checklist that you get from the garage when you fail your MOT? it would be a great help so i can through the car and c heck it is okay before taking it along. Colin
  8. I have fitted electric windows to my 90, i understand that to use normal rocker switches i need to wire up a relay to operate. Does anyone know if the switches found in cars have teh relay built in, i.e. so i dont have to have a pile of wiring behind the dash? or do car window switches still require an external relay? Colin
  9. I am still having the same fault with the harness (well im assuming its the harness!). Before i changed the old one out i was getting battery light flickering and an oil light before starting, but since i have fittted the new engine harness i am not getting any readings and the fuel gauge has stopped working, instead the fuel light is constantly on? The car does run though! So there is power getting to the starter solonoid and fuel switch but there wasnt any power going to any of the sensors (but i am not sure if there should be)? htere were two brown wires that connected tot eh starter motor does one feed the dash and the other feed the starter, fuel cut off, etc..? or does it sound like a fault with the altenator? Any help greatly received Colin
  10. i have bought a set of second hand military bench seats for my 90 but when i sit them in the back the mounts appear too low, are there some mounting blocks that i require to fit these seats? i cant imagine that the rear tub on a military 90 would be any different? any help greatly appreciated
  11. i bought a new engine harness for my 1896 TD 90, i have fitted it but now none of the ignition lights come on when the ignition is turned on! there is one wire that i cant find a home for its blue and green and sits towards the front passenger side of the engine? the engine runs so there is power going to the fuel cut of, etc.. has anyone any ideas what could be causing this fault? could the plug on the back of the alternator be set up incorrectly? any help greatly appreciated colin
  12. Have you tried Ebay? there are normally loads on there failing that try the likes of the land rover center. Colin
  13. Can anyone tell me what size bolts i require for my land rover 90 TD steering cowl? colin
  14. The door appears to be sealing fine all round the door apart from the top rail, its a lot worse towards the back end of the door. I have tried adjusting the striker but the door is pretty much as tight in as it will go. it must be just another example of carp manufacturing as the passenger door fits perfectly. I will give bending the door another go and try adjusting the hinges, etc, just a little concerned that i may overdo it and ruin the door, but i suppose there isnt a great deal i can do about it. Thanks for all the suggestions Colin
  15. I bought some new front doors for my 90, i got them sprayed and preped. Then when it came to fit them the passenger door fits perfectly but the drivers door top half doesnt appear to bend into the car enough and as such there is a gap of a cm or so at teh top! Has anyone else had this problem? i have tried bending the door top inwards but theyre stronger than expected! Colin
  16. thanks for the replies, you have hit the nail on the head, it is an extreemly tight fit moving the seats in to the inner nuts as the centre seat is in the way! So if the later middle seats are narrower does that mean that they wont fit my earlier seatbox or have they got he same mounts? Colin
  17. I have a set of front seats to fit to the front of my 90 but the runners only have the one bolt hole for mounting whereas my seatbox is for the older 2 bolt mounts. Can you buy just the runners or do you have to buy a complete frame? Alternatively if anyone has any old seats they would be willing to unbolt the runners from i would be willing to buy them or swap with my single bolt types? Colin
  18. I have got some front seats with single bolt mounts for my 90 but my seatbox takes the double bolt mount type, can i buy replacement slider bars with the double bolt mounts? Thanks Colin
  19. I have a fault with my rear drivers side indicator, it works fine when i put the hazards on but it doesn't work when i signal right? Is this an earthing problem? Colin
  20. Not sure to be honest i cant remember where it was i found out, could well have been the DVLA when i called up about my trailer license or it could have been pub talk. What i understood was that after the 1997 change date you required a mini bus license to drive vehicles with 12 seats in, i may be wrong and would be more than happy if i was found wrong. I got rid of the lovely 110 V8 (mmmmmmmmm) but never say never when it comes to landys and i may be persuaded for another when i have finished my 90!!! But then i have always fancied a 130, i drove one once and got to say i have developed a desire for one some day! Colin
  21. I have done the trailer test and its not particulary difficult, the hardest part is the ridiculous reversing maneuver they ask you to do in restricted space. As long as you are half decent at reversing a trailer you'll be fine. I didn't find out about the test until i had been towing a transporter with a landy on the back for a couple fo years, and to add to the problems i found out that i am technically supposed to have a minibus license to drive the 110 as they changed that part of the license too in 1997! Colin
  22. It was indeed the rolling chassis that was for sale last year, ive had my problems with it but im finally nearing completion! Got virtually all the electrics sorted now and have had to change and fix what has seemed an endless list of mechanical problems with the engine (timing was out, injection pump needed changing, injectors required complete overhaul, changed headgasket, and had to fix other minor problems all of which were caused by the usual lack of land rover build quality and the vehicle sitting around for 20years)! Its running now but is still slightly smokey but i have never had a 19J TD that didnt smoke, plus it may bed in after its got some miles under its belt. i will post some more pics this weekend if i remember.
  23. excellent, well i havent fitted one of the boxes so i will just tape it up as you suggest as the lights are working fine! Thanks for the help Colin
  24. Can anyone tell me what this connector is for? I have fitted a new loom from autosparks to the 90 i am building and dont know what this connector is for. its located at the bottom right of the dashboard behind the hazards switch. My second question is regarding the rear door heated screen, i dont appear to have a connector block that fits the switch at the bottom right of the dash, is this a part that i can buy of the shelf and plug into the loom? the 90 is a 1986 TD which has a brand new chassis and rolling gear which was in a motor museum since construction in 1986, i have attached a couple of pics if anyone is interested. Thanks Colin
