  1. Had a similar problem twice. First was the turbo packing up and the second was the lift pump going.
  2. I use the 90 a lot at work for towing livestock, hay etc. The brakes are down right shabby, I replaced the mc not that long ago which improved things but they're still not to good. The axles have been bastardised many times and the whole truck is made of bits of this and bits of that which doesn't help. I've just acquired some fresh axles off a 300 disco to go under it for a fresh start and was wondering about the 110 calipers to give the brakes some extra oomph, the 110 at work stops very nicely! Seems it may not be worth it though. Am I right though that the calipers will fit and that once they're fitted you use front discs on the rear?
  3. Hi guys, Can anyone tell me if a set of 110 rear calipers will fit my 90? It's got an axle off a 300 tdi disc on it. If they don't fit what needs modding to make it work? Also from my understanding once they're on I then use 90 front discs on the rear, is this correct? Cheers, Joe
  4. So, today the fuel gauge is doing a merry dance back and forth from full to just under half! I've done 20 miles off a full tank. I don't recall it going clappers like that before but then I've paid it no real attention due to its miscreant behaviour. Is this a sign of an earth problem? If so it it the gauge, the sender or something else?!
  5. I've also made up a temporary new earth with a good connection and hooked that up, won't know if that works until it goes below half a tank though!!
  6. Western, if the gauge shorts to Earth on the back what happens? No reading, always full?
  7. Right, I tried your suggestion Tanuki and the sender wire(green with black trace) sent to a good earth gives a full tank. Black is obviously the earth and doesn't move the needle when sent to a good earth. And white is the fuel warning light. Out of interest with the sender out of the tank I connected up the wires and moved the float up and Down and it moves the need as it should, fuel warning light also comes on as well. Contact strips look ok, maybe we're a little dirty so cleaned them up, could possibly be a bit worn to but ultimately really didn't look bad at all. Also checked again that the float wasn't touching anything and it seeks that there I plenty of free space around the float bulb, though it does seem sat though it might be getting stuck. Any thoughts?!
  8. Cheers chaps, off for a look now. I know it's definitely not getting caught on any baffles, that was my first port of call!
  9. Thanks for that Tanuki, I'll try it tomorrow and see how it goes.
  10. Hi guys. I've been having an issue with my fuel gauge, for the past year or so! If you fill it up it reads full and as you use the diesel it works to exactly half full and then doesn't read any lower. It does sometimes waver about around the full mark when you first full it up then it settles down. It worked properly up until I had to change the tank and hasn't worked since. I thought initially the float was binding causing the issue but made sure it doesn't touch anywhere so that's not it. When it's below half a tank, if you remove the sender from the tank and then reinstall it it reads correctly for the remainder of that tank. Done a search but didn't turn up an answer. It's a 1984 90 that's had a 200tdi disco conversion if that makes a difference. I don't want to shell out on a new sender until its confirmed that's the cause of the problem! Any advice gratefully received. Joe.
  11. Thanks for that guys! i searched for them loads but didnt turn them up, bad looking i duess. Thanks for the tip David, thats very helpful. Atb, Joe
  12. Hi neil. That is the part number I found but doing a search for that number turned up nothing! I thought that number was for the ones on the floor.
  13. Hi guys, Any one know the part number for the tread plates that go in the bed of a 90? (Or 110?) Been looking but had no joy. Only manage to turn up chequer plate which is not what I'm after. Or has anyone got some theyre happy to sell? Cheers, Joe
  14. Thanks Western, I'll check them as well. i just cant see why it only does it sometimes and not all the time!
  15. i did suspect that fuel could be leaking back down the fuel line, but would it not do it all the time if this where the case? i'll double check the fuel filter when i next go to the truck, it was replaced fairly recently so shouldn't really need replacing and i'm pretty sure its tight! you never know though. could air be getting in there any other way?
  16. Hi Chaps, every now and then when i start my 90 it fires up fine, and then after a few seconds starts to run really rough with lots of white smoke and then stall. if i keep my foot on the throttle a bit it stutters and tries to stall but eventually the revs pick up and its fine! if you let it stall out it starts and runs fine on the next turn of the key! it doesn't seem to matter if the weather has been hot or cold and like i say it only does it occasionally not all the time. its an early 90 with a 200tdi disco engine. its done it ever since ive owned it. in which time its had all the belts and filters changed and pretty much the whole engine rebuilt! any ideas? ive not been able to fathom it myself. cheers in advance, Joe
  17. Thanks guys, Looks like im gonna have to get an after market gauge and sender ans i do not know what model the gauge that i have is! Its never been fitted but has no part number. Anyone got any experience with Durite temperature gauges? i have one of their volt meters so might well consider go with a matching temp gauge.
  18. Hi guys, I have a 1984 defender with a Disco 200Tdi conversion. Its currently fitted with some gaudy digital, bright red, blingy LCD after market affair that id like to get rid of and fit a standard defender gauge that i have. The current gauge has its own sender and wiring that don't work with the standard gauge, so i need to buy the correct sender..... But which one? Just had a thought as i type this, I piked up said gauge at the Peter borough show and the sticker that had the part number on is gone. are all Defender temp gauges the same? Any advice greatly received. Joe
  19. hi guys, i have a 1987 LR90 that has had a 200tdi engine and box out of a disco fitted to it while owned by someone else. among its many joys its are a bit of a grind on changing into 2nd or 3rd, going up or down. its bad when its cold but lessens when the engine temp reaches 40 degrees( i have a digital gauge). I know it means the syncro's worn, any way to sort this? if it means a replacement box, could i upgrade and fit an r380 out of a disco? being as both the box and engine were from a disco originally. or is it likely that the bell housing will have been altered to make it fit? or maybe an r380 out of a latter defender? i know ordinarily a shorter bell housing is required to fit the r380 in place of the LT77. cheers, Joe
  20. Hi guys, 2 out of the 3 caps were original landrover and the 3rd was a cheapy. I'll check the breather tomorrow.... hopefully!! i work from pretty much sun up until after dark! How do i find out if its a worn shaft/flange causing the problem? Fridgefrezzer... I belleive its the slip joint as there is play there, but then again im new to this so i may be wrong. also thanks for the pointer but isnt that prop to small for my needs? its apparently 637mm and mine measured 670mm, or am i missing something?
  21. hi guys, thanks for all the response's! sorted the smoking issue..... was definitely the fuel pump! Front prop is knackered... measured 670mm in-situe, does this sound right for a 200tdi defender? i dont really have the money for a new wide angle prop right no, will i be ok to use a decentish standard 1 for a while? its not really getting off roaded.... just tracks and stuff on the farm. its has now developed a strange issue that someone might be able to shed some light on. it keeps popping the cap off the off-side rear drive flange, ive gone through 3 in as many days! it now looks like the oil has leaked out of the axle? it seems as tho the half shaft is sticking out further than it should, is this a sign of somthing? is there something i need to inspect? thanks again, joe
  22. hi guys, im based in sevenoaks. i'll get under there armed with a tape measure tomorrow morning! there was no mention of the transfer box being change so would guess its all defender. Ive got someone looking at the fuel pump saturday morning so hopefully that'll be that issue solved. thanks again, joe
  23. many thanks for the response. Unfortunately its my only vehicle so i have to drive it, and it has a 2" suspension lift. does this mean that i need to use a wise angle prop? With your advice i can now sort these bits asap! joe
  24. Hi guys, new to the forum, and land rovers. And i love it! wouldnt be with out one now! I recently bought a 1987 LR90 that's been fitted with a disco 200 tdi engine and rear axle, i also believe the gear box is from a disco as well, its an LT77 if that helps. Its not bad but there are a few issues id like to sort out, these being; 1. i think the front prop is knakered, it was knocking up and down a bit( if that makes sense) ive pumped it full of grease and after 20 miles theres no grease in it and its knocking again. would this be a disco or defender front prop given that its had an engine swap? it looks like it could be a wide angle but im not sure. same goes for the back, would it be disco or defender? thoi it seems fine so it isnt a major concern currently. 2. it smokes, and i mean quite a lot!! mostly fine in normal driving tho. black smoke under heavy acceleration or when its in a high gear at low revs or when its struggling. it looks like the fuel pump has been "tuned" as i can see tool marks were spanners and screw drivers have been used. is there anything else thats likely to be causing it to smoke this way and in these circumstances? using google it seems that black smoke is mainly unburnt diesel. 3. its been fitted with a kenlowe fan on an adjustable thermostat. in the 2 weeks ive owned it the temp has never gone above 66 Deg (it has a digital temp gauge) and its been up some long steep hills and done a 50 mile stint on the motorway at 65mph. i discovered yesterday that the fan hasnt been working as its fuse was blown. so i changed the fuse and the fan came on, according to the gauge water temp was 25 Deg!! surely that cant be right! the tricky thing is that the thermostat dial has numbers on it (40-110 Deg) but theres no marker to reference them to.... any ideas? is it possible the thermostat in the engine is pooped? there was more but it escapes me after typing all the above!! thanks in advance, Joe
