  1. Hi guys

I was wandering if anyone has a step by step guide to swapping transfer boxes in a series 3?

Everything is out of the car as it’s currently being rebuilt.

I have a good gearbox attached to a broken transfer box and a good transfer box attached to a broken gearbox, however after looking online simply swapping them about looks more complicated than with an lt230 so any guidance is greatly appreciated!

  2. I’m currently building the tiki g chassis for my 88” but can’t find half the parts or remember where things went 😂

does anyone have pictures of how the front shocks attach at the axle end?

Ive looked at various photos and some mount to the axle and some mount to the shackle plates for the u-bolts.

What would be correct for a 1980 88”?

  3. Hi guys

    I’m currently rebuilding a 1979/80 88” but it’s 2 years since I stripped it down 😂

I’ve misplaced 2 of the spring plates but I’m not sure which ones I have, does anyone know of a good source for the other 2 plates and also a diagram showing where each one fits?

  4. I haven't looked into it but I'd imagine the torque curve will be different?

Ie the 1.8 has its torque much higher in the rev range so not much use for low speed crawling/towing etc?

As above id look at just slotting a tdi in or if you're determined to be different and have an interesting project then I'd look towards a merc om606/5.

More expensive but much better power and torque.

Or on the other hand, it's your money, your Landrover and your time, I'd be interested to see how it goes just to see if it can be done and what obstacles and you overcome them.

    All the best

  5. Hi

I'm running an ex 19j 90 with a full discovery 300tdu conversion with the engine and gearbox in the factory 300tdi defender position.

I have also fitted a 300tdi defender temp sender.

The problem is that the temp gauge sits at the very top of the white, however with no thermostat in it sits below 1/3 on the white.

I tried a new thermostat, no difference.

Ive just replaced the water pump, viscous fan and a new thermostat but the gauge is still reading very high.

I bought a thermometer today and took several readings.

With the gauge at the very top of the white the header tank is between 76-80c when driving. When I got home I pulled the thermostat housing top plug out and took a reading with everything still hot and it was 82.4c.

The thermostat is set to 88c IIRC

so in my mind the engine must be fine and the fault is in the gauge?

    Any input is appreciated.

  6. Chris, I mean your first option, walk for a few hours, pitch a tent then walk back to the car.

Looking for maybe a 5 mile walk each way.

I'm a seasoned camper but all my experience is in the Cairngorms and Angus glens where I used to work, now I'm back home in Durham I'm stuck for ideas haha

  7. Hi guys

Just wandering if anyone has any suggestions of places to go camping in the north of England? Ideally within a 3 hour drive of Durham as this is a short notice weekend thing for me and my partner, we're not looking to go extreme but just spend a day walking and put up a tent away from loads of other people.

I was thinking the lakes but didn't have any specific locations in mind if anyone can help?

  8. Hi guys

Git my 90 back yesterday after being converted to 300tdi and r380.

The garage has done an amazing job of what they have done, everything is factory 300 spec for ease of spares and I know it's better than what u could've done.

The problem is they've cut corners towards the end due to running out of time.

I left the 90 with them in the middle of March and asked if it could be back by the 1st of June which they said was no problem, driving past every day I could see it hadn't moved, I kept calling in and reminding them of the deadline but always got told it'll be next week, eventually I gave him £500 to start it asap as time was running out, the car still hasn't moved by the 1st of June so I gave an ultimatum, it goes in or I take it away.

Long story short the new deadline was the 1st July but I didn't get the car back till the 15th because it didn't even get into the garage till the 1st of July.

Now that I'm desperate for the 90 as my disco insurance runs out tonight I've found a list of problems.

    1. Gearbox they supplied crunches in 2nd and 4th

    2. Transfer box I supplied isn't the one that's fitted

    3. He didn't fit an air filter (ran out of time because he left it so late) and drove 15 miles to the not station

    4. Various scratches to the front end paint work (brand new paint about 18 months ago)

    5. R380 I supplied to be fixed is missing from my box of parts

    6. Smashed reversing lights

    7. Blanking plates missing from timing case

    Plus other small minor details

Like I said. The actual fitting is really good, but because he left it so late and I need the car now he had to rush it through

Would you guys say I'm entitled to complain about the state of affairs?

    Thanks

    Jamie
