  1. You need a casing spreader to get a Salisbury diff out, and depending on what ratio you are changing from and to then you might also need a new diff center.
i took mine out yesterday to punch out broken shaft i didnt use a spreader just light preasure with a pry bar ,on refitting i used the journal bolts to pull it back in. i fitted a detroit locker a year ago using the same method to shim the backlash i think the old engineers [im 60] tend to complicate things go for it. the only problem is to alter the backn lash you have the pull the bearings off which is another story and learning curve.
  2. You may notice that some dealers put a sticker on the speedo - stating that the recorded mileage may be wrong. There's a legal requirement for this - something about it being clearly visible when the speedo is viewed. You can alter or replace the speedo, and there's nothing illegal about it, but if you sell the vehicle - I think you are required to state that this has happened. If you don't, then as far as the law is concerned, the vehicle has been 'clocked' and an offence has been commited. I suggest you get L/R to access the ECU, I don't think there's any better proof of the vehicle being clocked. I think you can also contact previous owners.

    Les.

the clever boys alter the imfo on the ecu as well its common pratice in the dodgy end of the motor trade, it also happens at the top end there is a hire co in london that hires out top marque cars[ferraris e.t c.] and they spike them beore there sold ive seen it done.
  3. First, you must use a TIG welder as the metals are different. Do not weld on the inside of the drive member as this will cause breakage. I have had welded half shafts on my 110 for years and so have many others here in SA. One company made a special jig that rotated at the correct speed to get a good weld. Autobox in Pretoria IIRC. I bought mine from Cliff Barker who used to race a 110 pickup with a BMW M3 engine and welded up centre diff and half shafts. He also ran a Detroit locker in the back, so the shafts got a bit of a pounding. He had FWH on the front for road use.

mines much the same detroit locker 4.5 je engine that has twisted shafts in the past but it says alot for salisbury that although they look like a cork screw[slight exageration] thy havent broken yet .inspecting the shafts has become as routine as dipping the oil ,its the flanges that give me the problem.

  4. i was in libya in the late 60s when a certain col gaddafi had a a revolution and deposed king idris, we left loads of kit there mostly disabled ie run with no oil until it went bang. i was "stuck" for 3 months until we eventualy got out to cyprus .i wouldnt mind betting some of the motors are what we left behind.

  5. First, will a TD5 fit defender (don't mind a few little mods as I'm making my own tunnel) and mechanics fit new bits to newish cars and when confronted with a bit that dosen't quite fit then they send it back, whereas a spanner monkey will modify the part and it will ft and work perfectly... :P ... :D

i think you might be refering to fitters rather than mechanics we dont want to start ww3 here

  6. it is adjustable but its not easy most of the time you have to move the crown wheel a little closer to the pinion using shims .the only problemis pulling the bearings off [after you got the diff out of the housimg using a spreader] puttig the bearings back on and checking backlash again if not right start again.research it and do it you will be proud of yourself good luck

  7. Low ratio or low ratio difflock?

If it only drives in difflock then I would suspect a CV joint from the description but then it should drive in high range difflock too...

    i second that
